What the fucking shit is this

Why is underwater's sub's 99% identical to HorribleSubs

It's like they literally just took their subs and ran daizify.sh which does

Kami -> Godrobe
Seifkuu -> Ultima Uniform
Banji -> Nexus thread

(yes i probably spelled it wrong, you get the point)

Is this SERIOUSLY just a fucking horrible subs edit? are you FUCKING KIDDING ME?

If it it, fansubbing deserves to fucking die.
>>
They both just take them from CrunchyRoll.
>>
>>100268493
But it's canon /a/ opinion that crunchyroll is absolute garbage in every single way and can never be accepted all

inb4 lies about 'not a hivemind'
>>
>>100268428
The only reason underwater is preferrable to begin with is because horriblesubs (read: webrips) are terrible quality and because of the typesetting.

the subs on both are fine
>>
>>100268428
Crunchy has the best subs for that show. It's sad but true.
>>
True fansubs have been dead for quite some time. Stop being so new.
>>
>>100268533
I actually have a paid subscription to CR.
>>
>>100268533
this just in : 4chan is full of hypocrits
>>
>>100268428
I remember Daiz saying that he just goes through and edits CR. Then adds so much bloat that any scene with lots of movement lags like Hell.
>>
>>100268534
>and because of the typesetting.
I don't understand typesetting.
>>
So basically diaz/underwater doesn't actually improve the translation at all, he just replaces a few proper nouns and calls it better.

that's great.
>>
>>100268540
Fansubs died at the time when simulcasts made them irrelevant.
>>
>>100268629
translation : Daiz goes through and injects his commie-based dogma into the subs
>>
>>100268631
What are you confused about, pray?
>>
>>100269053
What it is in regards to anime.
I mean, are we talking about the points in the sentences at which they are broken? Are we talking about the timing? Are we talking about the placement on the screen?

If it's the former I have that shit disabled in my media players.
>>
>>100269466
Typesetting as I understand it is almost like 'art' of subbing. Pic related, Underwater subs have insane shit like reversed reflected subs inside the glasses.
>>
Have you ever watched a HorribleSubs episode and see text at the top of the screen that makes little sense in context? Typesetting is what fixes that.
>>
>>100269801
That's stupid editing shit. It's shit.

>>100269874
No, I have dumb shit like that turned off. My players display only plain text, in only one font, at the bottom of the screen.

Thank you both for explaining it.
>>
>>100268748
Well, there is still the odd show that doesn't get simulcasted.

Especially Joshiraku comes to mind, but last season pretty much everything except for children and family shows got simulcasted.
>>
>>100269466
>Are we talking about the placement on the screen?
Yes. The idea is to get it to match the on-screen styling of the nip it's translating as seamlessly as possible.
>>
Better quality.
>>
>>100270029
>disabling something that can seamlessly add in translations to japanese text giving anime maximum enjoyment
>seriously believing that having a bunch of text on the screen out of place is better than typesetting
You sound like a fucking terrible person to watch anime with.
>>
>>100269801
I don't even care about the translation anymore. They are all the same edited scripts. I just care about the quality of the typesetting and perhaps some stylistic choices (primarily leaving in honorifics and such).
>>
>>100270195
I grew up watching anime in the 80's and 90's. Subtitles go at the bottom. That is their place, they need to know it. On screen text translations should be included in notes or something, or just talked about on /a/.

I don't care if it has meaning behind it if it doesn't sound good. I don't listen to music for a fucking philosophy course I listen to it because it is pleasant to my ears.

Literally, no joke, the main fucking reason that they change it, that anyone changes it, is because they have to try THIS FUCKING HARD to JUSTIFY THEIR OWN EXISTENCE

when HorribleSubs releases 12-48 hours before the average fansub group and is 95%+ as good, and sometimes actually better, they have to be contrarian just to try to make an ARGUMENT for why you should even fucking bother

especially on /a/ where you might find that if you don't discuss a show the day it airs, you won't get almost any discussion at all.

The whole thing just reeks of an attempt to stay relevant, it's seriously just sad. God help them when CR/HS upgrades to hi10p, or someone makes a HorribleSubs 2.0 that uses CR subs with a better video encode

Then we can finally bury the fucking decript art of fansubbing.

