You tighten your grip around the note you found in your locker as the wind grabs hold of you and rustles the leaves overhead. “Please meet me behind gymnasium after your final lesson.” the note reads. It's unsigned, but your intuition tells you that it’s written by a girl. School has been over for five minutes already, and you’re still all alone behind the building.

Soon enough, you hear footsteps in the crunchy leaves covering ground. A girl you’ve never seen before turns the corner, and lets out a squeal that’s muffled by her scarf. “Oh! Sorry, Anon! I didn’t see you!” she manages to say before lowering her gaze to the ground.

You are completely unfamiliar with this girl. She’s not in any of your classes, that’s for sure. Yet she called you out here. She quickly looks back at you for a second, but quickly averts her eyes once again.

“Uh… You’re probably wondering why I called you out here…” She keeps looking at the ground covered in brown leaves as she speaks. “Well, you see, I… I…” She’s hesitating. This scenario bears an odd resemblance to those cliché confessions you’ve seen in countless manga. “Anon, I… I’ve always l-”

“Anon, I… I’ve always loved you!”

It seems like the girl in front of you spent all her energy to bring you that message. She looks like she’s about to slump over, but her feet remains planted firmly on the ground. The sound of her breath is the only thing you hear. Even the rattling of the autumn leaves seemingly disappears in this climactic moment.

Several seconds pass. Both of you remain silent. A sudden gust of wind brings back the tunes of nature, and the girl’s black bangs gets pushed away from her face. Her eyes are still firmly planted on her own two feet.

“Aren’t you going to say anything?” she asks, still not looking at you.

You strengthen your resolve, and ask the question that has been nagging you since the second you read the conspicuos note. “Who are you exactly?”

The girl freezes in place. It’s as if her entire being suddenly turned into hard granite. You figured it would turn out like that, but her non reaction is pretty impressive nonetheless. She clenches her fists slightly before letting out her breath.

“You don’t remember me?” she says. Or, more like whimpers. It’s hard to make out every word from behind her scarf.

“No.” you say. There’s no reason to hide it. Fooling this girl won’t bring any of you joy. While you might have known her before, her face is that of a stranger.

At last, the girl looks up. Her blue eyes glister in the sunlight. “Even after we… We…” She’s sobbing. Without saying anything more she looks back down and turn away from you. “S-sorry for bothering you.” You can hear that she’s trying to force away the tears pooling in the corner of her eyes.

As you see her long, black hair flowing out from her cap, you feel funny, as if something is scratching the insides of your brain. The peculiar feeling disappears as quickly as it came, and an urge to speak to the girl replaces it.

“Yukarin, I…” You have no idea why you called the girl Yukarin, but the girl stops in her tracks the moment you utter the name.

“Yukarin, I have amnesia.” You stick with the name that fell into your head all of a sudden. It seems to have made an impact. You haven’t told anyone in your classes about what happened, but you’ve got a feeling that the girl with the wavy black hair is connected to your past.

“I was in an accident a year ago. I hit my head pretty bad. ’ve lost all recollection of the people I once knew.” It’s a tragic story. Everything was lost to you. You remember the feeling of waking up in a hospital with strangers surrounding your bed. People you had known all your life, erased from your mind as if from a flash drive.

Before you’re able to continue, the girl in front of you turns around. Tears are streaming down her face, but she’s smiling with her entire being. “But you remembered my name!” she shouts in glee as she throws herself towards you in a longing embrace.

You lock your arms around her back and hug Yukarin tightly. You can feel your own tears swelling up, but you swallow the lump in your throat and force them back.

Yukarin doesn’t seem to want to let go. She’s rubbing her face on your chest. It’s cute, and it makes you feel warm inside, but it doesn’t change the fact that you have no memories of the girl.

When the embrace comes to an end, you grab Yukarin’s shoulders and look her in the eyes. It’s time to get serious. “Yukarin, I am sorry that I cannot remember you. You seem like a sweet girl, but I am not the person you fell in love with.”

It seems like Yukarin finally has found the courage to look into your eyes as well. “As long as I can be with you, Anon, I’ll be happy.” As she says that, she leans in for another hug. Her bangs are messed up from being rubbed all over your jacket, but she doesn’t seem to mind tangling them even more.

“We’ll have to get to know each other again. From scratch.” You can’t dismiss her. She seems connected to your past. And she confessed her love to you in the most cliché way ever.

“Then let’s go on a date!” she suggests, raising her voice. “Let’s meet up in the park later today!”

Wait, should we check the gender of the "girl"? Maybe everything is in "her" plan. Like how you got amnesia a year ago. Or how "she" kept asking you to call "her" "Yukarin" before you got amnesia. We don't want to have a yandere trap as a "girlfriend", right?

“I’d love to.” You smile and look at her. She smiles back and giggles.

“I’ll see you there at six o’clock.” she says. Yukarin lingers for a moment before backing off. “Promise you won’t be late.”

“I promise.” Yukarin giggles again, and runs off with a smile. She rounds the corner, and you’re all alone behind the gymnasium once again. You just stare into the distance, dumbfounded by what had just transpired.

The sun is setting as you make your way home. There’s still time before you have to start moving to the park. Might as well dropp off your things before meeting Yukarin again.

