I use png for anything personal, because I have more than enough space to store a few 50 meg files.

It's a minor quality loss for a massively reduced filesize. You can only tell the difference at 200% zoom or more. In addition, saving shit like shitty encoded anime screenshots as png is pure idiocy.
>>
>>100164499
>>100164529
As you can see.
These 2 images are exact same resolution, exact same quality, yet the JPEG is less than half the file size than the PNG.
This is why JPEG is superior when it comes to lots of colors.
So i say again, fuck off PNG fanboys, PNG is only good for transparencies and not many colors.

PNG is lossless, while JPEG obviously uses compression. It's just that I doubt with the large areas of solid colors in anime-styled images, that the visual difference would matter much.

DSLR cameras also wouldn't default to JPEG compression if it didn't still do a good job at image quality.

PNG kinda straddles the uses though: as a lossless format, it's good for HQ images where size isn't an issue. But since you can use a color palette with it, it's also great for stuff like manga where you rarely need more than 32 greytones.
