Friendly reminder that the Goblins did nothing wrong.
They have legitimate reasons for killing the Landers and Adventurers.
The Landers kept giving Adventurers quests telling them to kill all the Goblins and the Adventurers kept assassinating their elected leader every time they managed to unify their race.
Furthermore they kill children sure but Adventurers and Landers also kill indiscriminately and frankly have done a lot more damage to Goblins than they have to Landers/Adventurers throughout the history of Elder Tale.
Please remember when all the Goblins die in battle against the Adventurers that they are just fighting to protect their kin from the Lander and Adventurer scum.

They explain it in the novels. It has some utility because guild halls have to be manually kept clean, otherwise they look as dirty and shit as Hamelin's did.

But you can hire Landers (like Sara, from the WWB manga) to do it for cheap, so players don't normally pick it.

Serara chose it to be helpful to Crescent Moon while she thought about what subclass she wanted to be.

>Its pretty hardcore compared to WoW

Only 80-100 hours of gameplay to go from level 1 to 90 in Elder Tale. That's pretty much in line with WoW and other modern MMOs. Fairly casual weekend warriors will cap in a couple months.

Hardcore is when the hardcore games playing like it's their job take more like four or more months to cap and the casuals take a year.

I get the impression that ET's optional endgame hardmode stuff is more hardcore than WoW's though. Krusty's led 96-man raids for his badass gear. Those are still oldschool wipe-for-months-until-you-work-it-out type things you can't just read a guide online for.

Well in (modern) MMOs, levels are just a means of stat boosting. Levels do not directly correlate to strength, as a poorly geared level 90 can still be slain by a knowledgeable party of level 70s-80s. This is why true power is evaluated through equipment, items, and the combination of these two with the talents of a specific class.

Most players don't play to attain that 'true power', though. Most players want to be part of some aspect of the social experience instead of participating in the actual gameplay. This is why they're termed 'casuals' to begin with.
>>
>>100493761
The early non-animu drawings (they're up thread somewhere) showed them as just having cat ears, not full furry mode, which wouldn't be so bad.

Then again, considering that I'm sure a bunch of those players would have been furries to begin with, they must be overjoyed.

On top of that, most AoE spells in MMOs have either total damage caps or limited targets to prevent AoE farming from being overpowered. A literal army of level 20 - 30 mobs is a significant problem for everyone, especially if you are trying to protect low level people and landers as a level 90 that can't aggro for shit..

>Believing the Lander-biased history spoonfed to you by a Lander historian.
Sure sure except that when they suddenly appeared the Landers probably started attacking them assuming them to be savages which would have been what started the first big war. If this didn't happen then why do you think the Goblins all banded together against the Landers despite being a bunch of distant tribes which were supposedly stupid and barbaric.
Even if you assume they were actually created to destroy humanity and all truly wish to do so as Lander-mage kun stated you still can't deny the argument that he also stated that over 50% of the Landers died in the war which gave birth to the Goblins.
From this fact you can deduce that at the time of the Goblins initial creation there were more Goblins than Landers and as such the ideal solution leading to the least deaths in the long run would be all the Landers dieing while the Goblins all lived.

Also even if they were savages who could only think of killing Landers to start with it's been a long time and the so called genius goblins talked about in the last thread clearly shows that they aren't anymore.
Still regardless of whether or not they've changed their ways the Landers and Adventurers still hunt them for fun instead of trying to reason with them and sort out some kind of peace treaty.
With all the technological advancements made by the Adventurers they have a fairly solid chance of ending the feud with Goblins and saving a lot of lives in the long run.

Tldr my points about Goblins being unfairly persecuted are solid from a reasoning perspective and if Mamare didn't write them how I envision them then he's a shitty writer with no idea how civilizations work.
He isn't by the way.

Also I should mention that even if they are still all determined to kill all Landers that you should look at things from their perspective.

They've been forced into a war lasting for hundreds of years (As the Alvs obviously made sure they would always try to kill all Landers when creating them) and since every time they die they lose some memories they can't even remember the time spent with their wives/children or possibly if they even have wives/children.

