How is the Fist of the North Star anime compared to the manga? I've only read as far as Kenshiro defeating the first major protagonist (Shin), but I hear the anime added a lot of extra backstory and other content. Is that worth what's probably shitty 80's level animation?

The anime adds some back story but it also adds alot of filler before Shin dies and Raoh strolls in. It still is better than the new movies.
