Are you ready for Urobuchi to win an Oscar?
>>
I hope it does win. The original series was way better but Rebellion was still better than anything else that aired this year.
>>
I really don't see them picking Madoka over "it's totally different from that other anime-stuff" Ghibli.
>>
Oh, was it officially nominated?
>>
>>100021473
What's Madoka running against? If Frozen is on the ticket it probably won't stand a chance.
>>
Miyazaki should've waited to announce his "un-retirement." He should've done it the day after they give him the Oscar
>>
>>100021677
Still a few days before official nominations released
>>
>>100021715
According to http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2013-11-05/wind-rises-madoka-magica-momo-submitted-for-oscar-nominations Frozen has also been submitted for an Oscar nomination.
>>
Honestly, I'm not even being biased when I say Madoka deserves to win over all the other trash that has been nominated.
>>

Reddit figured out why they even submitted Madoka for nomination when it has no chance of winning.

>In any year in which 8 to 12 animated features are released in Los Angeles County, either 2 or 3 motion pictures may be nominated. In any year in which 13 to 15 films are released, a maximum of 4 motion pictures may be nominated. In any year in which 16 or more animated features are released, a maximum of 5 motion pictures may be nominated.
>Madoka is tied to Aniplex, which are a subsidiary of Sony. That is why it is even on the list.
>Without Madoka, there would have been only 15 films and thus only 4 slots. Madoka being nominated brought it up to 16 and increasing the nomination slots to 5
>The whole reason they are pushing for it to be considered for nomination is so that there are more nomination slots overall, and then the Sony produced "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2" has a higher chance of getting nominated.

tl;dr jews jewing japanese jews for a slightly improved chance of getting their jewish movie getting a jew nomination for a jew award which will improve their sales

>>
Wind rises and Frozen will be nominated for sure.

no hope for muhdoka
>>
>>100021969
Because you've definitely seen The Wind Rises, right?

Honestly despite 90% of those computer animated pieces of shit on there Madoka doesn't stand a chance. If even a single person on the voting team bothers researching the source material or even watching it, they'll still be drowned out by Disneytards / Pixartards / Dreamworkshills. That it even made the ticket is the most recognition it will get.
>>
>>100021715
Well it still has to make it into nomination.

Frozen is a shoo-in and then there's Despicable Me 2 and Monsters University. It's also up against Ghibli's "The Wind Rises".

If they're going to nominate anything from Japan, it's probably going to be Ghibli, because they are treated completely differently from all other types of anime and the film is a stand-alone.

When Miyazaki anounced he was retiring, Madoka had zero chance, now that he has revoked that claim, it still probably just doesn't have a chance unIess they somehow nominated both. Though if by some miracle that happens and they actually snub one of the American films, I'd eat my sock.

>>
>>100022532
Is that as in /b/ or as in /v/?
>>
The only reason Madoka Rebellion deserves an oscar would be for the incredible production. The story and character development were not memorable enough, and although the story is "mature", it isn't in the way that would appeal to western audiences. It's too niche for the academy, who have shit taste anyways.

Imagine how much less the night would mean for them, because they would be unable to keep their minds off of the strange anime shit that was dropped on top of them.
>>
>>100021473
He won't win.

Even if he deserves it (haven't seen the movie so I couldn't say) he won't win.

The awards are geared (unsurprisingly) towards American productions, and the only way a foreign animated film would have a shot is if it achieved a certain measure of success in American theaters. Miyazaki can sometimes sneak away the award, but he's got Disney backing him and his buddy John Lasseter to promote him. A "Nobody" like Urobuchi would probably never even be nominated, let alone win, even if he directed the Greatest Animated Feature Of All Time.

>But he's not a nobody!

Yeah, not in Japan and not to us. We don't matter though. I'd bet not even 1% of the Academy's heard his name.

Frozen will win only because Pixar's still trying to fulfil the terms of acquirement from Disney by making a certain number of sequels to their most popular franchises - thus why we got Monsters U.

80-some theatres in US/CA. Its actual oversea gross isn't much in the grand scheme of things (only about #25 for her opening weekend), but per-screen-average was fairly high. Overall it probably grossed over half a million dollar or so oversea.

Box office results for an independently distributed film are spotty at best, so the usual places are not reliable. Still, the bar is not very high, so Rebellion did well enough to be the best non-Ghibli anime film opener since 2004, and best non-Ghibli Japanese film since 2005 in the US box office.
