Anyone else read Gate - Thus the JSDF Fought There! ? This manga is gold.
>>
>>100446652

No anon, the manga is moe. The currency of trade is moe.
>>
>>100448817
Can't it be golden moe?
>>
I don't get it.
This manga has everything that every single guy in this board likes, monter girls with big tits, normal girls with big tits, swords, dragons n shit, wizards, elves, lolis and still, it doesnt have the popularity that it should have.
Maybe when the anime comes out it'll be popular as shingeki no kyojin did.
>>
>>100450388
Yeah and it totally didn't have huge threads for it all the time when it was dumped here.
>>
>>100446652
It's good with the action but it's shit at the politics. It's ruined by the lens of NIPPON STRONG and Japanese cliche.
It's still good enough to read but I'm prettymuch reading for the adventure part. Listening to ancient people fawn over JAPANESE KATANA VERLY STRONG, what's his face bragging about having four seasons like that doesn't describe every country on the planet and other stuff would be hilarious if it wasn't so sad.

>>100450388
It petered out once the awful politics portions were shown and the translations have slowed down immensely. It's still popular but there's nothing to talk about for 2-3 months at a time as the backlog for translations likes to pileup.
>>
>>100450388
Translations. We don't have them often enough. Although I think we're caught up right now?
>>
>>100450632
I thought the politics sections were fine, the whole situation was so absurd as to be entertaining to me. It just feels like things have slown down since the brown elf girl was introduced, which is weird since it feels like the series is world building while I think it's actually nearing the end of the second volume of the light novel and gearing up to the finale.

NIPPON STRONG
>>
>>100450926
I guess... but it depends on which politics.
>They're black. They must be from the United states because that is the only place with black people!
The parts like that are just retarded even if how retarded they are is outright hilarious. It's like watching a person who believes everything on fox news try to make up a story about international and multidimensional politics set in our reality. It's just clearly not the manga's strong suit and this is after it was apparently censored from the excessive GRORIOUS NIPPON in the original novel.
It turns it from a "technology fuck yeah!" festival into something akin to a north korean tale of the most glorious and most bountiful leader. It gets hard to take seriously.

I do have to give some credit. the politics are fine inside the gate. it's when the politics with people from Earth that are stupid.
I seriously doubt anyone would let Japan have free reign in there without even some token oversight from UN sanctioned forces.
>>
>There's only one country with blacks in their military!

I enjoy it. But it's really, really obvious that modern Japan, as a society, doesn't know what war is like.

See, here's the plot:
>A first-world nation is attacked in their largest city
>They respond by invading a less-advanced country
>Their modern military quickly and easily defeats the conventional army of the less-advanced country
>They settle in with a big military base
>They feel super-proud of themselves for having modern technology and modern equality, and decide they're morally obligated to help out the primitives

Now, it's obvious what set of wars I'm talking about specifically. But it's a very old, very common pattern, and western nations know it well. Every time a more modern nation invades a primitive nation, full of pride and idealism, ready to give them the gift of proper modern technology and proper modern culture and proper modern clothing... it turns to shit. You get Zulu wars, you get Boxer Rebellions, you get Afghanistan (repeatedly,) you get the Conquistadors, you get Korea and Vietnam and Little Big Horn.

Japan was only a superpower for a few years, and they carefully keep the details of what happened during those years out of the textbooks. So, modern Japanese people don't understand what happens when you invade another country. It's sometimes right, it's sometimes necessary. But it's never happy and good. The locals do not look on your mighty weapons with awe and praise and worship you. They get pissed off, blame you for everything, and try to kill you with primitive weapons until you leave.

You guys have a good point, but still, if the story were narrated by other guy from a different country, the glorious country pride will be the same. Specially if it were by an u.s.a citizen.
The modern nation vs less advanced Japan has seems fine to me.
What you guys are complaining is all the "nippun stronk" thing i understand, i dislike patriotism, but the point there is how the big countries as USA, Russia, China would react with a new land to explote it natural resources.
A situation that would happen in real life, and it does.
>>
>>100452454
The funniest part is that the right wing bollocks were toned down according to the people who read the web and light novels iirc.
>>
>>100452454
It's just /a/ being stupid. I've seen other people explain it away using other examples like StarGate and how they hid the gate and later on gave countries limited access.

I just read it for the girls.

>modern Japan, as a society, doesn't know what war is like
It's not modern Japan, just this author. He also has no idea about global politics, how the appearance of an unknown phenomena would affect the world at large, or the effects of two separate universes interacting.

All access rights restricted to Japan only with no retaliatory embargoes?
JSDF having control over the interior for a solely military-political mission, with no scientific study?
Other nations acting first with covert strikes rather than espionage?
Interacting with a previously-separate world not unleashing a wave of illnesses as contagious cross the border?
Matter of another universe being 100% compatible with that of ours?

Pro-military nationalistic wank with a pretty coat.
>>
>>100451576

It's not just Gate, it's all over the place. Valkyria Chronicles, for example. Modern Japanese writing about war are like 14-year-old girls writing about sex and romance. It's an exciting idea for them, and they've seen some R-rated movies, and that's it.

There are American military comedies, like MASH. There are British military comedies, like Blackadder Goes Forth. They're light-hearted shows, but you can tell there's some memory, some reality there. The writers spent some time, if not soldiering themselves, then at least drinking with soldiers. But to modern Japanese, war is just a genre of movie, no more real than Starship Troopers.
>>
>>100452454
>Specially if it were by an u.s.a citizen
Hardly. Less than 10% of Americans think well of their country.
>>
>>100446652
It's pretty good.
It seems bullshit from a global politics perspective, but I assume anything with even remotely real-world political aspects is complete horseshit until proven otherwise (since I basically know jackshit about actual politics) so it doesn't really matter to me.
>>
>>100450388
In case your fanboyism blinds it, the manga became shit once politics became the focus and also how tryhard edgy the story became with demihuman cannibalism introduced and the author not even bothering to explain how humans can see demihumans being butchered alive or dying on the market and the only thing marking them as demi human at all is their ears or tails and without them, looks 100 percent human, yet somehow all the humans are fine with eating and buying body parts that could pass off as their own hands and legs.

