What'cha working on?
Is there a preferred method for cleaning moire patterns? 600 DPI colors are giving me trouble. Right now I'm just trying to apply colors in separate layers.
Surface blur (1~2, 50~100).
How do you into topaz for shitty Dengeki raws?
I've been trying some translations for fun/practice even though I'm not fluent. I need to get better at making it flow better, because I'm still in a literal mindset, so everything turns out very stiff.
You can use GIMP
Why would you?
So, relatively new to this. What are the preferred dimensions for pages?
What are you practicing with? Pixiv comics of your favorite series are a good start if you haven't done that already.
I do mine at 1600px high. I think anything higher than 2000px is too much, but that's just me.
I wend full retard and jumped straight into a random seinen series that looked interesting. I got lucky though, since it has a little less dialogue and SFX.
Which seinen series?
Hope that works out for you then. To be honest, that's how I've gotten into a lot of things so I get what you mean; the whole "going into something a little above beginner level and just pressing forward" kind of thing.
Zou no Senaka. I finished the first chapter, but since I don't know anything about cleaning and typesetting I'm not taking it too seriously. Though I probably should be trying something with furigana instead.
>Using gimp for scanlation
I don't use it myself but as long as it looks good, I don't see the problem. Even if they're just making things harder for themselves.
Because typesetting on GIMP is as retarded as typesetting on MS Paint.
CAF is your friend.
So, uh, at what point in using Topaz filters are you considered cancer and incompetent?
At the point where it's blurry as fuck, the tones look like smudges of gray, or you're losing tons of detail.
Is there a certain order to it? Because I've tried Denoise -> Level but that doesn't do much so I just do it the other way around.
Hey, guy who's translating the Mario Sunshine 4koma. How's Harenchi Gakuen going?
Uh, anon why put all three when Editing is both cleaning and typesetting?
Because usually groups will have them separate.
Then why add editor?
Actually, in a VN translation group I'm in, one of the guys is also in a scanlation group and they call redraws "editing", so that's actually what OP meant.
I've been going around /a/ translating RAW pages I see at random. I usually reply with a series of posts containing typed Japanese and translated English. I wish people would post random RAW pages more often.
Gantz cleaner here.
We are re-scanning volumes to make some HD release in Italian/french.
Its pretty hard to edit this shit, there's outside bubble text everywhere and a lot of background.
redrawing in a pain.
That's very rare actually. In scanlation since ancient times the term editor was used to describe people that did all three, though only until like 4 years ago redrawing was seen as a part of cleaning and no its separate thing.
Oh. Dunno why it says that then, that was just my assumption based on previous knowledge.
There's been a guy doing "untranslated story times".
I-I would like to help out with cleaning, typesetting and editing so things like Koe no Katachi could be released faster, but I'm too afraid making a fool out of myself.
If you have no idea how to go about editing, then you'll have a really hard time with that series because it's from a weekly shounen magazine, which has some of the worst paper on the industry. They're a cleaning nightmare.
As much as I'd like to, I'm pretty slow right now with little experience. The reason I include the Japanese in my post is so that others can also check the accuracy of my translation. Storytime might be a little too much for me currently since the OP would probably be done dumping by the time I finish translating the first few pages.
I'm working on this, and the redraws make me want to cut my wrists.
There are endless amounts of raws sitting around of the internet. No one's stopping you from practicing before trying to join a group.
Given the 1 minute timer, dump threads can last for about 4 hours for image limit.
I'm a quick learner but you are probably right.
Straightening and cropping an SMT Nocturne 4koma that I scanned, Wonder if I can find a translator.
I wish there was someone interested in translating this, but the only thing I could do is buying the volume and scanning it.
Here's a pretty difficult page for anyone looking for anything to practice on.
I hate moot for doing that. It gets even longer than a minute, I've had 100 second timers when dumping. Surely all the shekels he's gotten should be enough to pay for server space to allow a shorter cooldown time, because a minute and a half is fucking ridiculous (and nothing pisses me off more about it than leaving it to upload while I do something else and it turns out I mistyped the captcha, so it's just been sitting there for a few minutes).
Like I said, I'd only be able to finish translating a few pages.
A few pages is progress.
>tfw no one wants to translate even a chapter more of Golgo 13
The funny thing is, when you look at the raws they don't even look that bad. It's when you start trying to work on it that despair hits you.
They look horrendous, what are you talking about.
Well at least that particular page doesn't have any bleed through. That would just be icing on the "I really don't want to even attempt to clean this" cake.
