Do you prefer real mecha or super mecha?
Real super mecha
I'm not really fond of mecha.
I'm more of a post-eva mech kinda guy
you know when the mechs are mostly just a side note.
Real and super are terms used by ignorants. They aren't an actual thing.
Also a comment of an ignorant. Mecha has always been focused primarily on character drama. Not everything is transformers or super robot wars.
Like in Vifam, Macross, Dougram, Patlabor and more?
Oh shit we have an expert here.
I prefer fantasy mecha like Escaflowne or Nausicaa. Too bad its hardly ever utilized well.
Aside from that, I'm not a big fan of mecha. I just see mecha as a big suit of armor that the actual people are fighting in. Like a big walking tank. And if too much focus is put on the mechanics of the mecha itself, then too much time is being wasted from the plot and character development. The shows that do mecha well are those that utilize the mecha as just an extension of the people inside the mecha itself. But then, its basically no different from watching a shonen sports anime like Hajime no Ippo or Angelic Layer.
Those legs are poorly made to support sucha large robot. The damn thing would collapse.
>there's still a lot /a/nons who doesn't like mecha
how come you're a male and dislike giant robots? Robots are cool
Armored Core or Chromehounds style where they are used in warfare. I prefer realistic mechs that don't fly.
I don't know I just never got into them.
I preder real mecha, super tend to be a lot more shounen like, and i don't particularity like shounen.
Because I'm a male who likes Mahou Shoujo and big boobs. Show me a show that has Mahou Shoujo, big boobed girls and mecha and I may get interested.
Also, Magic Knight Rayearth only had 2 of those things. And it was really lackluster (except the awesome music).
I love the mechs in Votoms especially. The way their legs bend when they land is cool as fuck.
I liked mecha in Patlabor, which one is it?
Shit's an oxymoron if I ever saw one.
Nothing is more boring than a mech which isn't fully utilizing the fact that it is itself a mech. I'll take 90 mechs from Pacific Rim over 90 APU's from The Matrix.
So Super Robo.
Mecha which TRY to follow real physics close as possible, like FLAG.
>not liking super robo
Mamoru Oshii mecha. So 'realism' mecha. Or 'super high budget' mecha.
I prefer power armor
I also always say I don't like mech, even thou many of my favorite series have giant robots in them
They're all the same to me. Big Robots are the best and render everything obsolete.
In a real world, military industries would have developed big shoulder-launched missiles to combat the big mechas and their super shields, and these tubes would be given to every tom and dick ground trooper.
What about super real mecha?
I prefer mecha without teenagers as pilots.
I'll answer with this.
Real but I can't stand standard Gundam shows and Votoms.
I want a real robot show about a special operations team that works behind the scenes and does dirty work like assassinations of political figures or support of anti-government forces.
Why are we attacking our own forces?
whichever one that gives me an army of mecha versus another army of mecha.
So you want more FLAG, basically?
Or just kill them with what we have right now.
Giant humanoid robots have no practical purpose besides looking cool.
You want Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries the anime
Both, I just love Robots. But I guess I tend to lean to Super.
I really need to watch TTGL. Just fuck eps 7-12, most boring shit in the universe.
Maybe but with a little bit more focus on robots and not found footage style.
I liked how in Code Geass the mechs started out real, and by the end it was just lolpowerlevel.
The code geass manga doesn't even have robots
Why no one told me about this. Why.
I can't really think of anything that fits all three criteria perfectly, which is kind of strange because it seems like something that would have been tried at least a couple times.
The closest thing I can think of off the top of my head is Lord of Lords Ryu Knight and that only works if you count fantasy-genre mages as mahou shoujo. It's also not really something I'd recommend to anyone unless you really just want a shounen battle story that's riddled with every cliche you could think of.
I would suggest Leda and Project A-ko though, if you haven't seen them yet.
I like both and series like SRW that combine it are my favorites.
Not worth mentioning?
I think the anime is better, sure manga had some changes and concentrated more on characters, but it didn't feel right
I either like realistic mechas that are more like "small" and agile combat suits that just give better firepower to the average soldier or full retard gigantic mechas like the emperor class titans in 40k where one of those was like the size of the entire map in winter assault. Either go in a somewhat plausible way or full retard but anything else is just boring.
Real robot, but I've never actually gotten anything real enough for my taste. Probably never will either, Japan can't into hard sci-fi.
That being said Tallgeese is best giant robot.
But which definition are we going with? Probably real since I kind of like games like MechWarrior, AC and FM. Super is just powerlevels and guts bullshit.
Watch the movies then.
Holy shit, someone actually remembers that game.
