Is Legend of the Galactic Heroes actually good or does /a/ merely worship it to gain weeaboo cred for enjoying "the golden age of anime"? After watching tons of over the top stuff I feel like trying a more "serious" show, but the last /a/-approved 80s 'classic' I tried (Gunbuster lawl) turned out to be pretty mediocre.
I tried to watch it but got bored easily. I'm sure it's a great show, though.
It's my favorite animu of all time.
watch it bitch
It's genuinely good. /a/ hardly "worships" it. it is not brought up that often.
One more thing: I have nothing against old anime. I still watch Lupin III regularly and enjoy every minute of it, but some of /a/'s favorite "classic" shows have actually aged horribly and weren't all that revolutionary to begin with.
Whenever someone brings it up, it gets nothing but praise
I'll give it a try. Is it something you're supposed to speedrun through (there's about 20 years worth of episodes to catch up after all) or should I download it at a slower pace?
Fuck you, GaoGaiGar is awesome. It doesn't bring anything new to the table but it's pretty damn good for a children's cartoon based on a toy series. Plus, Mic Sounders the 13th is the best animu robot ever.
It's a fairly slow-paced political drama with some excellent battle scenes
Definitely give it a try, I was hooked real fast and ended up burning through 70 episodes in about 2 weeks
It's not good.
Read the post I quoted.
'some of /a/'s favorite "classic" shows have actually aged horribly and weren't all that revolutionary to begin with.'
It was good, but in my opinion it was a tad bit too long. Also, NOBODY DIES IN GaoGaiGar (except for Guy's father, ofcourse)
If space opera is your thing then it's one of the best.
>>Is Legend of the Galactic Heroes actually good or does /a/ merely worship it to gain weeaboo cred for enjoying "the golden age of anime"?
Yes, it's great.
And yes I'm with you; gunbuster was shit.
LoGH is amazing if you skip the first and last season. Of course, then you won't know what the hell is going on, why anything is happening or what happens to anyone, but that's not always a bad thing.
It's slow as fuck and hardly for everyone. A battle is coming up and the commanders are planning out their strategy. You can skip two episodes, and they can STILL be planning it out. If you find yourself bored to death by it, I won't blame you or say you have ADD. Shit's impossible to marathon.
However, if you can stand the kinds of shows like Monster or Maison Ikkoku and can take them in little bits and pieces, then yes, I would wholeheartedly recommend the thing. Legend of the Galactic Heroes is an epic that is extremely rare in anime and in my opinion is one of the best things to come out of the medium.
If it's good /a/ will begin trolling it soon.
>NOBODY DIES IN GaoGaiGar
That's sort of the whole point. It was a silly, sometimes ridiculously optimistic series released in the middle of the whole Eva craze when everyone was trying to make DEEP and dark shit
Downloading LOTGH's episode 1 nao. Is the animation decent or should I expect tons of QUALITY shots? It's a 110-episode 80s-90s series after all.
Effortless "LotGH sux" trolling can be easily ignored, but if someone actually takes the effort to sit through the show in order to troll it, I would have far too much respect for someone so dedicated to lash out at him...
Actually, maybe I would bite out of sheer admiration.
I agree that it's nice to have something optimistic every once in a while, but if they're not going to kill of at least one character they shouldn't make it always look like everybody except Guy\Mamoru or J\Arma has died.
Yes, LotGH was good, and yes, /a/ worships it to gain weeaboo cred.
It's an OVA series, meaning higher than TV budget. Animation is consistent and good.
It's a sleep hit here, but the fans that praise it do worship it.
>gunbuster was shit.
LOGH is worth watching, just don't try to marathon it.
I had cancer. Then I watched LoGH, and it was gone!
There will be good times, and there will be sad times.
Especially if you like space operas.
Only one troll will actually watch the whole thing, everyone else will just bash it based on the first troll's tl;dr copypastas.
I unintentionally created a few anti-Gunbuster copypastas, which is pretty retarded since I didn't watch the show just so I could troll it. I honestly expected the most epic shit ever and ended up being disappointed.
I'm ashamed to admit that I usually agree with Cirno's opinions, so I might just enjoy this.
I love how faggots on /a/ don't bother to read the posts they reply to.
> I usually agree with Cirno's opinions
he likes Mind Game so his tastes are at least decent
That's a good example of why his opinions are worthless actually. Overrated shit, is shit.
LotGH is Marimite for men.
He actually has better taste than most f/a/gs. Other than GL.
Legend of the Galactic Heroes is Marimite for men.