Anyone have any tips on getting raws?
I know of a handful of sites where people upload them, and of course people will often upload to nyaa, but it seems like most sites all have the same raws. So if you're looking for something and one site doesn't have it, chances are no other raw site has it.
Is share still a good way to find new raws?
>Teppuu scans are now 2 chapters behind
I hate this. Why did I pick up this manga? Whats the perferred way of getting scanlators to do a manga you want? Do I have to learn moon?
Okay, I'll be more inclined to translate storytime RAWs. People can check my translations since I figure some can read them.
Just passing by to say thank you to scanlators. I know it's a hard and thankless job and I'm grateful to everyone who keeps doing it.
You guys could do with less drama, though.
But muh exclusive project
Post a translation on 4chan and wait for someone to edit it in.
>You guys could do with less drama, though.
Not a problem when you go solo.
But then that just multiplies the work, among other downsides.
Drama's been an important part of scanlation since 05.
Maybe it's because your regular translation team member's doing it for the attention and praise
What's a good resolution/JPEG quality level to resample to for dumping?
Forgot the Batoto link.
Is there a way to keep like a favorite fonts in section or something ?
It's a bit annoying to have to search through the fonts every time.
While I will admit that it's kind of sad when the people working on it make that their utmost priority, it does feel pretty good seeing your downloads/views rise after toiling on a chapter for several hours. It almost feels like you've accomplished something.
Moot killed it with post timers
Post it when you're done.
I would be more likely to translate than to clean, but I thought I would spend a few minutes giving it a go.
How does this look? I was thinking of straightening out some of the lines but didn't feel like putting in the effort.
I imagine it's not anywhere near most of your standards, but personally I wouldnt mind using something just a little better than this.
I want to help with scanlations but I have no way in
I don't know anybody and I have few skills
I wish I had the willpower to learn Japanese so I could just do everything myself slowly
What's wrong with dumping PNG?
I'm QCfag and do half of the cleaning for my group, but I feel like I'm not doing enough to help. Translatorfags/editfags, what can I do to make things easier?
Besides the obvious stuff like anything being done to Erina's uniform, you really missed making the edges and margins between panels white. It helps to invert the colors since the it's more noticeable among the blacks.
then why should they want to spend hours of their free time cleaning, translating, re-lettering chinese comics, if it's not for some e-peen points?
out of the kindness of their heart?
>You can use GIMP
You can use MSPaint. Being able to use it is no reason to use it over something superior.
That's not even leveled completely.
GIMP is superior to Photoshop since it respects your freedoms.
Go away /g/
I release at quality 9, standard optimized, and height 1600, or raw height, whichever is smaller
What exactly do you mean by making things easier? On yourself or for the group? If it's the latter you could try memorizing all the keyboard shortcuts for tools you use and set some actions for processes you do frequently (for example I have actions set for things like cropping, RGB/Grayscale and contracting selections).
Be honest to yourself, to you really have something worth hiding?
How the fuck? GIMP has a lot of tools that you probably don't know how to use, that's why you're acting like a fucktard.
>Exporting as JPG
>Not superior PNG-8
Learn to do the gruntwork. Clean and basic redrawing, and post them somewhere.
Well, one thing you could do is transcribe all the text so I don't have to break out the handwriting recognition tool all the time, but in my opinion that's more trouble than it's worth.
Well of course I do that for most pages, but PNG-8 isn't a good format for color pages. And he wasn't asking about PNG.
He didn't say shit about color pages.
If I cleaned up pages and stuff and posted them somewhere they'd just stay there to rot forever
I mean I'd be capable of doing a passing job for everything but translation if it's a cleaner series but translators are in high demand so translators doing stuff are with groups already it seems
On that note, anyone have a recommended OCR software? I'm using ABYYY Finereader.
Just small changes in how I send things off that make it easier on the other members. Different formats, how I compile them, that sort of thing.
The rawtext or the bits I QC?
Is a drawing tablet worth buying for scanlation? If it helps any with redraws I'd buy one in a heartbeat.
I just use the handwriting pad in Microsoft's Japanese IME. Google's is garbage, though.
Everything that needs translating. But as I said, it's not worth the time.
I redraw with my tablet when I can't do it with my mouse.
Think about it this way: if even 1/10 of the paid Photoshop users had donated that money to GIMP instead, then not only would GIMP be better than Photoshop in every way, it would also still be free software that respects your freedoms. People that use Photoshop are just contributing to a viscous circle of shitty software.