Man, I want an anime where MC with his trusty speedy all-terrain tank alongside his tank battalion hunts down mechs.
Break Blade was awesome as fuck. OP gives me chills.
>/a/ can into mechanical engineering.
>Mecha (real or super) are actual things in the real world.
stop typing words anon
>lazers are visible
>mechas exist at all
I want my mecha gritty as fuck. I want to be able to taste the grime, oil and diesel.
Also power armor.
not really "power" armor
but still good movie. First minutes were the best
In theory, I prefer real robot.
But my favorite anime series of all time is super, so I don't know.
DAT ENDING ;_;
I like it when shows go to the far ends of the spectrum- I like the god like robos in Rahxephon and TTGL, as well as like how they're portrayed in Patlabor and VOTOMS. Especially Patlabor. Honestly, when it's in between those I lose interest, for instance the more balanced mechs in most Gundam shows and in Code Geass are pretty boring to me.
Gets me every time
RahXephon is criminally underrated
Walker robots do excist.
But as you can expect, they are useless in warzone.
How bout autonomous mechs?
>RahXephon is criminally underrated
No, it's reputation of mediocrity is well deserved, try watching more anime, then you'll understand.
Too many faggots compare it to EVA
When I think of NGE rip-off, should it be RahXephon or Escaflowne? I always mix them up for some reason.
>lazers are visible
given enough power they are visible simply by heating the air. they would also be quite loud due to the rapid expansion of air. like thunder.
I prefer something which wouldn't fall over with a single non-penetrating hit to the torso.
Mechs are cooler, maybe I think that just because I work with tanks everyday....
you mean a multi-legged mecha? or something that can fly?
>what is dynamic balancing?
real robot/real mecha
gundam a shit.
Escaflowne is nothing like Eva
It's barely a mecha
>Giant 60-ton death machines with 120mm guns are boring
Let me laugh harder
You better get your ass ready for Big Dog quick, he's not to fond of falling over.
I wouldn't know since I haven't seen both of them. 10 years passed and those two are still somewhere down low in my backlog.
I just always hear that one of them is a NGE rip-off, but can't remember which one.
It's RahXephon, apparently, as >>100510950 says.
Battle armor: Hnngg
Ultralight mechs: Hnng
Combined arms: hnnnnnggg
Tanks destroying mechs: hnnnnnnnnnnnngggggggg
Knowing is half the battle: ...
If only the setting and tech for mechwarrior wasn't so fucking stupid.
Old and busted mecha.
What do Guymelefs count as
I like the Aesthetics of Reals better, but I kinda like Super Shows better.
How long until a super robot show features something similar to a Valkyrie/Flag/Zeta Gundam/Arios Gundam (or Gundam Kyrios I guess)
To be fair the setting is basically feudal knights with giant robots fighting it out within 50 metres of each other. A game where every mech is basically an artillery piece would be boring as fuck.
If we develop power sources small and powerful enough, that's what it will be. Big mecha are just tall tanks with worse logistical problems and more engineering problems. Power armor is having an infantry squad with a designated mule and someone who can operate crewed weaponry by himself. Or having an entire squad of guys using m2's and mk40's instead of m4's and m203's.
Sadly there isn't many tank crew anime/manga without cute girls thank Igloo
>not metal gears
fuck off the edge of mai dik m8
shit mk19, not mk40.
The moment we develop Powered Armour capable of wielding AT weapons that can penetrate MBTs is the moment MBTs become obsolete.
if we develop power sources small enough we'll have infantry drones.
>Mecha (real or super) are actual things in the real world.
that's hollywood animatronics tier
We already have infantry who can wield such weapons.
fair enough. TBH, if we have the tech to do that, I wouldn't be surprised if we had nanoweapons.
Real mecha fo sho
>People have options for shield, weapons and even an iPhone holder
>even an iPhone holder
You really need close to human level AI to make infantry drones that can operate on their own viable. Without it they're too vulnerable to various forms of electronic warfare.
>Those legs are poorly made to support sucha large robot. The damn thing would collapse.
You have no clue about material strength do you?
They're all the same and I love them both.
My favorite mecha video games tend to be real robot but I don't really know any exceptional real robot animu besides VOTOMS and Patlabor
you could always have regular soldiers operating them from nearby. just because they're drones doesn't mean they need to be fully autonomous.
that sounds very buzzwordy.
we already have them. they're banned as weapons of mass destruction.
Yes but infantry today don't have any kind efficient of protection against canister shot and MG fire.
Imagine a guy armed with several Javelins being in a suit making him invulnerable too anything an MBT could throw against him except a KE round, which the gunner in the MBTwould have to aim at a roughly man sized target instead of another tank.