Daiz openly stated they edit CR's script because it's faster than translating from scratch (which they had to do for one episode last season because CR was delayed).

CR's default translations are terrible, what they did to Chu2 this season is an abomination. Plus even if Underwater is just playing quality control for CR scripts, you could still call a lot of what they do translation because of how untranslated CR is.

That aside, Underwater still times the subs to a properly encoded raw and puts real effort into typesetting, so overall it's by far the best choice for KLK, because that's a series where creative typesetting makes a difference.

How exaclty DOES IRCommie find these threads? Do they have a bot that scrapes /a/?

No shit, but if you translated the head of the pun and left the tail in Japanese it would have no meaning, so you can translate the tail of the pun and leave the head in Japanese.
>>
>>100272235
Your head is very far up your ass. I was the only one of my circle of friends to understand it as a pun because I can read kanji.

Underwater is the birthchild of commie. diaz has far too much commie blood in him, they always fall into the exact same pattern or arguments and tropes

In theory yes, in practice, especially on the internet, there is not.

Opinions. I say this as somebody who likes the Godrobe translation, Kamui sounds better to me. But the problem is that it's totally unintelligible to English speakers, you have to know Japanese to get the pun and if you know Japanese then subs are irrelevant.

Godrobe is a fine translation, it sounds good and is accurate enough that no information is lost from the liberty taken with the final kanji.

Because people only complain about shit if they saw it untranslated first, probably because they assume that if someone left something untranslated it must be "sacred and pure Nihonese that just can't be expressed in barbaric English!" or something along the lines of that.

But it really just goes to show that the complaints about this shit aren't consistent at all. One moment it's okay to translate made-up common nouns and the next it's not.

>>100272910

>>100271457
>many things CANNOT be translated

自縄自縛 is a Chinese-style four-character saying that literally means to be tied by one's own rope, with the literary meaning of suffering or getting trapped in by your own intentions or actions

戦維喪失 is a play on 戦意喪失, which means "to lose the will to fight" except will (意) is replaced by maintain (維). Both are pronounced "i". The transliteration on the left is ambiguous because it looks like it's "se ni" when it's really "sen i". Anyway, the etymology of 維 is that the left radical is "thread". The right radical was phonetic for "fast". To tie fast -> to maintain.
So the "stripped" part of the right side of the image is there to maintain the play on words going on here. Ryuko forces the loss of the will to fight by revoking the threads that give them the ability to fight.

Yo Daiz, few questions for Kill la Kill.
>Did any of you at Underwater get your hands on the first BD?
>Are you planning on doing a BD release with possibly updated translations? (I don't care about the Ultima/Godrobe/whatever thing, I just want to know if you'll double check the translation for a perfect release)

>Updating certain character Romanizations so that they contain macrons instead (like Ryūko, Kiryūin, Gamagōri, etc.)?
>What program do you use to for your typesetting?
>Redoing and crosschecking episode 12 with CR's, along with all derivative translations, just so it feels consistent with the rest?

>Lacey (switching vowels)

Plus, it kinds makes me think of skimpy clothing with laces, and that's what it's said to be derived from. Not only that, but it can also be used as a boy name, which plays to her tomboyish character.

Lacey \l(a)-cey\ as a girl's name (also used as boy's name Lacey), is pronounced LAY-see. It is of Old French origin. Nobleman's surname carried to England and Ireland after the Norman conquest. Lacey and its variants may also be used in reference to lace, the delicate fabric made of netted thread, hence giving it a feminine connotation. Country singer Lacy J. Dalton.

In my opinion, if subgroups actually took their time translating everything, word-for-word, the point of watching it over anything else would be moot - the main goal of most subgroups is to keep the West as up-to-date as the East. There are some other subgroups that attempt at 100% though but simply don't come out nearly fast enough to even make it worth while, considering they may lack in such a forte in encoding and typesetting or timing.

