We can make 2D art look 3D, but is there a way to make 3D art look 2D while still keeping 3D aspects. So something like this, but with 3D model.

yes, that's how modern anime is made

I assume so. South Park is made in Maya, for example.

I was trying to figure out how they did it but I think you need a programming team and stuff as this kind of software is barely ever used.

It's projection mapping, but the simple kind. You get lots of errors and stretching if you go off axis too far, but I guess it's good enough for whatever people make these.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhGjCzxJV3E&

this is definitely worth watching to see how stupidly in depth it can get, they talk about how they need to manually edit normals on faces so light hits it the way it would in a drawing. there's plenty of tricks and ways to do it but I've never seen something that's blown my mind when I found out it was actually 3d. closest I've got to that is from that video

You mean right.
>>
>>674371
How do you make every pixel sample only once in a binary way like this? So you get that look like it's been drawn with a 100% hardness brush in a painting software.

I tried replicating the effect in stuff like Maya Hardware 2.0 renderer, but it softens the edges very noticeably on lower resolutions, even with AA turned off. It's like it's filtering the textures and the effect bleeds over onto the edges.
>>
>>674465
I'd probably export the render in several different passes and come up with some solution in post/compositing. I'll have to look into that.
>>

>>674465
I don't think you actually CAN; your easiest option to get a similar effect would be to paint lines where you want the colors to end, so cleanup'll be easier and faster

...at least, that's how Dystopia Story says they do it for the muscle dudes. For the females he does pic related
(Render with soft shadows, posterize/palletize, and color)
>>
>>674769
Nice to see this technique is still used.
>>
>>674371
Maybe posterize it. Use a fixed number of set colors. Could be done in post.
>>
>>674465
You do it in real time, and then export that image in some sense.
So point filtering, along with rendering at a lower resolution. At least that's how I'd go about it.

So maybe you'd do this outside of Maya, or successfully fiddle around with rendering settings.
>>
>>674465
>>674786
Pt.2
Note that raytracing settings might also "denoise" the image. Most modern raytrace renderers do this to some extent. So again, to get rid of the fluff, makes sense to go real time.
Or you could trace after a render in something like Graphics Gale.
>>
>>674465
Yeah don't
Just export it to UE/Unity and turn off AA. Maya won't let you properly get down to actual AA.
>>
>>669833

Oh shit, nigga. Das how the pros do it? You're lewd posting was legitimately informative, Anon.
>>
>>675884
If you train your eye on the mesh, you can see the discontinuities on the shaded version. The waist in particular requires a bit more of attention.
>>
>>675884
What's so special about that? We did that all the time in the 90s because continuous meshes often deformed like shit. It's just all about cleverly hiding intersections and seams.
>>
>>675882
as stated on his deviant art he drew over the 3d frames so its actually 2d...
>>
>>675989
It counts as a hybrid technique. I'd like to see him do that without the 3D model reference.
>>
>>670674
how do you make those?
so that it gives the impression that the camera is locked to the ass

>>675989
For better or worse, it comes across as 3D. Since he essentially just did a tracing job with colors, all the consistensies of the keyframe animation and volume of the mesh as things like legs and breasts make the transition between mediums unscathed. In my opinion, there's also too many frames of animation and again, they all have the same level of consistent quality, as the 3D mesh does.

It's hard to explain, but this is 2D in name only. It looks good but the most flattering thing you could say about it is that it looks like shading arcsys would make.
>>
>>676094
as things like legs and breasts move and rotate
>>
>>674465

>>675003

Yes you can.
Toon shader /hard lighting + crisp textures should do the trick as long as you render through playblasts instead of with the default renderer.
>>
>>675854
That's different though. Kind of weird to sexualize her but eh. What is ironic however is making a fictional female gamer with no personality besides being female the mascot of your movement to prove how much you don't hate women and then jerking off to pictures of her with zero self awareness.