Now imagine the guy in armor has 5-9 friends.
Tele-operation, brah. Only really works if your enemy are dirt farmers who can't get jamming equipment.
I doubt he's referring to the compression strength of the metal. The thing has fucking cones for feet. I hope there isn't mud or broken terrain in its theater.
i thought i was the only one who thought this.
My fuckin nigga!
It's one thing to get an exoskeleton working. it's another to have a walking set of armor that is still mobile.
Which nanoweapons are those? I wasn't aware we had nanobots. It sounds buzzwordy because you're a moron. If you say anything about chemical or biological weapons, I will fuck your face.
Of course, still it would have it's uses, unlike a mech.
Radio operation is always going to be vulnerable to jamming. And point to point optical isn't really viable for combat. I'd agree that something like a mixed drone/human squad would work.
Yeah, but even the next level up from dirt farmers can field basic radio jamming equipment.
>I liked how in Code Geass the mechs started out real, and by the end it was just lolpowerlevel.
Technically it's just a compressed example of what Gundam itself does, and yet that invented Real Robot as far as anime goes. Gundam was never "pure" in this area either.
>The code geass manga doesn't even have robots
Which doesn't quite work, since you have basically the same scale of story but only with a few planes or helicopters left. Everything else is on foot.
Something like this.
thats a front mission wanzer
also i need to play the translated iso i downloaded the other day
>Radio operation is always going to be vulnerable to jamming
that's rather asymmetric though, the jammed one is in advantage here compared to the jammer.
Gundam is weird, because they have magical people when they don't have magical mechs.
I'm probably being a heretic, but I enjoyed war in a pocket and 8th MS team and can't stand most of the other gundam titles.
But if all your forces are remote operated drones it basically renders all your forces useless.
It's not anime but i like ZoE, i don't know exactly if it's super or real.
I like both, but dislike 'reals' that are inexplicably more powerful than a good chunk of Supers.
Supers masquerading as reals I LOVE.
Getter Go does this very well.
I like both types of mecha. They both have their good series.
ZoE is more super for sure but they're used in a more 'real' environment, I guess.
I like when mecha are prominently featured but never become the true focal point of the series, and are instead used to accentuate
>Real and super are terms used by ignorants. They aren't an actual thing.
This is false.
Babby's first getter
I kinda think the design of the mechs are more for real than super, but yeah i suspected
I enjoy both ends of the scale, though I never really understood people who couldn't get into supers. Pound for pound, supers will always be infinitely more fun to watch than reals.
I mean what does the real robot genre got that can compare to pic related?
Though the worst are those middle-of-the-road types, like gundams or code geass, which trick you by introducing a real robot setting, and then shit everything up with robots that basically run on magic.
I like plausibly real settings in my chinese cartoons. Super robots can't into realism.
Total agreement about gundam and geass; the mechas become a batlle anime level-up, in a setting that initially leads you to believe that such level-ups won't happen. Both series are plagued by SCIENCE of course.
>check out the not-nuke this highschooler invented
Supers are for kids, reals are for teens.
Nope, its a stupid term. There are only a handful of shows with piloted robots that would be plausibly realistic.
The robots in your Gundam and Macross are no more in the realm of reality than Mazinger or Getter are. Especially when they are piloted by Jedi and start shooting out magic peace particles.
Takemikaduchi is mai waifu
The real in real mecha does not mean realistic.
But mecha aren't real.
>Not just enjoying robots and vehicles in general
>Though the worst are those middle-of-the-road types, like gundams or code geass, which trick you by introducing a real robot setting, and then shit everything up with robots that basically run on magic.
I'd completely disagree. Hybrids are actually pretty interesting and sometimes more than either extreme. Case in point: Mobile Suit Gundam originally started out with lots of Super Robot gimmicks despite taking place in a war setting. That doesn't mean the robots "run on magic" like you claim, but the fact is it's narrow-minded to assume a strong position when ultimately no cartoon is remotely portraying robots in a way that's plausible or that a real life engineer or military man wouldn't laugh out of the room.
In other words, chill out and be flexible.
>Total agreement about gundam and geass; the mechas become a batlle anime level-up, in a setting that initially leads you to believe that such level-ups won't happen. Both series are plagued by SCIENCE of course.
SCIENCE plagues the entire concept of Giant Robots doing anything at all.
I also think you're looking at the setting quite selectively in both cases.
What does it mean then? If you are going to classify things, then there need to be some rules regarding what makes something a real robot vs a super robot.
Are tanks count as real mecha?
Super mecha, because "real mecha" is an oxymoron. Its like saying you want anatomically correct dragons in your fantasy RPG.
