Who do you think makes the finest Manga? My vote goes to Yukito Kishiro, because Battle Angel Alita and Aqua Knight were emotionally moving, graphically stunning, and the stories themselves contained an amazing amount of detail.
Kentarou Miura and Tsutomu Nihei.
Naoki Urasawa and Maokoto Yukimura
Hitoshi Ashinano. Unfortunately he hasn't done enough for me to say that all of his work is consistently superb but YKK is a masterpiece. I'd say the same thing about Nausicaa and Miyazaki.
Very hard to say, with so much manga genres. The newest fad seems to be Yukimura Makoto for Vinland Saga. But he also did Planetes, so he's definitely pretty good.
Stan Lee + Hiroyuki Takei = ??
Yukito Kishiro, Takehiko Inoue. Pick any page from Battle Angel or Vagabond and frame it. It could happen.
Surprising Miura hasn't been mentioned here more than once. Sure he's taking fucking forever but Berserk is seriously a hell of a masterpiece. At least the series hasn't gone to hell like WoT did for Robert Jordan.
Wow that was a terrible pun, and it wasn't even intended.... I'll also give a nod to Kishiro for Alita.
definatly going to have to agree with you there for alita
I am bumping this because god damnit, I just bought Battle Angel Alita 1-9, reading Vol. 3 and it is one of my all time favorites already. I can't fucking wait to see what Tiphares is like.
Great thing about Alita is that it keeps its quality right up the end. Throughout the entire manga you really feel for the characters, and especially Alita.
Well, she IS the lead character...
Last Order is a bit on the meh side
Meh. I'd say Junji Ito is my favorite, I'm sure there is probably someone better out there but all around I haven't found someone that I like as much. He first got me interested in manga, and I haven't exactly been too impressed with many other horror manga authors. Sure Hino is nice once in awhile but at points it just feels a little too over-the-top in its attempt to be either "ohhhh ~spooky~" or in its attempt to try to be gory, and in cases it just makes you chuckle such as when a girls head gets cut off and cigarettes start spurting out.
Adachi. Urusawa is the only one who comes close.
goddamn OSAMU TEZUKA.
motherfucker covered every single genre of... thing imaginable, AFTER INVENTING MANGA AS IT IS CURRENTLY KNOWN.
he's done horror, historical epics, sci-fi, a goddamn decade-spanning biography of buddha, kids' funny animal cartoons, EVERYTHING.
i mean sure, a lot of his stuff is kinda out there and nuts, but there's a warmth and skill to even his most outlandish creations that grabs me more than just about any other manga-ka i can think of.
Miwa Shirow - Dogs Bullets and Carnage
but his works look american
Do you even know what that is?
Junji is probably the best horror manga guy. I haven't read anything that tops him.
because he looked at betty boop and mickey mouse and said "hey, those are cute big eyes. I should use them someday."
And after that amerikkka copied him.
I approve of this post
Personal opinions can't be wrong, dick face.
yes, they can!
for example, i can have the "opinion" that you aren't retarded. that "opinion" would be "incorrect" and therefore "wrong."
in summation: INTERNET
he made a manga about adolf hitler. how can somebody not love him after that?
Ken Akamatsu purely for Love Hina
Mitsuru Adachi (although seen one adachi seen em all)
being retarded is falsifiable (clinically), therefore making it not an issue of opinions, but an issue of facts.
anyway, to expand a bit on my point: tezuka for all his faults was far braver and more adventurous than any other big name manga artist currently working. outside of manga, he directed a ton of epic and strange anime features and shorts, and even in his later manga when he really sat down and focused, his stories could be immensely moving and fascinating. urusawa is great, i'll admit, and probably my favorite artist currently working, but tezuka will always be my number one choice.
rumiko takahashi clocks in 3rd for me.
Junji Ito is one of the best manga authors I know of when it comes to portraying atmosphere. a lot of horror manga don't seem creepy at all.
Guy who did Monster/20th Century Boys/etc
Guys who did Berserk and Blade of the Immortal are also a worthy mention.
I really like Nihei, he has terrific atmosphere and art, but his works just aren't very emotive. >>10057998
Sorry, I don't really memorize mangaka names.
Underrated talent. I really like his character designs.
Alita was good. I should read aqua knight soon.
>>10058644but his works just aren't very emotive
True. Its sometimes hard to tell what his characters are thinking, feeling, etc.
Though it kinda goes well with the whole 'synthetic life forms from a distant future' thing he has going.
of all time? tezuka
currently alive? urasawa
Naoki fucking Urasawa
Masashi Kishimoto is pretty good imo. He has absolutelyh terrific artstyle and he portrays the emotion so well.. some of the greatest character design in the hirstory of mangas
obvious troll is obvious.
i left out mohiro kitoh on this post. #2 after urasawa