Meanwhile if the Landers didn't keep giving Adventurers quests to do with killing Goblins and just asked for their help whenever the Goblins attacked the non military members of the Goblin race would be able to live their lives peacefully.

Please stop the oppression Mamare.

Every WoW expansion had completely broken AoE farm locations as well. All you have to do is find them soon after launch and keep quiet. I've farmed shit for hours every day that had its drops removed entirely after a month or so. Before that it used to drop multiple cloth crafting mats AND money per mob with like 10 - 20 mobs per pull with enough pulls that you can keep farming without downtime.

If they are still like that after 20 years, they have done something wrong, also since the apocalypse everything has to be used active anyway, even a shield, so they should actually be able to evade actively, if they are fast enough.

If the Goblins are ever working en-mass to attack the Landers then they have reason to kill the Goblins and as such can give the order for the adventurers to attack the goblin king.
If there are Goblins within a 10km radius of a village (or whatever distance they find to be dangerous) then they can give orders for the Adventurers to attack.
Otherwise as the Goblins are unlikely to attack their towns them giving quests to kill goblins is just evil and only enhancing the longstanding hatred for Landers that the Goblins have.

Just because they respawn doesn't necessarily mean they don't age like the adventurers.
If they did then why would the Goblins even bother waiting for the Goblin king to respawn every time instead of just arranging to all meet up at a specified area after they respawn and attack again.
The Goblins of the current age at the very least appear to be intelligent enough to think up such a plan so the logical conclusion would be that Goblins can still die of old age like Landers.

The Goblins respawn anyway so arguing about multiplications in numbers is kind of dumb.
Still the reason I said they should eliminate all Goblins within a 10 meter radius is to prevent frequent village raids.
Also if the Landers were so concerned about raids they could just build walls around their towns and wait for the adventurers to show up to stop any raiding parties that show up and clear the 10 meter or so radius of Goblins again.

It's hasn't been proven that it's their only reason for living just that it's the main one. They likely also live to procreate.

So what you're saying is that the Landers should exterminate all the Goblins because they wish to exterminate all the Landers.

Typically your arguments would hold merit, but you have to keep in mind this is a fantasy and the demi-humans were magically created to sow misery and terror. This is what they did.

They were very explicit about the fact that before Adventurers arrived on the scene the demi-humans were killing off all humanity, and that if it weren't for the adventurers all would have been lost.
>>

>>
>>100496382
Landers procreate like the Adventurers do, they don't just respawn.
>>
>>100496369
They were only killing off humanity because they were forced to by the alvs and humanity would have killed them if they didn't.
If you're arguing about the begginning of the Goblin-Lander fued it's already been established that the Goblins were in the right at the start since their were more of them than there were Landers and by killing all the Landers countless lives would be saved in the long run.

Also if the Goblins do manage to kill all of humanity then they wouldn't be sowing misery and terror but just living their lives like the Landers do.

But isn't it exactly the same thing except without sex for Goblins.
The goblins respawn as babies and lose some of their memories.
Putting aside the fact that we don't know how much of their memories they lose when they respawn there's also the fact that they're brought back to life in the body of a baby with an underdeveloped brain and thus likely lose some memories that way too.
If a person gets amnesia then they're a different person so why doesn't the Goblin respawn count as a different Goblin?
>>
>>100496456
They may indeed go somewhere, but that doesn't necessarily mean they undergo respawning/reincarnation as with demihumans or adventurers. They might simply dissipate into the surrounding environment and become part of the world rather. After all, both demihumans and adventurers are unnatural creations born from the use of World Fraction. You shouldn't use their natures as a precedent for that of the Landers who predate them.

>Atoms and energy return to the rest of the world in one way or another after you die.

Let's keep this in the fantasy universe, the rules can still remain relatively consistent but the world they're in seems to have its own laws of reality.

If we start talking about energy in our own universe I'd point out that entropy is a very real facet of our reality, atoms constantly decay and the expansion of our universe means the pool is getting bigger every day with no new water being added. Someday you won't be able to swim in it anymore.