However, I think taking subtitles directly from another group is pretty fraudulent. Even if it's for the sake of re-encoding a video, it should be for the people you took it from, not your own subgroup. The constant bickering between the different groups is silly. Speaking of silly things, why not translate everything except attack moves? Is it the same idea as not translating English names of moves or something? Also,

>tfw I want to help contribute to the subbing scene
>Go to the Commie IRC
>Get bitched at and cussed out for interrupting their conversation on waifus
>Send an email to HorribleSubs
>Never get a reply back

>>100275077

Oh God, that's a thing? How horrifying.
>>
>>100274470
You take the important part of the name, adapt it in a way that would allow the target audience to intuitively pick up the meaning in the same way the original audience would pick up the meaning of the original.

It only makes any sense to do it if the names are silly, have obvious meaning, and the meaning is repeatedly referenced or joked about.

JP -> EN example off the top of my head: In Gyakuten Saiban, there's a character named Yahari. There's a recurring joke that if something happens, you know it's Yahari (Yappari Yahari). In Phoenix Wright, he's Larry Butz. When something smells, you know it's the Butz.

EN -> others example off the top of my head:
Spongebob Squarepants is full of this shit. Squidward (EN) = Calamardo (SP) = Ikardo (JP)
Squid = Calamar = Ika
An added bonus is that Ikaru (怒る) means to get mad.

>>
>>100275196

Well generally, to my understanding, the placement isn't a huge issue really with the right tools - it's easy enough where you could watch a few videos on YouTube and get the gist of it. The timing takes a little bit of practice though, since sometimes you can't simply slap it on the video. I'd imagine it'd be easy enough to understand after a week of practicing for an hour a day or something.
>>
>>100275186
Just go for manga. Fansubbing is dead unless you're a TLC group, or are interested in a niche genre that doesn't get simulcasted. There's also dorama, toku and j-comedy.
>>
>>100275279
Some of it is also editing the TL knowing how to properly break up a sentence. Not exactly rocket surgery but CR fucks that up often enough.
>>
>>100275186
>Well do you feel you're a reliable rep for Commie?

I have nothing to do with Commie. But by looking at their page you can see that they're not looking for anything but translators right now.

>What I'm more curious is to hear your response to someone who wants to get into the subbing scene.

Well, you should try to make your way into a group somehow. Your chances are much better if you know how to do something beforehand. Something like timing for example is easy to learn on your own.
>>
>>100275272

>>
>>100275372
Try FFF, Eien usually replies fast & doesn't fuck around as much as they do in commie - but also here only translators as far as I am aware of it.
Nothing against rhe, herkz or dxs, but the channel and organization itself is a mess and that they released applications (including ip address) in the past isn't anything new either. Made me, on my end, regret doing it at all.
>>
>>100275372
Go to /m/ and see what needs translating. They are always trying to find subbers for their old ass mecha shows from the 70s.
>>
>>100275524
You know, if you "don't know how to read anything outside Romanji" then you're very likely not good enough to translate stuff to begin with.

But if you really want to translate stuff, I recommend reading this:
http://wp.me/p22Y5x-1lb
>>
>>100275524
Character is speaking a long sentence with recognizable english words. When translated the words are reordered such that english word 1 is now before english word 2. Do you shove a wall of text on screen for the length of the entire sentence? Do you break it up by clause but have some dissonance where your audience hears and recognizes a word but doesn't see it in translation until later? Stuff like that. Moonspeak is a language where you can keep talking in one long incredibly unbroken sentence, moving from topic to topic so that no one has a chance to interrupt; it's really quite hypnotic.
>>
>>100275538
The only person whose application was released (that I know of) was tali. And that was a troll application, anyway.

>>100275915

>>
>>100275524
私は
あなたの事が
好き

watashi wa [long pause]
anata no koto ga [as fireworks go off]
suki

The line, unbroken is simply "I like you"

But it's broken into three parts with long pauses. The "like you" part of the sentence is deliberately timed to match one thing.

