I thought the story was he was trying to make nice looking games but because of the trash modeling they looked like haunted animatronics instead of improving his modeling/animation skills he built a game around the critique.

That’s what I meant. Instead of trying to improve his skills based on the criticism to make what he originally wanted, he decides to stay on that skill level. To me, I see it as sort of giving up and selling ineptitude. All of his models look like animatronics so he just makes animatronics now.