Your cellphone cuts through the sounds of autumn all around you. You fish it out of your pocket, and notice your mother’s face on the screen before picking up. She likes to check up on you every day. Even though you’ve lost your memories of her as well, you’re still her son.

[1/2]
>>
> accept her offer
>>
“You sound gleeful today. Did something happen?” Your mother is pretty perceptive.

“I guess. I’m going on a date with a girl named Yukarin soon.” You’ve eased into the role of son, but you’re still not perfectly comfortable being so open with your own mother.

“It makes your mother very happy to hear that you’ve made friends already.” She must’ve been afraid that you were a loner. Your situation is rather unique, after all. You finish your conversation, and hurry on home.

Getting home took longer than you anticipated. You must’ve forgotten to walk fast while talking to your mother. That doesn’t change the fact that you might be late for your date with Yukarin. The sun has disappeared below the horizon, and the wind is still blowing every now and then.

Even though you’re running you’ll have to take a shortcut to get there on time. If you run through the graveyard, you’ll probably manage, but you can’t deny the fact that only the thought of it is unsettling. Especially at this time of day.

>[ ] Take the shortcut through the graveyard.

No matter how unsettling the graveyard is, you promised to show up on time. Through the graveyard it is.

Old trees are creaking everywhere around you as you run through the empty graveyard. You don’t believe in fairy tales, but if the dead were to walk, this would be an excellent time. Your heart rate rises as you pass gravestones and tombs, and you’re sure it has little to do with the running.

You breathe a sigh of relief as you exit on the other side. You laugh at little to yourself as you realize your fears were not grounded in reality. You keep the pace up, and before long you can see the park up ahead.

[1/2]
>>
The park is situated on a plateau above a river. You’ve visited it a few times during your stay in the city, often to collect your thoughts. You look around, but can’t see Yukarin anywhere. Spotting the tree overlooking the hill going down to the river, you decide sit down and wait for Yukarin to appear.

The darkness is too thick to figure out details in the distance. Instead you listen to the wind rustling the remaining leaves above your head.

But the serene setting is interrupted by the sudden sound of one of the swings moving. You tilt your head and see Yukarin swinging back and forth.

You stand up and walk towards the swings. “Hey! Yukarin!” you shout as you approach her. For a fraction of a second it seems like she’s startled, but her composure returns so fast that you doubt what you saw.

“Oh! Hey! You’re here already?” She does sound mildly surprised, though. She had her back turned towards you, but now that you’ve come up to her, you’re facing each other.

“I promised I’d be here on time, didn’t I?” you say and smile at her. She giggles and jumps off the swing. The gravel below her feet crunches as she lands. She’s wearing the same cap and scarf from earlier today. You look at each other, both completely silent, as you stand in the dark, desserted park.

The darkness around you feels heavy. But Yukarin’s smile lights up the night like a lighthouse. You wait fur her to break the stalemate between you two. She was the one who invited you, after all.

“So, Anon…” she says as she takes a few steps towards you. “You lost your memories and moved all the way out here?” Her tone is cheerful, as is her smile. She walks up to you and lays her hands on your chest. “It must’ve been hard on you. Lonely, even.”

She’s right. The people you once knew had a hard time accepting what happened to you. After a lengthy hospital stay, some couldn’t manage to remain by your side. Your therapist suggested that you should start anew somewhere away from your old life. That’s why you’re here now. “You’re right.” you say. “It was difficult to keep living the life of the previous me. Of someone else.”

“But me feelings reached you nonetheless.” Yukarin looks up at you. Her eyes are gleaming, even in the dead of night. “I want you to receive all of my love, Anon…” she says, as she goes for the kiss.

You’ve only known her for a few hours, but you feel a strange connection with Yukarin. As she leans in to kiss you, you realize that she might be the person you need in your life right now. You pull her close, and your lips connect.

The kiss lasts. You feel lightheaded. It’s your first kiss. As far as you remember anyway. You finally pull apart, and you look Yukarin in the eyes. They’re glowing. Your first kiss was as electrifying as you had hoped it would be.

But Yukarin’s eyes are glowing. And her smile is now more a grin than anything. And you’re still feeling lightheaded. Your body feels heavy, and you fall backwards, onto the grass.

“Oh, Anon… Are you feeling under the weather?” Yukarin’s voice isn’t cute anymore. It’s mocking. You can barely move a muscle. Yukarin is standing above you, so you have no problem seeing her. “You probably have a lot of questions right now, but the short version is that my kind feeds on life force. You just lost a chunk of yours.”

The glow in Yukarin’s eyes slowly fades to nothing. You’re confused, and a billion thoughts race through your head. But your mind is clouded by whatever the girl standing above you did to you.

“Here’s the deal.” Yukarin goes down on all four above your body, facing you eye to eye. The look in her eyes makes you wish you had a katana at hand. And the ability to move your body. “From this day forth, you’ll help me find suitable meals.” She lays her hand on your cheek. “If you refuse, I’ll drain you dry.” This time, her smile is filled with malicious intent. “So think reaaal hard about it until tomorrow, OK?”

Suddenly, her aura reverts to that of the cute, reserved girl from earlier. She smiles, and kisses you again. As the world goes black around you, you wonder if Yukarin ever existed in the first place. Maybe you’re just a fool, easy to string along.