How do you break up the subtitle in a way that maintains the timing without being worded in a way that seems forced?
>>
>>100271175

>>100275780

Ah, okay, I see what you mean. Yeah, that's always an awkward thing I've noticed. I feel like you almost kinda' have to think backwards to get it to work really, which is troublesome. That's probably just amateur on my part though. I think that dissonance can't really be helped though in my opinion, unless you just generalize the whole thing, which I'd imagine would make it a bit more confusing, eh?
>>
>>100276492
>>100276550

The particular difference between what we both said though is I tried being more literal and you were making it more flow - that's one thing that confuses me is when is either of those options appropriate or not? Also considering it kinda' affects how the viewer would view the character's personality too, through their vocabulary.

There's a large difference between HS (100% automated rips of video, audio and subs with no manual work involved whatsoever) and groups that use simulcast script as a base (where you still do things like TLC/editing/timing/typesetting/encoding). Of course, there are cases where the groups do practically no editing or TLC (see herkz/jdp at Commie) but there's still manual work involved in the form of typesetting/encoding at least. All in all, "simulcast edit" by itself doesn't say much because the amount of additional work done really depends on the group and staff involved.

I know that. People are retarded, news at eleven. It's like the people who ask YouTube anime uploaders when they will create the next season of Haruhi or whatever. I think I've also got at least one e-mail in the past asking when Underwater is going to make the next season of some anime.

It's certainly not a big apartment (~32 m^2), but you can fit about four people in the living room / kitchen (the kitchen utilities are in the corner behind the camera) fine, just move and turn the sofa somewhat and grab some chairs from the bedroom. For two-three people it's enough to just turn the sofa so everyone can have a seat and a nice direct view to the TV.

But when I'm alone, I keep the sofa like that so I can comfortably lay on it while watching anime (or do anything else on the TV).

It's actually not that uncommon where I'm from. It makes sense to have the washer near something else that uses water as well to use the pipes more efficiently.
>>
>>100280922
>where is your dryer

I have a drying rack. That's about the only thing that's annoying to place around here when extended, when it's warm I can have it on the balcony but when it's -20C outside (like it is right now) you gotta fit it inside somewhere (which usually means the bedroom).

As for the other three, I'm not retarded, so no.

>>100281005
The apartment complex gets internet via optical fibre. The choices here are 10/10 for ~30€ or 100/10 for ~40€. There's some student discount in those prices (since these apartments are only available for students) but considering that I live in a tiny-ass town in the middle of nowhere it's still pretty damn nice.

Kamui is fine you shit. Anyone can tell from context what it's referring to. What, if you watch a show that has Excalibur, do you expect to have a t/l note explaining "Excalibur is a mythological term that is a corruption of the Welsh Caledfwlch, which refers to a sword in Arthurian legend, but in this case refers to whatever weapon/sword/super move that is currently plastered over the entire screen"
>>

Excalibur has centuries of cultural history.
Kamui have been in Kill la Kill, and Saint Seiya

Fuck being slow, reading some of the posts in this thread made me cringe so hard I just had to write this.
>my horriblesubs are better than yours
HS is the equivalent of the (now mostly dead) speedsubs. The only reason you should watch their releases because they're fast, as they only rip shit from CR; or maybe if your toaster is so bad it can't play much else other than 480p files.
I feel a bit annoyed at how most groups nowadays just get CR rips as well and fix things in them, but I can't moon so it's not like I can find out if the translation is good or not. Whatever makes the subs arrive faster, I guess.
>>
>>100283345
Most groups that edit CR have a translation checker to make sure CR didn't fuck something up.

>>
>>100272044
Daiz, out of curiosity, did you compare 23.976 Hz mode on your plasma to smooth motion at 60 Hz?
>>
>>100287717
For some reason my GPU shits itself if I have my display in 60Hz mode and the TV in 23.976 Hz mode, which makes the latter completely unusable for watching purposes (the picture starts going crazy after a couple moments), so I'm kinda forced to use 60Hz on the TV. I have no idea what causes it.
>>
>>100287811
You're still here?!
>>
>CR gets paid
>fansubbers get donations

gee I wonder why fansubbing is dying
maybe because it is in process of being replaced by a superior and a more sustainable business model?
>>
>>100287811
I had the same problem, but enabling automatic fullscreen exclusive mode in madVR fixed it.
In any case, I found 60 Hz + smooth motion to look slightly better on my plasma, and seen multiple people say the same on doom9, so I wonder what's your take on it.
>>
>>100268533
Crunchy subs are almost always mediocre. Not amazing, but not hadena. And they're fast.
The video quality is the worst, though.
For speedsubs, there are worse options.
>>
>>100287717
Why would you even think of that smooth motion crap when your display frame rate is the same as the video frame rate? There’s no need for comparisons.

