Before I start, I'd like to actually point out what makes this community "Good" or at the very least "Unique." Between /a/, and other anime related discussion forums, you'd notice little to know difference aside from layout and posting format. The rules are the same; no NSFW content, no inflammatory remarks, keep content on-topic, etc. The thing that makes us special would be the elitism brought on by the fact that you can post anonymously. Yes, it's also extremely immature, and as a result, people latch on to average shows because they're accepted by the community. It does keep this place relatively free from terrible anime, however. Our sheer intolerance for Naruto or related series' is what keeps /a/ different from other places. We are prone to group-think, and group-think has done us well: Which leads me to my next point

Keeping the status quo.

Status quo: "The way things are", or "The current state of affairs". This is the underlying fabric of what keeps our community together. Because of the anonymous environment, the status quo is actually vulnerable. Global opinion can be changed rather easily with the illusion of many people believing it, which creates the problem of trolling.
>>
I'm sure we all know what a troll is, we experience it every day. A troll is a person who is deliberately disturbing the order of things to "Fish" for emotional responses from people on the internet. When speaking about /a/, this is very dangerous because that order is what keeps us the community we are.

You might say "Don't respond to trolls" as a means to prevent them from doing it, but that won't work. /a/ gets new posters every day, whether you like it or not. These posters need to adapt to the way things are; the natural order. Ignoring trolls would allow trolls to dominate the popular opinion through anonymous posting. Old members would know better, but new users will not. With new users constantly coming in, they will adapt to this "Popular opinion" and the problem will grow worse.

From this, I don't think I need to do much to convince you that responding to trolls is absolutely necessary. You need to fight trolls to protect new people from adopting their mindset. You need to counter post to show that the majority of the people do not think that way. You need to contribute to an eventual 250+ post shitstorm just so the very fabric of our community isn't ripped apart by people who do not value it. It should be extremely clear to everyone just what trolling does. Trolling causes a mandatory 250+ argument over nothing.

Trolling needs to stop. Thank you in advance for making /a/ a better place.

My anus produced a wretched gas.

Ancient, silent and invisible, it blew from a gaping crevasse, fouling the entire house, as if an ancient curse had blown in through a door left ajar, a spirit possessed of malevolence, inspiring fear and panic amongst every inhabitant of my dear abode, even the dead baby pig that had become trapped underneath the furnace. Squealing, the corpse flew from my house, leaving a trail of guts and offal. Even that smell was enveloped and eaten by what I'd let escape from my body.

Yet, I sat still, with a strange smile on my face. Pleased, bemused, aroused, I do not know.

Maybe I felt all of these things.

He's just an idealistic self-educated idiot with a messianic complex and a need for recognition.

To tell the truth, I'd very much like to take the time to show you why you're wrong, but in that case it could easily be pointed out that I was trolled and you could stay coy. I'll just do the proper thing and not waste the energy. People that know better will continue as-is, and the same newcomers you ostensibly seek to protect will fall under the impression that they are entitled to kind, fair treatment for the sole reason that they like the same anime some others do.
>>
>>10053688
I find boards for the particular animes I like and go to them. For example, scanlation and fansub groups have boards.
There's always fansites, unless it's a brand new show, but if there's a fansub or scanlation group there will ALWAYS be a form for the fans where you can discuss it.
I go to a hellsing fansub group to talk about hellsing. I go to a berserk scanlation group to talk about berserk.

It's really that simple.

Start from the beginning, not the end. You failed at logic earlier today and you're also doing it now.

To start, you'll need a better definition of trolling -- others, and you, to some degree, identify it as anything that is contrary to some belief they think has been justified. Defining trolling as anything that induces an emotional response or seems agressive and then attempting to stamp it out detooths the 'elitist' mentality.

A "good" troll can be true, as most of the best ones are. A blatant falsehood stated in an apparently well-thought out manner, i.e. this thread, is also an effective troll. Some other imageboards use an ID hash based on IP, but still 'suffer' from trolling since there is always a way around the system -- if not, the appeal of near-complete anonymity is lost for the various other reasons one might enjoy it that are not trolling. Regardless, one can still be a jackass if people know who you are. Look at registration-required forums for every example you could ever want.
>>
>>10053986
Yeah, it sucks as a definition because it relies on the author's intent when publishing, which is something we'll never positively know and can only infer.

i for one hate trolling and hate tripfags. what am i supposed to do.

Do i go with the ideology that i believe in, or do i go with the anonymous collective.

Either way i find that any thread where theres actual serious discussion and that there is no trolling i find it better. I also find that in discussing series here that are not popular it is easier to identify the various strengths and weaknesses for the show. I wish there was more serious discussion, but if it was all serious discussion then it would suck.

So i guess we should all just troll in moderation...

Oh and i have watched some shows thanks to high levels of hype given to it from anonymous. But i've also heard about shows that i would've never of heard of had it not been due to anonymous.

Either way its better then the shit they serve at most other online discussion boards.

>>
>>10054147
The fact that /a/ is the best is kind of thanks to trolling, but its getting out of fucking hand.

Posting "shitsux" on a serious discussion for no reason is ANNOYING.

Also, nobody even responds to a serious discussion right away.
>>
>>You need to contribute to an eventual 250+ post shitstorm just so the very fabric of our community isn't ripped apart by people who do not value it.

Here's the problem. That's EXACTLY what the trolls want.

Scenario 1: Somebody starts a thread about how awesome Naruto is and NOBODY responds. Except for maybe one or two sarcastic replies with a sage.

Scenario 2: Somebody starts a Naruto thread and 250 people start a shitstorm amongst themselves.

In which case do you think the troll is having more fun? Hint: It's not the first one.

I think your post has merit, Cirno, but that method is not going to stop trolls.