The biggest problem I have here is that you're claiming a person is made up entirely of their mind, and that their mind isn't somehow related to their brain and the body that houses it. When you as a human being are comprised of all your parts, how you think is affected by the state of your body. The state of your body has feedback on your mind, a damaged brain will have a damaged mind, a person out of shape will think differently then how they would if they were in shape.

Not to mention epigenetics, a kind of new branch of study opening up which is really fucking fascinating.

The mind is the brain?
I assume you mean memories in relation to the word mind and the physical brain in relation to brain.
In that case I am correct in my assertions as memories are a physical thing and are only obtained by a change in the formation of the brain.
And I do understand that things such as nutrients or testosterone levels influence brain formation, personalities, and thus memories. I never stated they didn't.
What defines a person is still their memories and personality so I don't see how I was wrong there.

You didn't point out how they're not a different person though.
All you did was talk about how yes someone with the self sacrifice gene is more likely to become a soldier twice even after they get amnesia because their body influences their personality.
>>
>>100498883
Because memories are more than just a plainly physical thing, we don't fully understand how the brain functions but we believe memristors play considerable into it, your mind is made up of the physical topology of your brain and the voltages and currents within it. These things in turn are affected by your body.

My guess is that a person with amnesia probably had the electrical component of their mind disrupted somehow, maybe through some brief superficial damage to the physical topology of the brain.

So point is that a person with amnesia is not an entirely different person because the entirety of their mind, what made them who they are, isn't suddenly made anew by forgetting their name.
>>
>>100499300
It's more nuanced then that, to use a direct analogue from the study I linked a person who doesn't like cherries before amnesia won't like cherries afterwards.

We consider quirks like fruit aversion and the like to be a part of a person's personality.

>>100499191

>>100499613
>Implying current which is just the flow of electrons is not a physical thing.
>Implying energy is not a physical thing.
I don't...
Look even if our brain somehow functions via some magic wherein energy plays a part in the though process yet isn't just acting as pions or something the brain is still a physical thing and memories as such would still be stored in it or in the magical energy which does not act like actual energy which you seem to posit exists.
I get if you want to believe that the universe isn't a deterministic system with fate being an actual thing but it really is.
>>
>>100499803
But wouldn't that have more to do with taste buds and their relevant portion of the brain?
Even if a person becomes another one who ends up being fairly similar after amnesia they're still a different person so you could still say that the first person is dead.

Killing other people is evil. Terrorist or not. But it is the responsibility of the guardian to carry the blame, the reason, the guilt that comes with taking another life. But these things are what separates men of reason from beasts; that man can contemplate cause and effect, right and wrong, hope and despair. And that is the difference between a force of good and a force of evil:

Evil cannot comprehend good.

>Implying current which is just the flow of electrons is not a physical thing.
>Implying energy is not a physical thing.

God dammit, I didn't imply that and you're taking umbrage with a nonsensical implication in part because I think you're aware that you're wrong. I just drew attention to the electrical activity because I think that's where the problem lies with regards to amnesia.

And what do you mean by magical energy? And who said that I denied the universe is deterministic?

I don't think it matters, because we'd never be able to prove the universe is deterministic, and so creating a model which perfectly predicts the future is impossible. But that's a different story.

The good choice is always to take the option which ends with the least number of deaths of intelligent species overall.
The good choice would therefore logically be for the Landers to all let themselves be killed as that way in the long run the most lives will be saved.
I should mention however that if you do follow the good choice to the utmost logical extreme in the real world that the only right thing to do is to kill everyone in the world so that they can't have children who will die one day too so you should probably only follow the right choice in relation to immediate dilemma.
In this case war counts as an immediate dilemma and since the Goblins cannot be wiped out and the Landers can the right choice is to kill all the Landers.

'Another one that becomes fairly similar'?

Do you not think a person's body and physical makeup plays an extremely important role in who a person is? That a person is entirely composed of their memories and that once those are lost the body and brain no longer serve a role to define who that person is?