Tanks are just as good, if not better, than any mecha.
The answer is the same as for "will we ever see S3 of FMP" question.
Don't start. Wikipedia it.
It this discussion starts this thread will become shit.
Killed by infantry.
The rebuttal of someone who doesn't even know enough to defend their own position.
Outside of SRW, Japan doesn't even distinguish between Super or Real robots because it is arbitrary.
Here is an exercise in futility: tell me why Gunbuster is a super or a real robot and then explain why it can't be the other.
is FMP worth watching?
>not an anime
>Outside of SRW, Japan doesn't even distinguish between Super or Real robots because it is arbitrary.
What's this then?
Its ok, but very overrated by nostalgia fags.
Do you like robot knife fights?
Why would you ask such stupid question? Just try it yourself and decide whether it's worth watching or not. It's alright, I enjoyed both combat and non-combat parts of it, but it doesn't mean that you will.
Be advised that BD rips looks like shit sometimes, though. DVD rips ain't great either, if I remember correctly.
Is there a single Gundam series that isn't pretentious garbage with an insufferable protagonist and bullshit tryhard pseudo-philisophical writing from the grand king of the faggots Tomino?
It's also the only gundam that owned up to its crazy bullshit.
The one Imagawa made
war in the pocket
i guess the kid is a little insufferable.
From Tomino? Crossbone is pretty straight forward but you'll have to read that.
I'm sick and tired of hearing complaints from people who have no idea about the history behind the Gundam franchise continue to force their ideas of what it "should be" down others throats. Here's a wake up call: Gundam is NOT Mechwarrior. Gundam is NOT Battletech. Gundam is NOT Gears of War.
Gundam by design embodies a lot of angst felt in a country that LOST WWII. That's why the majority of its protagonists fight defensively, whine or have philosophical discussions about war. If you're looking for a show about grunts charging heroically into battle shouting "'MURRICA F**K YEAH!" (or the equivalent), you are going to be disappointed. And "newtype magic", as many people complain about, is a much a part of Gundam as the Force is to Star Wars. Deal with it or leave.
>Gundam is NOT Gears of War
How the fuck GoW is even related?
Reference to realismfags.
Gundam is a pretentious as fuck toy commercial created by an insane man who is arrogant enough to think that he's portraying the nuances of war by having toys smashing into each other and blasting lasers around.
Fuck you and fuck Tomino.
Aww u mad bro?
But crossbone is fucking dogshit. The characters, the plot, the art, and all the mecha besides the X1&2 are just bad.
Why would you hate Tobia?
Bland prepubescent 007.
He has no flaws or any defining characteristics besides being a perfect hero. He is the antithesis of the average Gundam protagonist, but manages to be just as awful.
Does Uso fall into the same category as Tobia then? Is Jewdough fine with you, or is he just as terrible as the others?
I like my mechs to look like REX.
Star Driver, except replace Mahou Shoujo with Mahou Shounen
Realistic because it actually makes me feel i could ride one in real life,at least. Not like you fags with all your coolness. With the inconvenient that i will be like 90 or death when that happens. Yeah.
>Mecha has always been focused primarily on character drama.
all anime is focused on character drama, and character development
basically i'm asking wtf are you trying to say here
I like real mecha more, but super mecha shows can be a lot of fun.
Nobody likes that faggot shit
I like you.
I like the setting in heavy object, it's not really mecha in the sense that they are not humanoid robots, but it is nice.
Fuck you, nigger.
I loved Patlabor.
Give it some arms, and... why not.
Do you even Ai Senshi son?
I wish macross had the same release schedule as Gundam. I mean I love Gundam and all, But I adore Macross, even frontier and its jpop.
Has anyone ever complained about the force in star wars? Also newtypes are cool yo, Funnels OP and shit.
My African American!
I like Front Mission, anime mecha never interested me.
utulitarian, no superspecialawesome prototypes, no Gundanium,no autistic super pilots and no insane custom units that can shrug off bullets like it's nothing.
So far only Votoms ( if you don't count the Super Survivor gene BS) and Patlabor come to mind.
you can pick one up for a little over U$D1000,000
I would like a front mission or Ace combat anime.
Why do you care whether the robots are realistic? I watch mecha for the characters and battles. Char Aznable is one of the most amazing characters anime has ever delivered.
I should disclaim that I like patlabor and votoms too, I just see mecha as a vehicle for the characters, not the entire show itself, although some shows do make the mecha more important.
I also like Gundam but I just love the nothing special look and feel of Votoms and Patlabor.
