the only time I've supported the anime/manga industry is when they actually deserve it, or there's no actual alternative.
Such as Crest of the Stars, and Shana novel translations..and possibly Nodame Cantabile manga.
>>
>>10026629
But people usually have a low powerlevel. A translation should be made to provide the anime/movie/book/whatever to the largest. Shit like Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei will never get licensed anyway.
>>
>>10026629

The majority of the time that's completely unimportant. It's only walls of text shows like SZS that really suffer from it, and not many of them get released anyway (and I haven't really bought any of that kind of show anyway, not my style).

Translation notes, the majority of the time, are the tool of the lazy and they're an excuse to not go to the effort of making a proper translation.

Eg, Tessa's mizu shoubai joke in FMP Fumoffu.

>>10026657

Anime is not a fucking cultural lesson, they're cartoons.

Translations should not only be in English, they should be in proper English, not overly literal junk to preserve "the original Japanese" or whatever the fuck excuses idiot fansubbers make.

1) Because the dvd subtitle standard can only do those kind of subtitles

>when dvd sales start paying for the animator's salaries directly
This doesn't make sense for a couple of reasons

Animators salaries are paid beforehand. It costs money to actually make anime, that money goes to animators.

Buying DVDs gives royalties to the Japanese company that produced the anime

Licensing fees to obtain the rights to sell anime can cost upwards of 2 million dollars.

By supporting the USA anime industry, by purchasing shows you like, the licensors will continue to spend money and support the Japanese industry, and royalties from all the DVDs purchased will continue to go to the creators. That doesn't mean you should go out and buy every anime you watch, however. Fuck that, but I digress. The more you know...

Also, I forget which subbers did this but during the first GIGA DRILL BREAKA scene in TTGL I remember they made the subs green and and fancy and shit.

It was so fucking awesome. It was like "FUCK YEAH GIGA DRILL BREAKER!!!" instead of what will happen with the DVDs where you'll either be squinting at little yellow subs that say "Giga Drill Breaker" for a minute, or you'll be hearing some untalented bored voice actor read out "Giga Drill...Breaker."
>>
>>10026989
I meant the salariers remark as a general comment about how you dont support the fine people that make an anime rather you give money to the distributers who keep the VAST majority of that money.

As for the US anime industry, it can die as far as Im concerned. I dont want to watch dubs, period.
>>
>>10027043
Yeah, the green subs there were epic. Kudos to Black_Order.
>>
>>10027043
Soft subs don't work that way. I don't see how people whine about either type of subs either.

You need sleep if you think with how small yellow subs commonly are is blinding and hard subs are nice for the presentation but it also hampers the overall quality of the video itself.
>>
>>10027086
I like styled subs in general. In fact, its the reason I switched from vlc to mpclassic. It makes it WAY easier to read AND it makes it easier to tell who is saying what in scenes where two charecters are talking at the same time for those of us who dont speak japanese.
>>
Fucking copypasta.
>>
>>10
>>
>>10026273
OH NO YOU DIDN'T
>>
>>10027059
It's not just dubs though. A shitload of money goes to the Japs. That's money that's being used to increase budgets for certain productions (I'm serious).

The US industry pisses me off, and they rarely ever license the shows I'd be willing to buy, and if they died, it wouldn't really matter. American money is just extra padding for the Japs: Anime wouldn't die from losing the US counterpart. But even with all this considered, that doesn't mean I want our end of the industry to sink and die just because I don't watch dubs.
>>
>>10027121

>>
>>10027059
They don't since there's no post-profit for them to come back on.

They're just given the episodes. No sponsors, no merchandise without licensing, no artists without licensing, no broadcasts without licensing, just the episodes.
>>
>>10027136
>Let sleeping dogs lie

>>
>-easy to install, you don't need to download codecs to watch

>-Doesn't take up room on your computer.

>-Watching stuff on a monitor is a pain.
Unless you watch your DVD's using a projector, that point is irrelevant.

And regardless, if you have a TV, linking your PC to it aint that hard.

>-If you want to show an anime you like to someone who isn't usually an anime fan, Dubs come in handy.
The people I'm most likely to show stuff to aren't native english speakers, so subs work better.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghosting

"A problem in LCD screens when tiny pixels creating the image take time to switch on and off and can't do it fast enough. The problem, widely recognized as the main drawback of LCD screens, is apparent in fast moving objects such as tennis balls, but even slower moving images get fuzzy. This can happen especially when the device is exposed to cold for long periods of time. This problem is usually not apparent on modern LCD screens."

I don't have ghosting on my HDTV. Probably because the one I bought isn't total shit.

Second, upscales only suck if you have bad hardware/software. DVD upscales on PS3 = looks damn good. When it comes to 720p or 1080p fansubs it still looks better than watching most DVD's for me.

OH NOEZ!!!11 SOME1S ENJOYING SOMETHING I DONT. HOW DARE THEM.

I have had many favorable experiences with high-def anime, upscales included, and I have had no problems with them, visually or otherwise, so you'll forgive me if I have no idea what you are crying about. At the very least they can compare favorably to DVD quality so the arguement that fansubs are of a lower quality than DVDs is slowly becoming meaningless.

Yes. Yes they are.

I tried buying anime once.

It was from Geneon, a week before they announced cancellation of all sales.

Go figure.

Am I the only person that notices pixelation in fansubs? Whether it's DivX or HD, I always notice it on my HD monitor.

On DVD's, I don't see it anywhere near as often. And when I do, it's 'cause the DVD is a bootleg.