Seriously though, if you want to be so nitpicky about a person only being that person when they remain exactly the same then I'm a different person every second. You'd obfuscate any reason to debate under useless syntax.
>>
>>100500744
But you did say that electrons weren't physical
>>100499613

You then went on to talk about how electron flow plays a movement in memory formation and retention.
As for the magical energy stuff that was the logical conclusion from what you were saying so I thought you believed in something stupid like that.
Sorry if I mistook you but you didn't word it very well.

Please, quote me where I expressly said electrons aren't physical.

>memories are more than just a plainly physical thing.

Electrons aren't 'plainly physical', I still consider energy to be a different state of matter. But this isn't here nor there, my point is that the voltage states of your neurons play just as important a role in your brain as do the dendrites that compose the neural network of your brain.

I don't believe in a soul, if that clears things up for you. There is a mind though because I think, therefore I am. But I think that mind is the result of my body and my interactions with our reality.
>>
>>100501135
I'm saying that the body will affect the personality (e.g testosterone levels affect aggression and muscle growth and having a dick therefore affects the likelihood of you enjoying sports and working out.) but that you as an existence are your memories and personality and since your memories also affect your personality along with your body and the various chemicals within it when someone gets amnesia they are a different person.
They can be similar but not the same.
And yes technically you are a different person with every instant of brain formation however the new person you are builds upon the old base person with the old base memories thus keeping your beliefs and personality the same unless you experience some life changing situation or are an idiot who hasn't thought about how the world is.
>>
>>100501448
But they only have giraffes
>>
>>100501461
And I'm saying that a person doesn't lose all their memories with amnesia. Setting aside the fact amnesiacs typically don't forget vast tracks of who they are, such as language comprehension or many of the memes they've formed throughout their lives, such as stoves burn, perhaps they can still drive cars, ect.

They also don't forget genetically imprinted memories, which also define who they are, nor do they lose their body and brain, which quite literally define who they are.
>>
>>100501452
But matter is just energy condensed into a point. That is why quarks and thus protons and neutrons can work.
Electrons are certainly really more waves than matter which is why they can only exist within orbitals however if you're going to argue that energy is not a physical thing merely because we can not touch it without absorbing it then you could say the same of all matter as it is all made of energy.
A non physical thing would be something like gravity which is a curvature in space time but something like light which creates a curvature in space time and possesses momentum should count as physical.

Anyway I asserted that you were saying electrons aren't physical by the fact that you talked about how they're important in memory formation after saying that memories are more than just a plainly physical thing.
>>
>>100501684
That's merely because of the way in which the person becomes an amnesiac.
Most amnesiacs are the result of an electrical imbalance of some sort within the brain or damage to part of cerebral cortex.
The only way to ensure complete amnesia wherein a person will also forget how to walk is to destroy their brain entirely however if you do that then their body will stop functioning.

It's the difference between ice and water vapor.

Yes, it's all the same molecule, but that doesn't prevent us from ascribing it different states.

And what I meant by memories being more than just a plainly physical thing was that the physical topology formed by our neurons are just as important as their voltages. That the only way a person can really 'die' is if that electrical activity ceases altogether.

And please, I don't want to talk about the definition of death or anything. I don't believe in an afterlife or anything mystical, we don't need to debate those points.
>>
>>100501988
Right, and so my point is that a person doesn't become an entirely new person when they get amnesia. It's the same person, just less memories.
>>
>>100502187
The physical topology and current of the brain both affect one another though.
Anyway I'll agree with you that the only way a body can die is for the electrical activity and chemical reactions to cease however if it's a matter of personal existence then then the memories are the most important part of a person and without them it is not the same person.
Still it seems like we're not going to agree on this so we should probably stop talking about it to make way for more database discussion.
This is /a/ and not /sci/.
>>
>>100502636
Granted,

The only point I'm making is that what makes you- you is your body. You can certainly damage your body, and forget your name and the like. But amnesia doesn't typically cause you to lose many of the memes that help you think and rationalize, nor does it destroy the body from which your personality arises.

