I just finished the Suruga Monkey arc of Bakemonogatari, and was wondering if anyone could clarify exactly what went down.
>>
op here, most of my confusion comes from the last episode of the arc.
>>
Araragi made her want to fuck him.
>>
Senshougahara came around and was all like "it's ok i'm not gay like you are but you're my bestest friend no homo" and then she stopped attacking araragi and all was right in the world
>>
It's pretty straightforward. How about you actually explain what confused you?
>>
The demon was fulfilling her desire to kill Araragi. Senjougahara popped up and threatened to kill Kanbaru if it happened. The demon didn't want its host dying before it could consume her, so it was left in a no-win position and gave up.
>>
What's important is how easily Senjougahara was able to solve the problem. Araragi going in and getting his ass beat was nothing but pointless heroism on his part that had no real goal. This is important for his character arc.

Although this is /a/, so all of the monogatari discussion is "best girl" or "lolshaft"

I think it would help me if I knew what Sugaru's third wish was, and what the whole point of their fight was.
>>
Crab went in, said "hands off my man or I'll shoot you, bitch", Niggers are allergic to bullets, exorcism complete.

Best girl is crab.

The fight was just Kanbaru trying to help Senjougahara, but unlike Araragi, she was scared off by the stapler threats. Kanbaru initially said that her wish was to be with Senjougahara, and the "Monkey's paw" was distorting it into "kill Araragi." In reality, her jealousy was directed at Araragi in the first place and her wish was to kill him (similar to how her wish was to hurt all of the runners in elementary, contrary to what she tried to tell Araragi).
>>
>>100016027
Basically, I've been subscribing to this theory

""If one plan was to defeat the devil and make her hidden wish unable to be fulfilled" and another plan to reveal to Senjougahara that Kanbaru really wanted to kill me" "Making it impossible for the wish she showed to be fulfilled" "What's more, Senjougahara swore before the devil's eyes that she would kill Kanbaru if I were killed" "Without the devil knowing it would have not worked""
>>
>>100016392
>Sugaru
Heh.
>>
>>100016392

It was obviously 'I wish for a penis and Hitagi to be my futa-cock-loving slut.'

Or it would have been for Hitagi to love her. You choose.
>>

There was no point to the fight. Araragi is useless. A recurring theme this season his how he wants to fix things, but ultimately he's too self-centered to be of any use. Instead of attacking the cause of the problem, he throws himself at the problem itself without any regard for his own safety (and usually can't do anything to help in the first place).

His fight with Kanbaru is a good example. He had no way of dealing with it, so he just jumped in head-first and figured he'd end up finding a way to "defeat" it. Araragi's short-term problem solving is a major theme next season, too.

They make it a point that Kanbaru's wish wasn't something as pure as "I want to be together with Senjougahara," it was actually "I want to kill the guy who's dating her." She just claimed that the demon hand was distorting her wish so that she wouldn't need to admit that.
>>
>>100016955
Hm, the way I see it now, is that the demon arm only manifests when the wish is in the process of being granted, additionally, each wish has two layers, the external and internal. If the wish is fulfilled, the devil arm goes away (this seemed to be the case with the first wish), but ultimately tallys Kanbaru closer to losing her soul. I think Araragi's intent was to grant her second wish, so to settle things by sacrificing himself, I feel like that's been a huge theme as well.
>>
>>100017069
It's more that the former was the conscious wish, while the latter was the unconscious, "true" wish.
>>
>>100017069
I was under the impression that the Rainy Devil was acting out the id of her wish that she was refuting. If she truly wanted Ragi dead more than she actually wanted Gahara she wouldn't be bros with him like she currently is.
>>
>>100017128
>the demon arm only manifests when the wish is in the process of being granted
It hijacks Suruga's body to fulfill the wish, yes.

>If the wish is fulfilled, the devil arm goes away (this seemed to be the case with the first wish), but ultimately tallys Kanbaru closer to losing her soul.
Yes.

>I think Araragi's intent was to grant her second wish
His intent was to prove to the rainy devil that it could not fulfill its contract, i.e. kill Koyomi.

>I feel like that's been a huge theme as well.
The show's unifying theme is one of what it means to save someone, yes.

What if the two sides of the wish aren't explicitly to black and white, as in, one happens, one doesnt, what if the true one happens, to make the intended one come true? By killing her competitors, she technically got faster, and by killing Araragi, she could theoretically get with Gahara
>>
>>100017362
>By killing her competitors, she technically got faster, and by killing Araragi, she could theoretically get with Gahara
Yeah, that's the whole point.
>>
op here, I think I got the closure I needed, thanks for the discussion guys.

Not related to Suruga Monkey arc, but about the last arc. Can someone explain the ending? Why was Shinobu in Araragi's shadow? How'd he know she was there?
>>
>>100018284
>Why was Shinobu in Araragi's shadow?
Because she's a vampire and his servant (of sorts).

>How'd he know she was there?
He? Do you mean Black Hanekawa? Meme probably told her, or maybe she smelt Shinobu, being a bakeneko and all. We don't know for sure.
>>
>>100018514
No, how did Araragi know Shinobu was there when he called for her?
>>
>>100018627
He didn't.
>>
>>100018658
Then why'd he call for her?
>>
>>100018708
To save him.
>>
>>100018776
I'm just getting more confused by the minute...
>>
>>100018822
Koyomi called out to Shinobu to save him, having been prompted to do so by Black Hanekawa. However, this doesn't mean he actually knew she was in the immediate vicinity - she was just out there somewhere, as far as he knew. He called out to Shinobu specifically because she's the one with the power to actually challenge Black Hanekawa.
>>
>>100018822
Also, don't abuse ellipses.
>>
>>100018822
Remember that bit about apparitions wanting to be treated like apparitions. By making a desperate prayer to her, he had just acknowledged her as a vampire instead of a child. She was lurking there waiting to see if he'd do that.

Black Hanekawa felt Shinobu in the area, which is why pushed Araragi into calling for her.
>>
>>100018284
>Why was Shinobu in Araragi's shadow?
She was at Mr. Donut and jumped in when Araragi went there looking for her after Mayoi said she saw her there. (by the way, make a mental note of these scene for future reference)
>>
>>100016392
She still not use the third wish.
>>
>>100019000
>>100019205
>>100019336
Thanks, this scene is a lot clearer now.

Forgive me
