>Translating "la vie est drôle" to "Life is droll"
This is just pretentious daiz.
It's actually pronounced as "la /v/ is troll".
And then Satsuki translated it into another OMOSHIROI
What's wrong with it?
Most merkins don't know it mean fun.
Le visage 10-bit.
Droll has some specific connotations that aren't there in drôle which simply means funny.
Why don't just stick with 'superior' CR's sub?
Which would be?
curious or unusual in a way that provokes dry amusement.
Where's the problem then?
So... same as funny, then.
Drole means 'haha' funny though, not dry funny
Actually it's both.
You even mistyped droll, why anyone even consider your post?
Origin of DROLL: French drôle
I see no problems here.
So you'd translate the japanese sutairu as style, despite it meaning figure? Loanwords can and often do mean something slightly different.
It even fits おもしろい perfectly, with its own origin.
drôle (adj) - funny, peculiar
droll adjective \ˈdrōl\ - having an odd and amusing quality
Meant to write 面白い
Droll tends to have negative connotations. More like boring or bland. The most common usage of it is to describe someone as being droll, and its not a compliment.
>Not of English origin
That's it I'm watching HS thanks a lot Daiz. If both are going to not translate things I may as well go with the fast option. Next he's going to use bon appétit for いただきます.
The subtitle is wrong because it would only be droll if Underwater subbed it in 8-bit....
Inserting random French into a poorly written anime to make it seem more complex is pretty pretentious.
You do realize that French words are used in Anglo-Saxon areas whenever people want to show off their vocabulary? Not to mention the French alternative is often used on a common basis. Take pork chop for example. If you were to say swine chop you'd sound like the undereducated troglodyte you are.
Sensei is an English word and therefore wrong to translate it. Same with manga.
Droll is the best option here.
The only people who are complaining here will be americunts who don't even know the English language.
shut up nerd
i thought these subs were american english
its beyond belief you think thats an actual excuse.
well, you are right, but still
>the quality of being cute, or items that are cute: even in a cosmopolitan city like Tokyo, kawaii is everywhere.
Why I don't get it it's why Daiz let seppuku be in the script, it just sounds so weird.
THOSE FUCKING FANSUBBERS AND THEIR DRAMATIC BULLSHIT
IF THEY COULD ONLY LEARN TO STOP BEING COMPLETE USELESS CUNTS WE'D STOP FANNING THE FLAMES BY GIVING THEM ONLINE POPULARITY!!!! AAAHHHHH
IM SO MAAAAAAAADDDDD
Most likely he was too tired to think of a brand new word for it. Changed in the batch most likely.
I'm thinking something along the lines of selfy slicey. Sounds coolio enough. Or maybe belly cutton.
True normally, but those connotations are there in French when it's used in the phrase "la vie est drôle".
>Underwater in charge of good translation
No, drôle means weird too.
I'm thinking of godslice.
Japanese, from setsu 'to cut' + fuku 'abdomen'
It must me a mashup of something to do with these.
"Make like a fish and gut yourself".
Yes, it was a grave mistake to leave it as seppuku. We will amend this in the batch and change it to "sudoku".
how about adding a "translator's note: if you're watching this show, you should know what seppuku is, baka."
translator notes fucking everywhere look stupid.
Didn't like belly cutton? I thought it was pretty good. Belly button - belly cutton eh eh? cutton - cutting. But whatevs sudoku it is then.
Underwater/Vivid/FFF/Koi/UTW > Commie >>>>>> HS
ya its late im sorry I should go kill myself
oh boy Daiz is here.
Do you still like us?
whats the subgroup that adds memes to everything?
gg is most notorious for doing that, though Commie gets grief for it too.
Yeah it can also be used as "weird" but the sens here is rather "funny" because in english too "funny" can have a connotation as weird
Wrong way around, buddy.
ya gg thats it. also commie just takes CR subs now so it doesnt matter too much
no, he had it right. commie is one of the worst but at least its better than gg and HS/CR
I was speaking historically. gg is known as the grand old trolls of the anime community. Commie is bashed more for localizations that people hate.
gg literally adds memes and shitposting just for the hell of it, like in >>100033532
commie is just 2nd rate subbers that make mistakes time to time, which is why they mainly rip from CR, like >>100033482 said
ok then post proof that commie continuously injects meme slang into their subs. I want multiple examples, because there is literally 50+ examples of GG doing it.
