Well /a/, I finally read the manga. Marathoned it in two days. It was a very nice ride, could've used a bit more Nina and less Eva though.
Should I go watch the show now? 70+ episodes, but I wouldn't mind watching qt Nina and Grimmer and Johanna in action. What did /a/ think of the show?
Otherwise, I'd love some Monster discussion.
It's a straight adaption. If you feel like re-reading someday, watch it instead; I liked it, but reading/watching it twice in a row is a bit much.
Is Fortner even a normal German family name?
I could swear it's Förtner or Foertner.
ITT: Overrated shit.
How is the voice acting and dialogue scenes? I know it's a pretty old show, 2005 I think, and I wouldn't care if the animation's meh.
You should have watched anime adaption. It's exactly the same. Anime is better though.
>could've used a bit more Nina and less Eva
Good taste, Nina is my waifu.
How shit can your taste be? Do you ever think about suiciding?
All pretty superb. Johan, Roberto and Runge (or was it Lunge, I forget, and I think my subs switched half way) were the ones I personally remember as standing out as great.
What really to explain? Anime adds great atmosphere with its bgm and realistic art style. And voice acting was good too.
I'm not weak to think about suicide you piece of shit.
Sweet. I think I'll take my time before starting it like >>100553925 said, but that's good to know.
>your opinions make me angry.jpg
The anime suffers from horrific direction. Shots linger, replacing tension with facepalming stupidity. There's no reason to watch it. In fact it's bad.
Stop telling lies and go away to overrated threads.
Runge sounds more like an actual German name.
Lunge is the German word for lung.
>Shots linger, replacing tension with face palming stupidity
Lunge is a butthead who lost everything.
In the manga the fire is tense.
In the anime, it goes for like three episodes and Nina misses Johan point blank. This is supposed to be a firestorm of activity and the anime slows it down to a snails pace to the point it insults their characters intelligence.
Monster is beyond a doubt the worst adaptation I've ever seen lauded as good.
What is one fucking panel in the manga should not be two minutes on the screen.
Wasnt HBO supposed to be making this a TV show while working closely with the guy who did the manga?
>hbo monster tv show
Del Toro was supposedly signed to do it.
News has been pretty quiet since the announcement last year.
There was a sticky on /a/.
Oh well, looks like HBO flaked.
Got any caps or archive link?
Are there any other scans for the manga? Or am I just gonna have to stick with relatively poor scans for the first few volumes
Someone bug him on his Twitter about it.
what scans are you reading now?
The thing with Urasawa is his shit starts off really great and holds strong until the middle.
Then it goes downhill. Sometimes a little, sometimes a lot.
You sure you're not looking at scans from a shit site? The scans I read were good, though a bit small.
It would be nice to see a male Asian main character in an American series who isn't comedic or a martial artist.
The HBO series will make Nina the main because chinks.
It would be nice to see a live action adaptation of a manga that isn't embarrassingly bad.
The amount of characters the story utilizes in great detail is absolutely insane.
HBO likes to take it slow they had ASOIAF on the back burner for years. In fact they did a recast halfway through years into the project.
Urasawa is great at that, but the main plot wears thin after a while IMO. The series really should have ended in Munich.
That was one my my favorite parts. At first I thought that a section of the show was filler, but then every part of that came back into the main plot. Really impressed me.
How is Urasawa's other work? I really liked Monster but that's all I've read by him.
Pluto and 20th Century Boys are just as good.
> iz also released the Monster television anime series, and the anime ran on the television channel Syfy in the United States from 2009 to 2010.
They used to have an anime block. It was pretty good.
I would but I cant justify 16-20 dollars a volume
I feel robbed that I never knew about this..
So it was dubbed too?
It is steep, yeah. If you do end up wanting to own it later though for the record it's a lot cheaper on sites like ebay once you sift through the scalpers.
>100$ for vol 6
yes and as a german i prefer the english dub because it doesn't sound so ankward when they try to say the name of a city.Sadly there is no German dub
I could have sworn there was.
Yes dubbed. They had Laggan, GITS, Read or Die, Now and Then. A few others I forgot probably. It didn't last long though as Adult Swim put it up against Futurama in the same time slot.
That is a pretty awesome lineup
FUCK. But you know, Del Toro might adapt this a lot better than most of the other directors out there.
It's an omnibus edition, anon. It's like three volumes in one.
Thats a lot better, thanks for the heads up.
I feel like I didn't "get" the moral of this story. So why didn't Tenma finish off Johan? Why did he save his life for a second time? Won't Johan go and make more trouble after escaping? Or did something change in that massacre town?
How fucking young are you?
>Implying they won't change all the characters and the setting to merica.
You have more faith in television studio execs than me anon.
Hey buddy, it's 9 years ago. I'd say it's old enough compared to most of the shows being discussed on this board.
The answer is always Monsters cannot be killed
Fucking finally. Perfect edition is already available in just about every language other than English.
Two volumes. And it includes color pages, various extras, new cover art..
How the covers look put together
I remember reading through this in a couple of days myself, way back in autumn 2004... Watched the anime not too long thereafter.
It's definitely worth a watch.
Sweet. Fucking Eva though.
What do you mean?
(Just to be clear, >>100565757 is Anna/Nina. I don't know what happened either, she looks fine in other updated color pictures.)
There were rumours going around about a Hollywood (?) adaption of this years ago. Nothing came of it, though.
Case in point
Pluto is my favourite.
Pluto is great.
Ah, that's much better. That's my beautiful Nina.
Human life has equal value, basically.
Johan tried to corrupt Tenma and turn him into a monster but his inner goodness prevailed. You can interpret the ending as Johan escaping, but it's just as likely that the experience changed him on some level or that he committed suicide as some people speculate. The empty bed just means that the story is over.
I'm sorry but what happens with Eva at the end again?
I wish she had drunk herself to death.
I … see. Thanks, I feel I understand now.
She became an interior designer and straightened out. And stopped drinking, I think.
Damn what a coincidence reading this shit right now, at chapter 96 atm seems i should have watched the anime ooh well. i like reading better doesn't consume as much time.
I should get around to re-reading/watching this sometime soon. It was one of the first more "serious" manga I got into (after starting mostly with shounen and ecchi shit).
She had some excellent development and is one of the best characters in the story.
She didn't deserve that end, and actually grew into being a decent person.
After all the shit she pulled I can't say I agree. People "redeem" themselves like that all the time, but deep down they're usually still bitches in the end. At least I can't trust them to have actually changed.
I liked the development, but would've preferred some more fleshing out of other (minor) characters. Some of them only appeared once, like the Vietnamese girl doctor.
I also feel that, despite Johan being the crux of the whole series, we didn't see as much of him as we could have. I dunno, maybe some shots of his silhouette moving into a city or something.
I was going to buy the manga years ago but it's hard to justify spending $20-25 on one volume when you finish reading them in half an hour or so.
>not relieving the gritty suspense and dawning horror of those best moments over and over again
>implying I can't do that by reading it in CDisplay
Reading manga on a computer screen isn't the same.