Only if you do lots of chapters. It's not worth if you do something once every month.
Working on a Belldandy CG set. It's gun b gud.
>He thinks scanlators pay for photoshop
I never said that. Just by using the software you'll help attract other users, some of which would be paid Photoshop users. Even if you don't pay for software, you've probably written a tutorial or two at some point, which could instead be written for GIMP, so that more people would understand how to use it.
Literally the only faggot in scanlation that I've even heard of paying for Photoshop is Woxxy and that's only because he needed to have a legal copy for one of his silly classes or some shit. And that's with a big ass student discount.
Well I've got two and a half volumes to go through, as well as a monthly release and those certain raw doujinshi I like enough to work on, so that seems pretty justifiable. What should I look at between the $100 - $150 range? Something used is fine too.
You seem to be missing the point. Market share, resources, and community support are all very important things for the growth of software.
Why do you guys bother redrawing shit and making every page pixel perfect.
Most readers spend <20 seconds per page, and barely even look at anything beyond the text.
Something cheap but durable.
My Bamboo Pen works just fine, but since you're willing to spend that much money you may as well get a used Intuos or something and learn to draw while you're at it.
i was also thinking about this earlier today. i noticed photoshop does group fonts, but by language. asian fonts get their own groups. i had an idea to pick a really obscure language and modify all my regularly used fonts to pretend they're made for that language, and theoretically photoshop would automatically group them. i'm not sure how feasible this is but it's the only idea i've come up with.
you could also create a ton of type presets but they won't give you a type preview/won't conform to your currently selected font size.
they really should just put little pins next to font names and let you pin them so they're always at the top of the list.
Maybe GIMP would be popular if it wasn't such a piece of shit.
Seriously, its fundamental approach to image editing is flawed. It will never be a match for Photoshop.
Because muh cleaner pride.
Never had any problem with GIMP, though I know PS is better.
It's because they're assburgers with little social experience and high levels of self-importance
Well I guess I could try the Monoprice tablets. I've heard they've got a good price/performance ratio.
I suppose an Intuos would be the most recommended at that price. Was just wondering if there's anything else in that range worth checking out.
Thank you for the nice work. I'm enjoying the series.
I wish someone would translate this, but I might finally just commission it.
So it would be easier when requesting translations if I included an OCR'd script?
It would be a nice gesture, and probably make you stand out from all of the other people begging for translations.
Perhaps, but I don't think OCR technology is good enough to read Japanese off of images yet.
Works fine here. Only got a couple errors.
If you're into that sort of thing.
bad cleans break immersion and is disrespectful to the medium. the original artists toil over the smallest details of each individual page, making sure it looks the absolute best, knowing their hard work will be recognized by readers. why shouldn't a cleaner do the same thing?
if the cleaning is even the slightest bit noticeable readers will doubt your competence. if all you do is white out/clone stamp and prioritize speed over neatness you'll get the same reaction. however, if you spend your time making things look nice it doesn't get noticed at all, and that is exactly the point of cleaning.
it should really go without saying how important a good cleaning job is. if you're not going to do it properly, then don't try at all. you shouldn't kill yourself over individual pixels, but at the very least give it your greatest effort+1.
I'm not huge into the translation scene. But why hasn't soft translation like what dan/gelbooru does been adopted? Wouldn't it save truckloads of time?
Also doesn't the DJT specifically have a section in its pastebins about Japanese-friendly OCR software?
Have you not read the GTO scanlation? People absolutely hated it.
Some people like to archive shit.
>Seriously, its fundamental approach to image editing is flawed.
Did you even find one window mode?
Translating Sentou Jousai Masurawo (or Battlefield Masurao).
Group's waiting for higher quality scans to come through, so the next update might be delayed a bit.
>the original artists toil over the smallest details of each individual page, making sure it looks the absolute best, knowing their hard work will be recognized by readers. why shouldn't a cleaner do the same thing?
Well, for one, I'm not getting paid to do this.
Then why bother?
Because mah autism.
Still waiting for cleaner to done his cleaning of Latin shorts. There are still two more chapters to go and i didn't really see translater-kun recently.
Those who want to help can grap the rest of the raw here:
if all you do is clean then just come to terms with the fact that you are the team's bitch. it is a thankless position, nobody notices your work except for the team, and you will feel unwanted/disrespected/redundant every minute of every hour you spend clicking away at a cleaning job.
if you can't deal with any one of these things, quit. i don't want to read manga with shitty cleans.