Yes, I'm "listening" to a very boring lecture while doing some Lua scripting for typesetting purposes. This thing just needs some blur (which is actually pretty tricky) and it'll be pretty much perfect (though it also needs a better font for the final sign).

>>100287975
>fullscreen exclusive mode

I see. I guess I might try it later, but I'll probably just stick to 60Hz + no exclusive mode + smooth motion.
>>
Can I get something that's like halfway inbetween underwater and crunchy
>>
>>100287950
I can only speak for the groups I'm in and for myself. We don't do this for profit. At all. We do it for fun.

All of the money we receive in donations goes directly to paying for server costs, webhosting, and sometimes BD purchases. Any leftover expenses are paid for out of our pockets.

I don't lead any fansub groups, but I do have my own personal seedbox that I use to help seed our releases that I pay for out of my own income. I'm sinking my hard-earned money into fansubbing not because I get some sort of reward for it, but because I think it's fun. I'm willing to spend money on my hobbies. That's why I keep fansubbing, even when CR simuls o9k shows per season. It's fun.
>>
>>100275097
The AA team did a really good job.
Sasuga professional translators, I guess.
>>
>>100288417
>halfway inbetween underwater and crunchy
Two options:
1. Shitty CR {\an8} typesetting with Underwater's terminology
2. Glorious Underwater typesetting with CR's shitty transliteration

Personally, I find Underwater's script much easier to read. They translated terms that needed to be translated in a way that got 99% of the message across. When I read "sen-i-soshitsu" or "banshi", I'm literally losing 100% of the meaning.
>>
>>100288282
>This thing just needs some blur

And some dots or whatever at the bottom.
>>
>>100271175
>Higi Jijo-Jibako

That kinda sounds like a name of dance in a dancing song
>>
Why do some groups do this instead of just covering the text in the existing box and using that? It's not possible in all cases of course, but here the background is plain white so it should be no problem.
>>
>>100289598

Some of the weeaboos around here flip their shit if any of the original precious Nihonese gets covered, even though they're unable to decipher it either way.
>>
>>100289598
Now that I looked at it again, those boxes fading in and out might make it look a bit weird. But I still think something like that covers up way too much of the screen to be worth it.
>>
>>100289598
>>100289716
I could be wrong since I haven't asked the typesetter or Raze, but I'm pretty sure it has to do with the fade in/out of the box. If you used the \fad tag on top of the original sign, I'm pretty sure you would get an ugly, overlapping mess. It was probably done separately simply for aesthetics.
>>
>>100289598
That seems a pretty amateurish thing to do

Covering up that portion of roof
>>
>>100289598
If the original box fades in, trying to fade in a cover at the same time looks quite ugly.

You can somewhat get around to it by just not matching the original fade and fading a cover quickly in and out right after/before the original fades, though even this looks a bit funny and can sometimes leave you rather little time to read the sign. It's really a "pick your poison" situation.

Plus some people also whine when you cover up the original signs, but my opinion is that if they want to see the original signs so much, they can always turn the subs off.
>>
>>100289871
Yet another alternative is to have the typeset fade in before the sign appears.
>>
>>100289967
That's an excellent point, I should make use of it more myself (I think I've used it just once in the past).
>>
>>100289871
>some people also whine when you cover up the original signs
The best typesets are when you can't even tell that it's not part of the video. Or the cases where it fits so well that you don't care.

Unfortunately, I can't come up with any examples off the top of my head for the former. As for the latter, I was really impressed with the KlK signs. I only use HS as a last resort, so I watched Underwater's release first. I actually had to turn off the subs to be sure that the English wasn't put there by Trigger. Give your TSer an Internet high five for me.
