Why did they bother writing in Hikaru if all she was there for was slight comic relief and to get screwed over in a terrible cruel way? I liked Madoka better and I still think Hikaru should've won.

There would be no series without Hikaru.

I don't know man, Kyosuke was a enough of a moron to keep it going, the magic part wasn't explained enough, and the delinquent aspect of Madoka should've been fleshed out a lot more in my opinion. I liked Hikaru as a character but not for this series, she just kept the series stuck in the mud for a long time and made you feel bad every time she got blown off or screwed.

They were psychics. That's all there is to it, I guess.

True, but that's what Kimagure Orange Road is. It's the precursor of your standard love triangle (and later harem) series that keeps dicking around until the MC is forced to say something to the girl he's obviously liked since episode 1.