Just don't treat the poster like an idiot unless he does something to justify it, like making a ridiculously stupid argument as to why its good.

I agree with TC. This board's "he likes something that the board doesn't/uses a feature/program that most of the board doesn't, fucktard faggot little bitch troll troll troll" attitude with no real reason behind it other than that its not what their little group does is terrible and takes a lot of the fun out of /a/.

Should've posted this under Anonymous. You can admit that if everyone was a tripfag, /a/ would suck, but you can't complain unless you take the step to stop using a tripcode. I feel like /a/ used to be less tolerant of tripcode users, and now it feels like there's more non-troll ones each day. New people come to /a/ and see that tripfags are integrated and accepted now, so they'll start using tripcodes also.

Heh. I really don't think he's deliberately trolling, though. Maybe it's subconscious... accidental trolling.
>>
The mistake people make is that they assume trolls or shitstorm provoking posts have to be dumb as fuck, the way 95% of all /a/ trolls are.

Look at the night crew, half the time they can laugh off a troll and turn it into fully legit discussion, and they're not Gaia. They still call people faggots when they need to.

Even if he posted it under Anonymous, he's made his "style" far too recognizable during his time with a tripcode. Most tripfags couldn't make the change back to Anonymous just because of that. We'd just get a lot of "Quit posting without your tripcode Cirno," etc.

If we want to keep /a/ good we have to fight trolls. Fighting trolls also makes /a/ bad.

So we should stop trolling.

>>
I take Pride in my ability to differentiate a Troll from your regular anon, (however good I may actually be at this) And While trolls are Definitely an eyesore, It kind of makes the experience of the actual Serious discussion thread that appears every blue moon, more special somehow.
>>

>>

>>
>>10054317
Trolling with pro Naruto threads will encourage discussion of Naruto if no one shits up those threads and makes it known that we hate Naruto.

If trolls create the illusion of a "Popular opinion," and no one contests it, then new users will follow that opinion because they don't know any better.

I explored this thought in the second half of my essay.

He means you shouldn't go "FUCKING TROLL GODDAMN YOU FUCK YOU TO HELL."

Instead, respond seriously and legitimately with a well formed argument that further spurs productive action in the thread instead of turning it into a shitstorm.
>>
>>10054268

That's not really the issue.

The issue is that they troll people over the dumbest shit for no reason other than that its not their opinion/how they do things.

There definitely are people that deserve to have attempts to drive them out aimed at them, but most of the people that get trolled on /a/ don't really fall under that umbrella. Save the treating people like annoying idiots for the annoying idiots.

No, I'm giving you more credit than you deserve as Anonymous. I'm saying that if you talked to three people for several hours over the course of several days face to face, and then had you talk to these same three people wearing masks that you would still be able to differentiate between them. Putting words in people's mouths like this is why we have these stupid problems.

You underestimate the impact that trolling has on shaping the unique dynamic of /a/. While elitism helps to contribute to intolerance of certain series, it is because of trolling that popular shows in general, which otherwise would dominate the board, have short half-lives. For example, currently /a/ is suffering from a Vinland addiction. Elitism would dictate that this relatively-unknown-outside-of-/a/ series would continue its reign; the eventual troll backlash (that i'll be forced to start soon) will hopefully cut back on the Vinland content and promote thread diversity. Elitism and hivemind alone cannot do this. Trolling also forces dedication to any thread one is interested in developing in order to prevent it deteriorating into sageshit. Trolling keeps content posters on their toes and continually provides a mix of fresh content and classic material to /a/. Trolling does have its downsides, which I believe you have overkilled already. I would liken trolls to microbes or weathering; what circlejerking builds up, trolling erodes and frees up resources for diversification elsewhere.

Hello /a/ ^_^ I was wondering if anyone could help me get in contact with "sage". I tried clicking on the email address but Outlook keeps giving me errors when I try to send the message (it may be a problem with Vista). I'm asking because he seems to be in every thread that I enjoy reading and we could be friends, tabun. I was really scared about asking but since Cirno proved that we can all have a fabulous time on /a/ (and that people read long posts, it was hard to keep up with what he was saying) I figured now would be great time to ask. Also, bumps to the front page would be EPIC. Lol.

At the same time, trolling kills legitimate discussion and tears down shows that may not necessarily need tearing down. Trolls are also the same people starting completely retarded or off-topic discussions about stupid shit and getting actual responses (yeah, yeah I realize that may very well describe this topic).

Trolls also breed more trolls and more shitstorms and more anger. Ultimately I can't view them as a good thing.

Sage isn't a person or an email address. It's a practice on the board that involves typing the word "sage" into the email bar. This is done to prevent your post from bumping the topic.

4chan: Repercussions of Trolling

Cirno waited. The lights above him blinked and sparked out of the air. There were troll on the board. He didn't see them, but had expected them now for years. His warnings to Anonymous were not listenend to and now it was too late. Far too late for now, anyway.
Cirno was a tripfag for fourteen years. When he was young he watched the internets and he said to dad "I want to be on the internets."
Dad said "No! You will BE KILL BY TROLLS"
There was a time when he believed him. Then as he got oldered he stopped. But now in the anime board of 4chan he knew there were trolls.
"This is Anonymous" the radio crackered. "You must fight the trolls!"
So Cirno gotted his essay and attacked the trolls.
"HE GOING TO KILL US" said the trolls
"I will shoot at him" said the newfag and he fired the copypasta. Cirno used his hugely inflated ego to block the blast then plasmaed at him and tried to blew him up. But then the ceiling fell and they were trapped and not able to kill.
"No! I must kill the trolls" he shouted
The Anonymous said "No, Cirno. You are the trolls"
And then Cirno was a fucking retard.
