What kind of job do you want to get?
Big movie vfx studio? Small indie games? Own company? Freelancer?

What position, what specifications?
Specialist or generalist?
Art or technical?

Where are you now and where do you want to end in 5/10/20 years?
How do you protect yourself against being replaced by cheap, Asian friends and what will you do when AI generator overlords will create all the 3D assets from simple, verbal descriptions in 10 years?
>>

probably an hero, cause every position I've applied to in the last 18 months had like 50-200 other applicants.
When I looked at some portfolios I'm not sure I'm among the top 10%, but I need to be top 2% to even have a chance.

Everyone and their mother have years of work experience in big projects.
Not sure how I can even survive coming from an art school, without having to do two years of free internship just to be on a semi comparable level.
But I can't even find free internship position atm.

In hindsight I should have worked like 12 hours a day for two years instead of studying as the university required (I even did some extra courses just for the sake of it)
Did some additional learning and hobby projects along the way.
Not enough.
Not even for unpaid positions.

I just want to get gud. I'm modeled low poly "block" models, but I just can't figure out how to move forward, especially trying to learn softbody character modeling.
>>
I'm just working on my own cgi film on my free time and hopefully it'll get me some money and fame one day

de-transition and / or KMS

im graphic designer and lately im learning motion design, after effects adobe animate etc, 3d can be a something that can be added to this kind of projects,
almost completely lost faith in making it as a "pure" 3d artist

seriously? I feel completely overwhelmed just imagining how much I'd have to learn.
ffs!
I just wanted to make cool 3D units, weapons and levels, not become some kind of renaissance man just to get food on the table.

>hopefully it'll get me some money and fame one day
got any WIP screenshots?
>>
>>710275
I feel you man, but apparently you need to be one army man to not be failure in digital media, if i knew that years ago I'd just fucking draw cute girls eventually get following of faithful coomers and cash that patreon gold
>>

My plan is to do 3D purely for fun and recreation. Now I feel like I dodged a bullet by not going into that field 19 years ago (I always wanted to do VFX-filled short films as a teenager, stuffed with spaceships, digital creatures and flashy effects).

Instead I drifted some years after school and finally studied aerospace engineering from 2003 to 2007.

Having a family sometime would be nice...
>>
>>710282
Nice cope if you started 19 years ago you'd be making six figures with the experience and skill...
>>
>>710292
Not guaranteed. I'm making six figures now after 12 years plus money isn't everything for me. Job satisfaction is more important. It's also nice to be in a job with practical applications, but 3D will be my hobby for a long time.

Not trying to model anime grils or shitty spaceships and instead focusing on the nitty gritty side of VFX that isn't as popular with the weebs and porn fags. Learning Maya and Houdini etc. focusing on large scale simulations. I live somewhere with a small population where the industry is top level so it shouldn't be hard to slide into a job in the film industry.
>>
>>710300
Forget it unless you bring some unique talent to the table. Everyday butter and bread VFX is firmly in the hand of Indian, Singaporean, Taiwanese and Chinese studios.

Nice try Chang but thats bullshit. Some of the top VFX houses in the world are not based in asia. I'll do just fine with my solid skill set, degree, industry connections, and government mandate to hire local talent in my country.
>>
>>710305
>I'll do just fine
literally everyone in the world said this at some point in their life, and majority of people failed in pursuing their dream career
>>
>>710310
As did plenty of the people who didn't fail. Whats your point?
>>
I'm currently making 6 figures as a 3D generalist freelancer and only been in the industry 3 years. Plenty of people out there making boatloads of money, but it's not about the money. just make ur stuff not suck. best way is to post it here cuz people will tear ur work apart no matter how good u think it is.

I'm planning on making a VR game thats better than reality so people dont leave. then I'll enslave the human race
>>
>>710317
sounds like delusions of grandeur to cope with short coming in real life.
>>
I want to make tuts on YouTube and make at least 100k/year
>>
>>710342
just be a beautiful young woman and have big tits. ezpz.
>>
>>710260
I'm currently reading books on persuasion and rhetoric.
I'm going to talk myself into a 250k salary managing artists without touching a computer.
>>
>>710337
Enslaving the human race might be a delusion but i really do make 6 figures. I helped design the avengers end game logo and Disney pays a lot
>>
>>710260
I wanted to animate...
Not sure if this will be needed in a few years due to AI. See: >>710420

>>

Gonna do it as a hobby.
The concept of 3d modeling sounds great and I enjoy doing it, but job prospects are horrible.
>>
I am gonna work soon for a military company doing 3D visualizations.
Good pay - sane work-hours - moderately easy job.

I haven't redone my website in 2 years so there's a lot of outdated crap and stuff i haven't put there yet. Gonna redo it next year after my short film is out

You will have to make better hardware and software for that to work.

Fucking blendlets.

Yeah I use blender. And I'm pretty good at it. And I've managed to make tons of money using it. What's it to you? Let's see your non blender portfolio
