everytime i go to my local book stores or comic shop the manga section seems to grow like some kind of tumor. pushing hard working american authors and illisrators off of book shelves. i really really have tried reading it. the backwards format doesnt bother me.

but why is it so wanted?

how many homo erotic femine heroes can you all really stomach? how many 14 year old girls can save the world before you get sick of it?

WHAT IS THE BIG DEAL
>>
Not all anime/mango is about children saving the world.

modern american fiction these days is either romance novels or "Sally Parkwurst was a hairdresser who got raped by a dog. After the horrific incident, she sits at the park drinking tea and reminiscing about where her life went wrong. Also her husband's an asshole"

If American authors sucked less it would be fine.

As you can see, American authors are switching to manga style - it's detestable, but it works.

That was a fucking awesome book.

good shit like that and On Beauty are few and far between

It's okay when there's actually GOOD series, but when at half of them are obscure shouji shit and the other half Naruto, One Piece and Bleach, it gets fucking annoying.

Also, fuck English novels. I'm unleashing my inner weeaboo now.

i was speaking of american comics. of which i have never seen a storyline similar to your statement

I hardly think you can compare your average manga with any professionally written novel. The OP wasn't talking about literature. He was talking about American and English etc comic books

you're right. Manga usually have better endings

simply because these manga stories are pop cultural turds plopped out to satisfy the urges of self hating cultures white teenagers

whereas most novels are ennui-filled turds plopped out to satisfy the urges of depressed middle-aged women.

And I don't know who the fuck would want to read most sci-fi, aside from those with an exposition fetish.

OP here. I'm not trolling. I really want to understand peoples compulsion towards this stuff.

I've read akira, all of a series called Chobits and several other series.

I also watch lots of anime, which i'm not talking about in this post.

i just dont see why people are like OMFG MANGA FUCK FUCK FUCK MUST DEVOTE LIFE

I read novels, play console games, watch TV, do archery, go to the cinema, etc.

I'm not devoting my life to manga, but it's a nice media.
>>
>>10043888

if every reader was like you though. the manga section at Barnes and noble here wouldn't be fuckin 8 shelves wide.

compared to the 1 shelf for comics.

6 for fantasy/scifi

for regular fiction 5 shelves

romance 7

the manga section is bigger than any thing else in the entire store
>>
>>10043888

I just can't get into the new authors and books they churn out. All seem like shit to me. I'll stick to my classic literature.
>>
>>10043862
It's different yet familiar so young teens feel as if they are being more individual than if they read American comics.
As for your original post, we both know manga is just as varied as American comics.
>>
>>10043912

this is a good thing.
>>
>>10043912
except for the huge children section which is 1/3 of the store in some borders/barnes and nobles. 80% of the manga in the comics section could go there in my opinion.
>>
>>10043970
from what i've seen of American comics, which, admittedly isnt much, manga seems to cover a far larger gambit of genres on average than manga.
outside of going to a store that specializes in comic books i have yet to find a place that sells comcis in anything less than a 30:1 ratio of SUPERHERO FUCK YEAH to every other genre combined.

You're a tard if you think Japan is somehow any different in terms of originality and content.

I could count the manga in my country's main bookstores on one hand.

Naruto
Bleach
Death Note
Nana
Detective Conan
20th Century Boys
Say Hello to Black Jack
Yu-Gi-Oh
Volume 3 of DN-Angel
Volume 1 of Battle Angel Alita
Volume 1 of Berserk

I was born with an extra finger. Big whoop, wanna fight about it?

OP here. i believe i did mention comic shops in my original post.

and i am not retarded. i'm simply saying that the boom going in the industry that produces manga title causes unoriginal things to be produced. same thing happened in the late 90's with the boom in comic sales

This explains EVERYTHING

I work at Barnes and Noble.

The reason why the manga section is four bookcases and comic are 1.5 shelves is that American Comics are usually Marvel and DC Superhero titles, with the remaining being things like IDW, Dark Horse, and Vertigo, which are the only real companies that do ORIGINAL stories, which is something manga does a lot more often.

Japan has the room to be creative like that, too. Marvel is never going to make something like Genshiken or Death Note. Remember the 90's? The American Comics industry almost DIED COMPLETELY, the industry was saved by Hollywood superhero movies.

Manga did not have this lowpoint in its history. That's why more manga exists. Sure, you got kids reading DBZ, Bleach, One Piece, etc. But people like myself read GITS, Battle Angel Alita, just seinen and shounen in general, because they are something I couldn't get in America.

Maybe this has clarified things.
>>
>>10044219
most titles of any popular medium will be unoriginal crap trying to be the next big hit. Do some research on what you want rather then just buying randomly off the shelf. Almost all book stores will order you anything you want if it's in print, or will ship it to you, usually with free shipping, if you buy from their online store.
>>
>>10044219
We need more literary fiction.

I will start the new wave of it. Screenshot this post. My novel will be critically acclaimed, and will be one of the greatest books ever written. You will know it's me because I will write "Cirno" in the pages before the table of contents.
>>
>>10043627
Its not a big deal, only you are making it a big deal since western bookstores are gradually making a bit more room for manga.

Note that mango books comes in series of books which is why it would require more space than the one novel. When I look at a manga section of a store even though there is 4-5 shelves catering for it, there is only like 10-20 different series. Compare to 1 shelf carrying 50 different novels.

There is no big deal, just you going OMG 8 shelves of mango!!! and then you see 1 shelf is bleach, another naruto, and yu gi oh + one piece on another and the rest of the shelves stuffed with shoujo like fruit basktets etc.
>>
>>10044134
i never said anything to the affect of all US comics being bad. only that normal bookstores tend to stock comcis less diversely than manga.
>>
>>10044173

Well, it's nothing eugenics can't fix.

LOLWUT this already happens in Japan, and what industry are you talking about? Western manga industry? Cause from the top of my head the only businesses they deal with is like translating stuff from Japan 1-2 years back into English releases.
>>
>>10043912
Isn't that actually do to the oversaturation of the manga market by Tokyopop, ADV, Viz and those other companies? I overheard these two Borders employees talkng about these huge stacks of manga above the history section of the store. Apparently they were all the rage a couple years ago and people bought any old series because it was Z0MG SUGOI but now sales have decreased.

Oh a related note I really hate those fucking teenagers and little kids who read manga in the middle of the fucking isle. They fucking block my view of any titles I might be looking for and they mess up the pages after they're through. I don't know why store employees don't kick them out.

So the manga pushed the comics down to one shelf? As if before manga came along, bookstores had multiple huge shelves of American comics?
>>
>>10044502
They didn't
>>
A larger section means that there is more variety, and that the genre is becoming more popular. It's not like there are people who buy from every single series on the shelves, thus making them "devoted". You can't know how intense one's interest is unless you actually see what they've collected over the years, etc.
