Why is still almost no one watching this?
It might not be the best show this season, but it's certainly the most underappreciated one.
And it definitely has the best protagonist this season.
Some of the humour might be hit or miss, but it's one of the most consistently high quality shows this season otherwise.
You must be at least this Japanese to ride this ride.
I do like how it started off superior nippon and then fell apart into just being culture shock.
Worst Satan design in a long time though. Where's my bat demon gargoyle monster with three heads and six wings?
It's pretty much the "you must be at least *this* japanese to enjoy it", so most people won't get the jokes, or not bother with it in first place, even if mildly interested.
I'm watching it. I hate not getting some of what I think are jokes tho.
The MC's brand of humor involves hitting people when they do something silly or stupid.
It's violent gag humor, and likely to only be appreciated by people who not only bizarrely think the Three Stooges were funny, but that they were the apex of comedy.
satan sama was wo moe he literally made the channel crash.
So it's Joshiraku again?
The only threads for this show are about people complaining that no ones watching this
Joshiraku in hell
I would say the second episode works better for Western audiences, especially when Satan pops up. But I agree, underappreciated dry comedy about how banal even hell can become in time. Plus Animal Cruelty Hell is very therapeutic to see.
Is there a sub group that puts out TL notes for this?
>You must be at least this Japanese to ride this ride.
...but that's complete bullshit unless you think shit like Momotaro is something that only Japanese are familiar with. If you've been watching anime for a couple years you should be familiar with all the mythological aspects that make up the setting, and the jokes that require contemporary Japanese knowledge are maybe on in ten if that.
Hell, the second episode was almost completely accessible even to people completely unfamiliar with Japanese culture.
Something like Joshiraku requires several orders of magnitude more cultural knowledge, but this is barely above entry level.
> he thinks we're talking about Momotaro
Way to prove you're not at least -this- Japanese.
>Momotaro is something that only Japanese are familiar with.
I know you're not, but the culturally unique shit will make an average person miss maybe 10% of the jokes at most.
Fuck, man, I dunno, I went on a school trip to see a play about Momotaro in elementary school. I live in Eastern Europe.
But its international popularity aside, at least everyone on /a/ should be familiar with this level of folklore, and that doesn't really leave much left to understand.
I'd never heard of him till a week before, when I was watching the Smile Precure movie
>Using HorribleSubs for this show
What the hell, anon. Can't you just wait for FFF?
And no you're wrong, this IS the best show of Winter. I guess it just show how awful weak this season is going.
I find it somewhat lacking. The premise and characters seem cool but the jokes tend to be more miss than hit.
Because it's boring with shitty jokes
Watched the first episode, the only thing I liked was the OP, it was pretty catchy.
>Gags that only a Japanese would understand
It's basically Joshiraku without the cute girls. Let's be honest what's the point watching this shit without the cute girls?
>Gags that only a Japanese would understand
>Satan's "Oh My god!"
THIS IS IT, THE BEST OH MY GOD IN ANIME
Boring. Done to death by others and with better humor and characters/
a lot of KLK watcher follow this.
just becouse it's aired 30m before KLK.
it isn't so bad.
its newfags, dont mind. There is like 100 shows retellign momotarou tale starting with Urutsei Yatsura and most recently i remember Sasami.
Its like people complaining RDG is too complex to them since deal with japanese religious stuff
Fucking love this show. Actually found the Satan segment a tad boring, but I'm honestly not having much trouble with the humour or references. I'm a Gintama fan though, so maybe that's why I'm not so bothered.
If you were watching that, you must have at least gotten the demons wear tiger loincloths thing, right?
>scared of a bunch of Jap demons
this anime is shit
Oh yeah, that's pretty common.
knowing about the retale isn't the same as being familiar with the actual myth. You actually literally believe people who watched dragon balls are expert about the journey to the East?
>thinks the Christian Satan is a strong superdemon who can challenge God
He's a tiny powerless motherfucker who can only trick and influence people with words.
OP, I don't watch it because I'm already reading the manga, and the manga is always better.
How many here have seen Starblazers? More people have seen the original Yamato and even more 2199.
I actually find Gintama a lot more difficult to understand. If it wasn't for the translator notes, I'd lose like half or more of the references. But I don't see that much people complaining about it. The universal toilet humor might make up for it.
Looks like to me that a lot of anons decided that they wouldn't understand Hoozuki before it aired.
The adaptation is quite good, I enjoy it, even if the manga is still better.
What's the point of recognizing a reference if you don't understand it?
It's Seinen Jidaigeki fiction/mythology with humor and dialogue aimed directly at Japanese men in their 30s
I of course love it
But this is a board for little girls, OP
Jidaigeki is an elite club, we welcome you
That's Strange+, which is actually pretty funny. Open fujos write some pretty good manga, when they're the artists
Why is it period drama?
The OP is hilarious, especially if you understand that it's a parody of another song, and that they're using an intentionally terrible series of puns (Jigoku wa Jimoku - Hell is fantastic).
to be fair, if you take the biblical version of it, literally no one can step to YHVH
Strange+ is shoujoshit, it's serialized in Zero-Sum.
It's period mythology, i.e. it's humorous fiction set in that era.
Demographics show that the average buyer of the individual volumes is an adult woman, i.e. Josei
Numerous topical pages refer to the genre as Josei although some of the material is Shoujo
I find it really boring, I just want to skip through the episode.
Parody of another song?
>It has been serialized in Ichijinsha's Josei manga magazine Monthly Comic Zero Sum since the magazine's first issue in March 2002
So what, Haikyuu, Kurobas and Gintama are shoujo now?
Learning something new? Curiosity? Being able to appreciate something after understanding it?
I don't know a single bit of moon, but if you explain me how a good pun works, I can appreciate it, even if it won't make me laugh out loud. Same for references to myths. It's always nice to learn abot folklore, or even modern references (they're often less interesting and/or harder to understand though).
>how awful weak this season is going
I'm watching a lot of stuff this season, especially if I'm allowed to count stuff continuing from fall. I think this is actually a pretty nice season all things considered.
I AM SHOCK!
>Being able to appreciate something after understanding it?
I'm pretty glad for having watched the Batsu Games despite not getting most of the stuff they do. But I've still been able to pick up a lot of stuff for comedy anime thanks to it.
>Gintama makes a Matsuko Deluxe reference
>Finally, I understand
I like it but there's not much to say about it. I get most of the jokes and references but then again I've been watching anime and japanese shit for 15 years now. Still, it's not like Momotarou is so obscure you cant google him to find out what he's about.
Typical ridiculous european competition.
Dropped it yesterday. I can't sympathize with the characters. The humour is the tired traditional slapstick mixed with jigoku folklore that doesn't really appeal to me enough to be aware of enough jokes to justify keeping up with this in the hopes of laughing twice per episode.
Every part of it is a parody, down to the title of the song (Jigoku no Sata mo Kimi Shidai) which is a parody of Jigoku no Sata mo Yome Shidai.
But Joshiraku was great.
Admittedly, the song itself sounds familiar to something but I can't pick it.
Look at what the actual J-residents are saying about it and it should tell you that they're laughing their asses off
I watch it, it's one show that I probably won't drop all the way till the end.