>not translating it as Kind Dedede Drolling While Eating
>le /v/ is troll
at least it's accurate
Tu es trop drôle mec. Je me marre. :')
At this point I would like to remind you to remember the difference between "translating a meme into a meme" and "inserting a meme where there is none". The former is an entirely valid thing to do (the only thing you can really argue is whether the chosen meme in the translation was the most appropriate one for the case or not) while the latter is just trolling. Commie has cases of both.
you do realize commie typically uses the CR subs, right?
That said Commie is typically the only good option besides HS, and I would much rather use Commie than HS if given the choice.
And because no one can trust whether it is accurate or not without a translation note it should just be left out at all times.
Of course I know that. I was just pointing out that memes have a place in the subs if the original dialogue also has memes, which has happened more than a few times, including in series Commie has done. For example, Steins;Gate was filled with internet memes. Commie did a CR edit for the show, and changed many of the memes that CR used into more fitting ones (most of the time).
Did I ever say Commie good explicitly? No. But seriously would you rather use Commie or HS?
Yeah, but people who complain about "memes" in subs are just being petty.
Oh my sides, jesus.
I'll complain when it's shit like >>100033974 >>100033941 >>100033754 and so on
Isn't that an actual term from GitS
What's so bad about it?
French a shit language.
im not from /b/ or /s4s/
>a shit language
That really makes no sense.
then tell me whats so not bad about it?
It's funny. If I'm watching something and then something like >>100033974 pops up I'll laugh and it's enjoyable.
then you would fit in well over at /b/ or /s4s/. /b/ even has anime threads from time to time.
Yes it is, anon is just being fucktarded as usual.
So I shouldn't enjoy my chinese cartoons, and should go to /b/.
That's just silly.
over at /b/ there are a lot of people like you. over here there are a lot of people that absolutely hate your fucking guts.
Wait, you're saying that people here hate my guts because I enjoy my chinese cartoons, right? You should also fix your capitalization. At any rate, you can stay mad for all I care.
Neptunia was fucking great.
You fucking idiots.
Underwater translated what Satsuki says. Trigger fucked up the translation, not the translators.
I would >commie at this, but on a second listen that's actually what is said.
Now let's make a thread for every sentence translated awkwardly from Japanese or German, or misused English in anime.
I hate you because you think memes are anything more than in jokes. You probably spout them in public.
That's not even a proper assumption.
Your low level language is basically french in inferior version, you stupid cunt.
English is a bastard mishmash of latinate and germanic. Its got 20 rules for every word, and every single rule has exceptions. Its crazy.
Only native speakers think it's difficlt. It's rather easy to learn actually.
Not to mention HorribleSubs. I don't think I need to go into why /a/ hates them.
The only good subgroup is Coalgirls.
Come on, this is what made the OP for me.
Its not that its hard to learn, its that its hard to learn well.
only because you can get every word in a sentence wrong and still be understood
>inferior version of french
Backwards sentences, make, you can. It sounds strange, but people can understand it.
English is stupid.
Kill la /v/
you mean versatile and dynamic
no wonder we conquered the world while the continentfags were still shitting all over themselves with petty wars
you should Kill la Urself amirite? xD
Versatile and dynamic =/= smart
Being able to mangle the words and still get the point across does not a good language make.
Hlel, we can eevn hvae all the ltetres out of oderr and you can siltl raed it.
I thought that was the joke OP made, but reading through the thread confused the hell out of me.
tahts a realtviley cool apscet of egnilsh toguhh, elsingh has mnay samll lttile qiurks to it I tinhk. deosn't mkae it a good lnauggae but it mkaes it a cool one.
Jdcsluiiouy. Hrad to raed taht one eh?
No, it's easy to learn, in any way, one of the easiest languages.
The problem is the pronunciation, it's almost impossible to get it right in a lifetime if you don't learn it very early or are a native speaker, human tongues don't work that way
I'm picturing some nip trying to follow this conversation and crying.
As I said, english is stupid
You know as well as any of us that if they didn't translate drôle into droll this same exact thread would've been made about that instead.
stop trying to ruin my language daiz.
This seems appropriate. She's making a wry, sardonic comment.