Marimite is Marimite for men.
One of the most creative achivements of all time in the animated medium is overrated?
Why? Because you dont like it? Get off 4chan, child.
I lol'd because it is true.
That really doesn't say much.
How exactly is Mindgame overrated?
Marimite is the epitome of manly.
It's long as hell, don't marathon it, and don't expect a masterpiece.
It is good though.
[MASTEROFTHEOBVIOUS]Mindgame is overrated because it didn't meet the expectations >>10044641 had after he listened to the hype. Of course, everything is overrated to someone.[/MASTEROFTHEOBVIOUS]
Like anything which is overrated, it lacks the merits to deserve the praise and popularity it receives.
Mind Game wasn't THE MOST IMPRESSIVE AND EMOTIONAL ACHIEVEMENT ON THE ANIMATED MEDIUM or whatever the shit, but it was still incredibly awesome. A lot of its fans are really pretentious and obnoxious, but why would you let fans ruin a good animu for you?
If mindgame lacks the merits worthy of praise, then no anme deserves praise. Period.
Seriously, what the fuck are you judging it by? Because it certainly is not animation and writing.
>If mindgame lacks the merits worthy of praise, then no cartoon, regardless of its country of origin, deserves praise. Period.
>Seriously, what the fuck are you judging it by? Because it certainly is not animation and writing.
He's either a moeblob fag, a troll or a realismfag who hates everything that's cartoony and stylized. Possibly all three.
I didn't say it was total shit, I said it didn't deserve the praise it receives, like faggots claiming that it's the greatest animation ever, like you just did.
Funny thing with this show is that I downloaded it because of recommendations (well first 50 eps anyway)and starter watching it at my 37' lcd tv. Thing is that even without any kind of scaling, I cant fucking watch more then two eps in row or else I'm getting huge headache. Clear sign from higher power to not marathon this one. Good serie anyway.
Actually, I agree. It was good but people are seriously overhyping it.
Also it's becoming the new Cowboy Bebop, AKA you'll be hearing tons of fags saying "Anime is for fucking child raping niggers with no taste BUT I LOVE MIND GAME IT'S THE ONLY GOOD ONE EVER CREATED"
I marathon LoGH, its very good but starts to fall apart around the 3rd "OVA season" but never goes into full collapse.
Why the fuck are there so many fucking OVAs anyways? If they're going to make that many why not make it a TV series instead?
So they can lol at otakus that actually own 110 videos. Same reason why Gainax never released FLCL on a single DVD.
That and the studio can animate the little monster at its own pace with the OVA format, so it makes the whole thing less likely to delve into QUALITY and reused cels like it probably would had LotGH been a TV series.
Favourite Anime EVER
It's not good it's AWESOME
And EPIC in the true and classical meaning of the word.
I can't imagine LoGH being as profitable as it would have been as a TV series.
FLCL actually makes sense on multiple discs because:
A: It's fairly short
B: It has high production values
C: That's the standard in Japan
I guess that make some sense. Not good business sense, but I guess that's cool.
I'm guessing it wasn't that successful that way seeing as I don't know of anything else that worked out similarly.
Conquest of the universe was the most exciting part. Administrating it is a bitch.
It started to fall apart with the "conquest" because ... well what else was there to be done?
By keep going they had to make stuff up and I had troubles accepting the "Earth Cult" serious after what happened on Earth (they gone to masterminds to complete idiots) and they pretty much have written themselves into a corner after that ... lets say I really did not enjoyed the "death count" of the end (since it served no fucking purpose) and even less the "illness" that come from the left field AND it was a coop out.
Episode 1 was fairly epic
...wait, this has shota yaoi? god dammit
Still my favourite show of all time.
How closely did it follow the novels anyway?
It's not a bad series but the ending was too rushed. Could do with another 20-30 episodes.
Started watching it just recently myself due to 4chan hype. I'm only a few episodes in but I truly enjoy it due to the style of space combat being the sort that I like -- vaguely hard sci-fi with giant fleets, lengthy timescale, longrange beamspam with fighters and no dipshit humanoid giant robots in sight (Pretty sad when the last anime I watched that had ships I liked were Blue Drop and fucking Haruhi) -- and the treatment of the non-combat aspect of both sides of the conflict. I can see it getting slow over a hundred episodes but for now it's great.
And it looks good -- I got VOTOMS next to it after being promised "real robots in a real robot setting" but it was all the same mecha crap as usual (right down to the cliches that Eva killed and everyone wants to bring back) in a Mad Max setting and frankly it didn't age well.
