Well, at least until Kaiji.

He seemed like a badass dude in the episodes before that, but at that point you knew. He was fucking insane.

Actually, the main difference between Akagi and Washizu is that Akagi's nuts, and Washizu's senile.
>>
Fake rage, fake words, fake fights. I'm sick of them. They're nothing but a joke, and they'll never be enough to satisfy me.
>>
>>10002060

Akagi's not really nuts, he's just got a rationality so profound it seems irrational to us. He's on a totally different mental level from most other people.
>>
>>10002060
What about the time Washizu was thought to have possessed by a demon when he held the winning tile that would've drained all of Akagi's blood?
>>10002185
I agree. Since Akagi is beyond everyone else's reach, he resorts to self-destruction since no one will ever understand him.
>>
>>10002261

The whole self-destruction thing is just his form of entertainment. It's not a cheap thrill, he doesn't feel alive outside of gambling his life. And his unique skills allow him to survive to gamble again - self preservation in a sense.
>>
>>10002281
Yes. He was always a thrill-seeker. Even at the end of his life, he always thought life was just a game.