What a hilarious made-up statistic. Sure, almost all Americans think their country isn't perfect. But they still think it's better than all those other countries. Which it is. Suck it.
>>
>>100451576
Actually the romans kinda are like WW2 Japan now that I think of it in that they are the ones that attacked and are being buttfucked by that decision while pretending they aren't losing and sending thousands of people to be slaughtered as soldiers in a fight they cant win.

>>100452454
It's not the stronk itself that's the problem. it's the baby nation thinking it's hot shit that comes off as silly which is why things are improving once they got back into the gate.

At least America has the excuse of the sheer ridiculousness of their military compared to the rest of the planet combined.
I guess some of it can be explained as different characters having their own agendas but with no actual written words any theories are just that.(such as the fact that when trying to scare the Romans they didn't point out that they aren't even considered to be the best military force and they're stuck using the weaker weapons you can find on Earth)
And cmon. we all groan when a form of media sucks off the US military. (The US also basically pays them to do that too so it's actual propaganda. going along with it saves you tens of millions of dollars and lets you use the new toys for filming)

>>100452851
The author was in JDSF. I figured i should toss that out there. Japan also apparently has a bit of an inferiority complex when it comes to empires while simultaneously not realizing they aren't worth making.

Yeah, which is why he's spot-on about equipment and minutia, but doesn't know what it's like to be in a war. There are some brave people in the JSDF. But the JSDF doesn't do a lot of war fighting; it is, in fact, constitutionally prohibited from doing so.
>>
>>100453624
>constitutionally prohibited from doing so
Humorously, for the very reasons that the manga portrays; the sentiment that war is acceptable because success in combat is the most praiseworthy action in society. Sengoku romanticism is hard to shake with a country so rooted in preserving the past.

...Wow, are you confused. Of course we hate our politicians. All right-thinking people hate politicians. But our country is awesome.

British people love their country and hate the weather, Indians love their country and hate the bureaucracy, Japanese love their country and hate the immigrants who keep it running, and Americans love their country and hate their politicians. But Americans love more and hate more because America is best.
>>
>>100453806

They're so embarrassed and insulted about the pacifist constitution we forced on them. Well, assholes, teach WWII in schools.

Seriously, all the big-boy nations have some atrocities in their past, they teach them to schoolchildren so they never fuck up that bad again. We teach our kids that we killed all the indians and enslaved a bunch of black people, and we should remember those mistakes and never do anything like that. Germany teaches the holocaust, Great Britain teaches the shit they got up to in colonial days. Until you acknowledge that you fucked up, with the mass organized rape and the pits full of corpses and the slave camps, you are not responsible enough to have a big-boy military.
>>
>>100453838
As far as foreign sentiment is concerned. Nobody says, "America's government approved so-and-so despite majority disapproval from the American public", it's always American government as America.
>>
>>100454241
>As far as foreign sentiment is concerned

But what we were talking about was how Americans see America.
>>
>>100450632
What is so wrong japanese show patriotism in something they write? Its not like that the author is making this for the international audience. He was was aiming ofr the japanese audience. Why would you write that other country is stronger if you were aiming for japanese audience. In japanese media USA is always the most evil there is. Lastly, you only take offence to this because you think that America is the best country of all even with all the racism, shootings, raping and the fucked up justice system that exist in the country.
>>
>>100454519
And government is an integral part of any country. "General sentiment" is a laughably vague idea, and any data would be ignored in favor of popular impression and anecdotal knowledge.

>>100454705

Love everything about it. Chapter 33 fucking when?
>>
>>100454241
To be fair nearly everyone around the world likes american ideals of equality, freedom of speech etc and etc. What they don't like is the shit that America actually does as well as the government leaders which is very related.Mass torture programs, wars everywhere, hope you dont have a natural resource they want while not already being under their control, wars on drugs, racism etc.
>>100454705
What makes you think I shit eagle feathers?
And really Japanese nationalism is pretty creepy when you consider that they still don't acknowledge that anything they did was wrong in WWII.

It's just as eye rolling when america does it as any other country and they actually have the excuse in non sci fi movies of having a huge military industrial complex that's been at war for decades on end.
>>
>>100454821

Ok. You said 10% of Americans have a favorable view of America, based on a statistic that 10% of Americans have a favorable view of Congress. You used statistics wrong.

I say most Americans love America, based on a statistic that 80% of Americans agree with the statement "America is the greatest country in the world."

http://www.gallup.com/poll/145358/americans-exceptional-doubt-obama.aspx

Moving on now.
>>
>>100455050
>the shit that America actually does
And this is the point I was making in that post: you're treating the American government as representing all of America. Torture, war, anti-drug, surveillance, and so forth are extremely unpopular within America - arguably moreso than without, as the persistence of such policies highlights the institutional legacy of corruption. State and more local governments are increasingly shirking federal laws. The American public doesn't like the way their government acts, non-Americans don't like the way the American government acts, but non-Americans tend to treat the American government and public as one and the same.
>>
Anyone who's read the novels know if they ever get into the magic stuff at all?

I mean, you meet this other culture that has people who can warp the laws of physics, I'd think you'd send some scientists and students to try to learn their shit. And science and magic do work together nicely; the mage girl has gotten more powerful since she learned some basic chemistry.