In WoW:
Dungeon = 5 players
Raid = 10/25/40 players

>>100511497
solo->party->raid->world

in terms of number of players working together.
solo being one player, a party being a small group, a raid generally being several parties tied together with a rubber band, and then every fuckwit on the entire server combined for the really big ones.
>>
>>100511497
It's basically a dungeon that requires large numbers of players, beyond a normal party. The bosses are very strong, and usually full of monsters.

>>100511497
Raids are high-level encounters that are scaled for groups of more than the maximum part size (6) be it 10/20/30/40 etc. Typically Raids are perceived as End-Game content, since you require so many people of such a high level.

Term for how many players are involved in a certain quest/event. In Elder Tales:
Solo: 1 player
Party: 6 players
Full Raid: 4 Parties (24 players)
Legion Raid: 4 Full Raids (96 players)

Raiding the Goblin King is a Full Raid level battle, but this goblin army is at Legion Raid level.

Unlikely. Elder Tale Online was designed around a keyboard and mouse interface. Inhabiting the actual avatar of your character gives certain advantages, but it overall makes combat much harder. That's why we haven't seen much MMO stuff yet - people are avoiding combat since it's much more difficult.

The death in Elder Tale truly seems more terrifying than real life death.
In the latter, when you die, you die. But in the former, you get to live "forever" (is that confirmed?) losing memory by memory of your real-life time with each death.
Downright tragic, to say the least.
Granted, some of you would probably get rid of those memories, or most of them, right away. However, for most, that's indeed a scary experience.
I have no idea about you, but I would do as Crusty and try my best to git gud.
>>
>>100522377
I find it really silly when people say something like memory loss is scarier than death. Nothing is scarier than death. It's death. You're done. Do not pass Go, do not collect $200.

Judging from Crusty's experience, it's not like the memory loss is super traumatic. Just enough to make you uneasy. But you'll get over it. And eventually, yeah, maybe you'd die enough to forget your old life. But unless you were really shitty and dying very rapidly, you'd probably have a new life by then.
>>
>>100522555
Agreed, but I for one don't find the prospect of "being done" as terrifying as living an entire life by erasing my previous one, so to speak, with the added possibility of throwing the current one (Elder Tale) away and going back to real life with zero memories.
That being said, while I personally find ET's death scarier, in the (very) long term, they're both scary.
And yeah, just get good and you're set, there's no real burden there.
>>
>>100522657
>I for one don't find the prospect of "being done" as terrifying as living an entire life by erasing my previous one, so to speak
Why? Just think of it as a new life, if it bothers you that much. You're getting to live a new life instead of just one.
>>
>>100522555
Death isn't THAT scary, it's nothing, you experience nothing, that isn't scary, it isn't anything. Being un-born wasn't scary, and death will be the same.

The uncertainty of perpetual mind fuckery is a bit scarier to me.

Unless you hate life, death is worse than basically anything. People die when they are killed, you know.

>>
>>100522871
An immortal life of perpetual memory loss is more unnverving to be because of the uncertainty of it. Stumbling through time slowly but constantly forgetting everything over and over sounds scary.

Death, however, is a pretty certain deal. It'll be done, and that's that, and it's impossible for it to be truly unpleasant because you don't experience anything anymore.
>>
>>100522555
The issue is if you start to go bonkers like the goblins or whatever. Lose enough memories and you forget who you are and maybe lose your mind entirely turning into someone who runs around PKing for drops to get food.
>>
>>100522964
Death, however, is a pretty certain deal. It'll be done, and that's that, and it's impossible for it to be truly unpleasant because you don't experience anything anymore.
I find this to be a bit of a copout. No, you personally do not feel anything once you are dead. Saying it's not bad because of that is stupid all the same - you're dead. It's the end of your life and all that entails. You don't get to be happy or have fun or enjoy anything, ever. Like I said, unless you actually hate life, death is the worse thing that can happen. So long as you're alive and capable of being happy, it's much better to be alive.

