Yamakan's Wake Up Girls movie is officially the lowest grossing movie based off a TV anime ever made, making only 10 million yen at the box office. By comparison, the previous worst rated movie was the Sora no Otoshimono movie which generated just over 100 million.

Don't worry, sales will pick up just like the anime WUG's did.
>>
>>100331629
Well, to be fair, the Sora no Otoshimono movie was a recap the most part, they're doing a 2nd one anyway. But I don't think Yamakan has the money to try a 2nd movie.

So when is he going to retire for real?

How many theaters was it in? That's the only thing that matters. It was more like a promotional screening, nobody expected it to do well in box office. Home video is where it's at, and it's doing ok so far.

Can Yamakan outflop Tianhe-2?
>>
Average anime BD costs around 7,300~6,100
10,000,000 / 6,100 = 1,639

Equivalent of selling 1,639 copies, but most anime is discounted 20% to around 5,100 yen so that makes it the equivalent of 1,961 copies sold.
>>
It's okay, there's always KyoAni for you normal fags, not everyone can enjoy god-tier anime, a set percentage of society is genetically defective, and they're drawn to Naruto, Chuu2 and other similar materials

The "film" (it's not really a film because it has the budget of two anime episodes) is almost on top of preorders in amazon. It's even above chuu2. The screening was promotional, airing only on a couple of theaters. Stop manipulating, fags, and enjoy salvation.

What can I say?

I always thought it was a bad idea going for so much in a single push without a developed fanbase.

For comparison, Pretty Rhythm is only producing a movie after 3 successful franchises.

The Idolm@ster game was released in 2005 and the movie was only announced in 2013 after a successful anime series (2 if you count that Jukki Hanada mecha series)

Well, now we know the measuring stick.

It's up to the Idolm@ster Movie to come down on Yamakan like a ton of bricks leaving his half-dead body for Aikatsu to kick until death.

Go Team Lantis!
>>
>>100335009
It made about ~$65 million USD in theaters.
>>
This is called generating buzz, people.
The movie will break even after BD sales.
Even more people will know about the series and the WUG group.
Yamakan is clearly a genius at budget marketing.
I wouldn't be surprised if he submitted WUG for the next Sundance for Western exposure.
>>
>>100337818
I'd rather see a success than failure but I can't see it happening with how many issues they are running into. And given the fact that most of the stuff Yamakan has done lately hasn't done well under normal circumstances I'm not optimistic. It be nice to see someone who cares succeed, we already have enough trainwrecks, but the logical part of me refuses to think that will happen.

>>100337839
It would be interesting, but I doubt it would produce god results. But maybe they could get clever and go shaftlike with still frames and such.
>>
>>100337863
>displayed only in 13 theaters for 4 days

It's average, not bad at all. I agree that he could have settled with a movie directly for BD-DVD. The preorders for the movie right now are excellent and the popularity is skyrocketing. I understand you all want yamakan to fail, but be fair and analyse all the data properly.

It has however very big merchandize campaign, in Sendai especially, and has Mobage and actual Idol band to promote.

Overall, very ambitious project that at least so far seems to generate enougth interest to be mentioned on mainstream TV, be most discussed anime on 2ch and 2chan and Movie BD selling well.

Overall though, the the strategy seems long term profits from band/merch rather than immidiate profits from anime BDs/cinema. Since resources put into advertisement and merch would never be paid off with that.

(**1,062 pt) at a price nearly half of a regular anime volume. It's not well. It's not even average for a movie. If this doesn't improve drastically, seeing it combined with the lackluster box office performance, it can even be considered a near flop. I won't call it that, yet. ITT: Retards

The movie wasn't meant to make money. Yamakan didn't expect it to make money. Ordet didn't expect it to make money. You must be a literal retard if you expected a movie for an upcoming late-night anime with no pre-established fanbase would sell anything.

If their business plan was to produce a movie and show it in theaters to 'generate buzz' it was a horrible idea.
1. They were already promoting the series with events
2. The little profit you make from screenings will have to be divided with the distributor and the cinemas.

It's not like it costs terribly much money considering KLK episode 3, SnK episode 25 and more all had screenings in theaters too. You guys are making it out to be bigger than it is. And the WUG movie is less of a movie and more of a glorified episode 1 & 2.

It did generate buzz because 2ch can't stop talking about it. Not only that but the movie gave the series a strong start since we already have 3 episodes worth of content and kinda know what show we're dealing with.