Gundam + Gackt = Wet Panties
Oh I agree, my favorite units in gundam are the amazing GM series and its variants. Imagine if 08th ms team went full GM (no gundams everything else would probably be the same) like it was intended to be.
>Do you prefer real mecha or super mecha?
I prefer mecha musume.
PS: I love the video of the guy who wrote the software for Kuratas. Such passion.
Mecha is crap.
Mecha musume on the other hand...
Military sci-fi mecha.
To be honest this thing is pathetic. Slow and lame.
Wataru YOSHIZAKI, author of V-Sido robot operating system.
You have to start somewhere.
They picked the perfect pilot.
Honestly even primitive computers started that way.
Give it time, around 20-30 years, you'll have a system that responds in real time.
I love Gundam.
It has inspired so many.
landmates from appleseed?
Mecha is honestly boring.
More often than not I just can't bring myself to care about the characters and the fights are shit.
>I'm not interested in mecha.
>But you've only seen TTGL and Code Geass, and you loved both of them!
>Yeah, but they're different.
But they are.
Mah african comrade of inferior descent!
my brothers of african ancestry!
Mah filthy subhuman brother of african ancestry!
Realistic. Mostly due to scale concerns. My suspension of disbelief can withstand pretty much anything aside from things which are too big, and most super-mecha are way too big.
Also, mecha with swords and wings and shit is for faggots.
Would anyone else watch a Maschinen Kreiger anime?
>I just can't bring myself to care about the characters
Why? Because they (mostly) don't conform to your standard MC archetypes and you can't easily self-insert? if so that's a pretty shallow reason.
<--- Come back to me after you've watched this.
Real mecha with pilots that act like they're piloting super robots.
Mecha is good, mecha musume is not bad, but Accel World is shit.
>mecha with swords and wings and shit is for faggots
Why do you hate fun?
Because most of the time those shows try to take themselves seriously whilst also having retarded mech designs.
If a show's implausible but knows it and owns it, then I'll enjoy it.
I prefer realistic mechas / powersuits. Strange that this show isn't mentioned even if it never was that grea to begin with, but realistic mechas are a rarity. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1vEAOqCNFw
I guess this show is borderline mecha aswell.
>light amplification by zanky emission of radiation?
If they are Tank-Kun, yes they do
Turn A, it is a masterpiece. Somehow, Tomino stopped being a shite writer/director for one whole year.
>Because most of the time those shows try to take themselves seriously whilst also having retarded mech designs.
Pretty much every mecha ever, except for the parodies, or comedy-intensive things like TTGL.
Why does that tank have a christmas tree on it?
>if too much focus is put on the mechanics of the mecha itself, then too much time is being wasted from the plot and character development
When does that happen?
No mecha ever discusses technology.
All /m/ talks about is characters and factions, not machinery.
I swear I'm going to VOTOMS. Which should I start with, and what subs are best?
Both although, I'm surprised I got through Votoms and some of its spin offs, and I'm really taking my time with Shin Mazinger, not really feeling it.
Real and super are useful terms. And they are a thing. And they are useful even if real and super robots are equally unrealistic in reality.
A real robot show might try to actually explain things about mechs like why there aren't more of them, how they're made, their energy source and so on and do so by claiming super science. A real robot show might have a more down to Earth atmosphere.
A super robot show is a lot more likely to say "shit 's magic I don't gotta splain shit" and literally have mystic/magic origins for robots.
Saying the terms real and super are stupid and don't matter is like saying science fiction and fantasy don't matter once the feats being performed with tech/magic reach X level. The type of atmosphere/tone still matters.
you are the cancer
I think there is only one sub group.
Gritty is not real.
Shit, reality doesn't even have a coffee filter.
Because tanks celebrate christmas too!
>reality doesn't even have a coffee filter
Those things look like coffee filters to me.
Filter coffee is garbage and you should feel bad for liking it.
More to your liking?
Classic Battletech is pretty weeaboo. Can i count that as Mecha?
These are the perfect combination of tank and mecha.
/m/ has a hard on for the Tallgueese.
Hold on to your butts because I'm going to go /v/ for a second here.
But would anyone watch a mecha anime about supreme commander?
I would watch it, but it probably wouldn't be very good.
I like these as tank-mecha combos.
One can't hate the tachikomas.
I'd watch one about the cybran, but if it were made it would follow the Aeon because qt3.14 princess. Fuck the Aeon though, I always used to get wrecked by those fucking t3 gunships.
I'd watch it if all commanders were replaced by little girls.
See, I didn't think much of the characters. I don't even remember them, now. The game is too focused on strategy and massing armies that I don't really see how the anime would be any better than just zooming up close on some battle replays.
I like Macross and dislike Gundam.