>>100523041
This would be an actual problem, because it'd be just as bad as being dead, but I don't see any evidence of that yet.
>>
>>100522964
>you don't experience anything anymore.
But that's exactly the problem. Even if you reached a point where you've forgotten your past life (or lives), if you're alive, you still have a present and future, where you can experience things at all.

However, I can see the how it would be unnerving, since there would be an issue of whether you would still be you after all that.

Read Ship of Theseus by VM Straka.
>>
>>100523105
I don't think that the lack of being able to have any more happy experiences will be a problem because I won't be around to care. I don't see that as a cop out, it seems like an obvious truth to me.

Pleasant experiences tend to be more or less balanced out with bad ones anyhow, so I don't think that life is all that much better than death along the pleasure/pain criterion.

Not that I hate life, but I don't feel like it is inherently better than not-life. It's just what's going on right now, s'alright.

It could still happen, and it's only a logical step in constantly losing your memories.

Then again, we've only touched the issue of dying in battle. But what about those who only know how to die? Remember Serara?
It was heavily implied that she was--or was about to become--a plaything for those guys, and Demikas was more than willing to kill her. If you recall, the city was entirely under his command, so she would have no choice other than to die and go back to that Cathedral, then be abused by whatever means and die again.

I just think mentioning battle deaths only entail a specific percentage of all the actual deaths that could end up happening.

Throwing a curve ball out there, what about a yandere partner too?

>Discover you're thinking too much of real life and not paying attention to them
>Devise ways to kill you over and over again without appearing guilty
>Soon you lose your memories of real life and can only recall events starting from when you met them
Way out there, I know. But still.

And also, on another quick note, what about the teamwork Shiroe has with everyone else? Sure he knows them all, but he does so from the real world. Those are his memories, from time spent in real life playing Elder Tale, as an MMO. If he loses all of those, wouldn't he essentially lose all of his knowledge of the game--and most importantly (in my opinion), the bonds he formed with his close friends up until Apocalypse day?

LN vol.6

But this common knowledge is losing ground.

Even adventurers without the chef subclass is able to do simple seasoning or cut up the ingredients. They are able to make salads now.

Why is that so? They are not sure.

They don't know anything about the Apolcaypse in the first place, the meaning behind this change is also unclear.

The area of impact is easy to tell.

Even chef like Mikakage are unable to tell when this change came about. The Round table council discovered the restriction of crafting items in the early days. That's how the Round table council was founded in the first place.

Rod firm became a gathering of people with similar subclass because of this. Mikakage is surrounded by other chefs. Including Mikakage, all members have very high level. It is common knowledge that meals are made by the chef members of a guild or brought from other chefs.

That's why no one is sure when this change came about.

According to the survey of the gourmet department of Rod firm, about half the adventurers are able to make salads with decent chance of success. Even those who failed comments that it feels different from before.

They are able to affirm the phenomenon to be true.

But they are unable to tell whether this is the result of the unconscious effort put in by individuals, the increase in capabilities of adventurers, or the game restriction fading away. They also determined this is happening to the people of the land as well. Even the plant fairy Ellie can do it too.
>>
>>100532570
The frightening thing about this is that it is not only restricted to cooking.

For example, the constructor subclass focus on construction, while furniture are made by carpenters, these are fixed according to the rules of Elder Tales.

But after the presentation in the morning, other reports similar to Mikakage's department findings are starting to surface.

Construction and crafting are not techniques modern men are familiar with, unlike cooking, so there is a smaller sample size for them to go by. But from few cases that have been confirmed, there is enough experimental data to shake the foundation of the theories they have built to this day.

Mikakage is not the only one who is shaken.

Be it Aomori or other friends in the auditorium, all the members of Rod firm sense that they stumbled onto something big.

Everything is the need of editing. Disregarding the whole JP -> CH -> EN thing, it seems like the translation was done by someone who was native in the novel's written language, but intermediate at best in English. All translations, starting from Vol. 1, are in severe need of proofreading and editing. It's not so bad most of the time, however there were parts that were barely readable.