What else can they do when they can't finish an episode in time? Take a break of two or three weeks to get back into schedule? What will the TV station do in such a case, just air commercials in that slot? And what about shows that were scheduled in that slot after the WUG finish date, everything would get pushed back a few weeks.
Yamakan's saving is out of control!

If so, it was a retarded move to release it simultaneously. Not only did it confuse people, it also led to rushed parts in the show for which Yamakan had to apologize, and now he even has to beg for animators to come and help his studio out because they are helplessly behind schedule.

Latest Yamakan tweet:

チクショウ!

God damnit!

What does he mean?
>>

I wish Yamakan tried harder.

He's a capable manager but a joke as director

Probably that another animator has quit and he keeps getting turned down by all the others he asks. He must be in a real pinchu if he publicly asks for animators.

Quit on what project? WuG?
>>

Wait, why are animators quiting when the show is airing?

A person working on WUG tweeted how they are still only finished ep3.
>Tonight after the business meeting, me and a planning assistant guy made a little closing party in the noodles shop near the studio. It's still only episode 3. Our battle continues.
>>
>>100371158
This show needs to get it's shit together.

Still WUG and all this drama is still damn interesting to watch.
>>
>>100371158

Can anyone explain what happen?

I want to know all the drama as to why they fucked up so hard.
>>
Can we even really count it as a theatrical release since it was streamed online worldwide within a day or two after it aired and precedes the show itself?

Thanks anon.

So since when did most animators in the industry hate Yamakan?
>>
>>100372338
Pretty sure the rumors on the people quiting are just fake drama. Or if they do it would be because the shitty work they are having.
They just did bad moves and now they are short of time.

I see.

Well, guess we will know what's up when it's time for the next episode then.

Yeah, it makes sense. Especially when EoE was not released.

What doesn't make sense is how Gainax turns around as sell Death & Rebirth DVD/BD/Whatever at full price, when the complete EoE movie has been released.

I'm still fucking pissed back when I brought 2 movies back home, only to find that D&R is half recap and half EoE, which I also already brought.

Oh god guys stop, my lifetime spent around Hollywood studios is making me automatically try to run P&A numbers and shit on this and then I realize I know nothing about the Japanese market.

Anybody more moonspeak-savvy capable of scrounging up the first week vs second week screen numbers? That's usually the best way to tell how a movie's actually doing.

exact
same
fucking
thing
Wake up, Girls! is his own idol group and he is already treating them as such. Baiting BD siles with real life idol shows—such a criticasl deconstruction of the idolshit genre!
>>
>>100334219
The problem is, Kon's Perfect Blue explored the darker side of idols already. If Yamakan wants to make something about idols that is interesting, why not lampshade the sameface in WUG by having the girls actually be genetically modified clones of that one ex-idol in the series? They could have had the old hag run off when she started getting blackmailed by her secret mad-scientist partner, leaving the girls in tears as they discover the awful truth.

Yamakan does not dislike Idol bussiness though. And here his point of view:

>bay|NDK|Yamakan> And the one path that anime has been avoiding is to look at reality face on
<bay|NDK|Yamakan> For example, in the live action genre, this genre has been bold in confronting reality. There have been plenty of movies about vietman and i'm sure there will be lots of about 9/11
<bay|NDK|Yamakan> And for japanese live action, there was a lot of live action movies about (missed)
<bay|NDK|Yamakan> (zenkyoto?)
<bay|NDK|Yamakan> And you can say that anime may have been avoiding confrontation with reality, but for something that's supposed to be representative of popculuture, it's lacking
18:19:00 <bay|NDK|Yamakan> And this would be a long story to tell, but if you look at the history of japanese animtion, it's not that long, it's a relatively young genre, and if you look at the oldest one.. but it only goes back to 100 years ago(missed?), and the first feature length is the legend of the white snake which was made 50 years ago
<bay|NDK|Yamakan> so you can say the history of japanes animation goes back 50 years
>>
>>100398285
ay|NDK|Yamakan> And the history of japanese animation only started after the war in the pacific, after it was after, and it's post dated after the zenkyoto student movement, sothe japanese animation hasn't been in existsence with a large social movement, it's always been a peaceful existence.
<bay|NDK|Yamakan> So as a result. It's been nuturing an enviroment where it's been free to be diverse (para)
<bay|NDK|Yamakan> But just as all other forms of art, such as music have done, confronting reality, i think it's time for the genre for japanese animation has come to a turning point, and i think it has to do that, i think just as it was coming to that point to maturity, the great earthquake happened this yea