Is there a way to turn off the content aware function on the patch tool? I set it to normal on the drop down menu, but it still changes the section when I let go of the mouse.
I'm relatively inexperienced at Photoshop. I want to copy-paste and save the text from a page into their own individual files, but I'm not sure how to script that.
Select the text, then Copy - start new file - paste - save?
HOLY FUCK I JUST REALIZED I TOTALLY FORGOT ABOUT THIS
HI RES SCANLATIONS WHERE
Editing comics soothes my nerves and distracts me from my real-life obligations.
>if all you do is clean
Don't make assumptions.
>i don't want to read manga with shitty cleans.
Better learn some Japanese and import your own comics, 'cause, chances are, you don't have a choice, sucker.
It's cool to be in this thread and the daily Japanese thread at the same time, like everyone is hard at work at their own specialty to make manga as best as we can.
Sometimes, I think the hardest part of being a scanlator is accepting the fact that there are simply too many series out there for you to pick up, and so little time.
Was the all caps really necessary?
1400px height is as hi res as you'll be able to get.
Finished scanning a couple of Dowman Sayman pieces, so expect either a dump or an upload on Exhentai soon or something.
My dick is ready
You're a good man. Truly.
Non-h, but there are twin lolis.
My dick is dead. I don't know if it can ever recover.
Dowman Sayman is usually too heartwarming to fap so it's fine by me.
Just you wait.
Remember when SnoopyCool was still active? ;_;
Hell, I remember when Mangascreener was still active ;_;
Remember when Anon Scans was still active? ;_;
>mfw baka can be written in kanji
Content Aware Fill. 90% of the time it doesn't work on big selections, while the other 5% it works with some touch ups needed after, and the last 5% it works on its own, mainly in patterns. It works wonders on color pages, though, so long as you don't just select everything you're redrawing and use it, but rather use it in pieces and patch up with the clone tool what doesn't look good.
Please don't tell you actually didn't know that.
Is serious.png ambiguous to you?
A metric fuckton of a mix of shows, manga, and LNs into spanish.
De nada, maricones.
Stop using my translations to translate into Spanish, faggot. Also that better be Mexican Spanish and not shitty Spaniard Spanish.
>Translating to spanish
>Typesetting things in spanish
Why, why would you waste your life like that? Also >>100154974
I'm using a more Castellano approach to it, so it is different than regular cocaine snowboarder spanish and beaner spanish.
I let the other faggots do that.
Still wasting your time with the spanish community.
Technically, beaner spanish and castellano is the same thing as far as Mexico is concerned.
That's because beaners don't understand they sound different than the rest of the Latin community, much like Southerners or Australians
As far as I know, Spaniard spanish sucks dicks and whoever speaks it needs to be exterminated.
please let it be good scan.I love those.
I find it somewhat surprisingly that if you email, Snoopy actually replies. I guess someone still has to keep their site up.
Well the closest thing to scanlation I've done recently is write a pretty crude script to rip the latest chapter from CR from the url.
I'm pretty sure that's him still replying. He had a pretty big e-peen.
I recently got thanked by the original translator of a scan I did a year ago. It's a nice and fuzzy feeling.
>using GIMP for anything other than Green Peppers
What an immense slut you are for simple compliments
It's like you enjoy nonsexual slavery
Any more guides pic?
If I messed up the scans (not very familiar), I can always rescan under different settings. I just have 600 DPI .tif files with no filters or anything on them.
I'm transcribing the Dowman Aigis piece right now, sicne I don't think thetsuuyaku wants to translate it since he hasn't played Persona. So, maybe someone else will translate it.
We used gimp in high school so that's all I know.
>I'm working on this
I really appreciate someone is! It's great.
Just waiting on the cleaner to be available to clean... seems he had "detention", then claimed dropbox wasnt updating for him, now his skype says its his sisters bday. So either he has shitty lucky, or he doesn't want to just tell me he doesnt want to work on it right now...
stop wasting your effort and time on a shitty artist
>School too poor to afford industry-standard applications.
Feels bad man. Our graphic arts lab had Quark Xpress, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Pagemaker (later called inDesign)
If anyone has translations for a manga that no editor/cleaner/redrawer/typesetter/slight QC/proofreader (I generally do all of these at once) has expressed interest in, and doesn't mind slow (I mean potentially months)/erratic release schedule, feel free to reply to this post.
Though I won't typeset everything due to my environment being generally requiring me to be SFW at most times ;_;
