I followed a tutorial to make a fire ring/space explosion thing. I think I searched for a "supernova explosion" effect. If memory doesn't fail me, it was done on Blender. I was 15 or 16 years old, and it's been 15 years since. I didn't do anything else 3D related until about one year and a half ago.

>>671285PS. I searched a bit, and I can't be sure whether this is the tutorial I followed, but the result looked very much like it. https://web.archive.org/web/20050305055244/http://www.elysiun.com/tutorials.php?id=5

Tried to make a city for a class project. I had to make a title sequence and I picked Ghost in the Shell (this was years before the movie). I used ghosttown in 3DS Max, but I had so little experience rendering and lighting, and the render took so much time, I had to compensate by post processing the shit out of the render in AE.I with I still had the result somewhere

>>671381Of course not. This was created by Turner Whitted in 1980 as proof-of-concept for recursive ray tracing. Rendered on a monstrous DEC PDP-1.The same on a stock Amiga 2000 would take you an hour or so and significantly less with some CPU accelerator installed.

>>671283The very first thing I made was a greek pantheon in a blender course I paid for like 7 years ago. I remember being proud of it, I even printed it on paper (and lost it a few days after). Funnily enough, the professor teached us with a version of blender that was already ancient during that time and recommended us to not use the latest version. I did find that last version confusing and ended up dropping 3d modelling all together when I didnt find the version I had during the classes. It took me 4-5 years to pick up 3d modelling again and it was thanks to an awesome judy hopps rig for blender which pushed me to learn a LOT more 3d stuff and blender.

>>671283First THING? Was a material for someone else's model that I got from a free 3d model site. No, scratch that... A horrible gladius in 3ds max 2011
Depends on your definition of first thing and 3d program. I started out making maps in the source engine when I was 13 or 14. The first map I made which I never textured was a really stupid giant paintball arena that never actually got any cover placed but you could escape the arena and go into the stands and snipe people from very disproportionate seats. After that I probably followed two Maya or 3ds max tutorials but never actually got anywhere, I think one was from those tornado twin fucks that made those unity tutorials and now making the Bible game. I also sculpted some retarded "head" from some cool web app from 2013. The first project I ever finished was the blender guru doughnut shit. Honestly I'm a pathetic excuse for a modeler, just a game programmer, and only visit this board because it's the default board that opens when I use clover.
>>671283Would have been around '85 when I was in college. First would have been a simple scene with a bunch of primitives, probably on a checker board plane. First model would have been a very crude human head. We only did 3D for a single week of our computer graphics class. We also did 2D animation on some old Icon computers. Then a few years later I had this software for my Atari ST that let you set chrome balls inside a cube and assign images to all the sides of the cube. Never did any 3D professionally until about 2006 when I was hired by a studio as an art monkey. Given a week's training on Maya and then set to task making 3D props for use in animations. Days spent doing things like cranking our shelves, chairs, tables, mugs, cups, glasses, bottles, etc. etc. Nothing complex just simple models so that the real modellers could concentrate on more complex things. Very boring job. Studio when tits up before even producing the pilot episode for the series they were making. The first thing I made with it was an oil drum, crate, pallet, and a bunch of glass coke styled bottles. Then didn't do any 3D until 2012 when I started using Daz Studio and Hexagon. That's when I really got into 3D and started to really enjoy making models. Amazing how much more fun it is when you're modelling the stuff you want to make instead of making dull props for someone else. Started getting more software making more complex stuff, having fun.Pic is the oldest render I made on that Atari ST.
>>679027Also, it took my Atari an hour to make that render. You could animate the balls too, up to 24 frames (which would take an entire day to render). People used to stack the balls together to make figures and have them do things like bounce a ball or play catch.
>>671283Probably around 1998, got a burnt cd with 3D Studio Max R3 from a friend. Built this muscular human arm out of all primitives, intersecting scaled spheres and capsules and went "ok now how do I fuse these into a smooth continuous surface?".Nowdays I sometimes build things like that, focusing all on shape and volume combining all the crap into one mesh and just retopologize the resulting surface into something useful, I like to think I was ahead of my time.
>>679058>"ok now how do I fuse these into a smooth continuous surface?"This is what the MetaReyes plugin was for back in the day. Build your object with metashapes, press button, get continuous mesh, rig with biped & physiqueTo be honest, max was not very good at cleanly deforming continuous mesh at the time, animating characters in Softimage or then new Maya was so much better.
>>679091Lol that takes me back to modeling a crude vagina with Raydream Studio’s shitty meatballs. Then proceeded to whack it to my render. Good times.
>>679193To be fair Raydream was entry/hobbyist level stuff. That plugin alone was probably more expensive.

Instead, a variety of angles occur; some form of parallel projection, such as dimetric projection with a 2:1 pixel ratio, is the most common."
