I started my first model today, basically as complex as pic related. holy fuck why didn't you guys tell me this shit takes so long? how long does it take you to finish one of these?

I'm using Blender btw

He's not OP, I am OP. This whole site needs IDs.

I can't post my model because it's on my other computer and I'm not getting up right now. How long does it usually take you guys to complete models like this?
>>
>>668313
> This whole site needs IDs.
not understanding the chans

> I can't post my mod-
okay, i no longer care.
>>
>>668313
Imagine taking the time to make a model and taking the time to make a thread asking for help and not even being willing to get your fat ass up to help the conversation YOU STARTED. Maybe it's taking forever because you're doing everything wrong, but it's probably taking forever because your fucking mouse is so crammed with cheeto dust none of your clicks work.
>>
>>668315
based anon
>>
>>668315
I'll post it in the morning. This board is slow as shit so no worries.

I'm not done with the model yet either anon, still working on it.

Also I'm not fat, thanks

>>668314
/biz/ has IDs, I see no reason why all boards shouldn't as well
>>
>>668318
Because otherwise, newfags like you would be filtered out.
Which is a good thing in our case, but in yours I guess it'd be bad.
>>
>>668296
My guess is model like that would probably take a pro 5 hours max in zbrush, than another few hours to retopo.

Hi guys i'm the real OP and here's the model I was referring to.

I'm glad I decided to make a thread specifically for my model and to not post it until 15 hours after the fact. I was feeling like a fatass and didn't want to get up and contribute to what I started because I didn't want to.

I hope you guys can see the details of my model from the picture I took from my phone of my computer. If only there were some way I could take a screencap of my screen!

I'm also sorry because I can't seem to figure out how this 4channel website works. I wish it could be a lot more like reddit because it's just a lot easier for me.

If you guys like my model please upvote this post thanks!!

Invert your normals and cut down how many verts you have. Always start with a low number

I'm going to assume you are modeling this shit face by face. Don't do that, it should be like sculpting, you block in large forms and silhouette and maybe lay out some loops of how you want things to subdivide which will be difficult until you're experienced. Then merge your forms depending on its real world construction and material assignment. Honestly in this day and age if its not hard surface or requiring precision I would use zbrush and retopo in Maya by hand in a day/2 days depending on complexity or use wrap 3 or something. You should always have as little edge loops and crap to work with as possible so editing your overall form is easy until you need it. Also I don't know about blender but lattice deformers are your friend.
>>
>>668457
50% of that is retarded bull, especially the sculpting part.
>>
>>668458
I might have minced my words explaining how you should block in vehicles and environments roughly but definitely not for organic surfaces. If you're modeling characters and you're not in some crap low budget ass studio you'll probably get a base mesh and sculpt that into the likeness/character your art director and lead want in zbrush. You can't make changes and iterations fast enough with traditional modeling. You block in your overall form and shapes, do a very quick remesh and reproject if needed so that you can move large forms easily and aren't fighting the topology. Then go through iterations with your leads/art director etc, finally 'finish' the sculpt, and retopo it properly so you can uv it without retarded spiral edgeloops, and so your rigger doesn't kick your ass. Most likely having to repeat the process a number of times because there will always be changes.

nothing wrong with blender itself, it's a very solid application for an open source
people don't like newfriends especially if they use blender that's all there is, it's just memes
if you want to make something nice out of your endeavours you might want to
0. don't start with complex shapes first
1: learn blender interface first
2: learn basics and some tricks of subdiv modelling next, practice a bit
3. make your model applying knowledge you found

can you give me some specific advice relevant to my model? not just "dude go study basics for 3 years". I will, but I also have a project with deadlines.
>>
>>668553
It won't help you if you don't know what you're doing and why.
There's nothing we can say to help you with that model. You're doing it wrong, and you don't have the skills yet to do it right.
It's not trying to be mean, it's fact. You don't know how to make the shapes you're trying to make, so you're trying to bruteforce it poly by poly. Which leads to it looking like it does now.

It shouldn't take you 3 years to learn the basics, only a week or two at most. That's why they're the basics. If they take you 3 years, I'm afraid you might be retarded. In any case, it's better start with a foundation so you don't fuck up later when you realize you've been doing everything wrong, and give up because you can't be bothered to learn it right.
>>
>>668568
this is literally how the videos I watched told me to do it, extruding by face and edge
>>
>>668553
>i don't know how to do anything
>better take on a project with deadlines!!
Idiot. If it isn't some self-imposed deadline, go tell your "client" you overestimated your abilities and you can't do it now.
Or you could deliver a shit product and look even worse.

I have fuck all knowledge on 3d modeling but I'd assume you guys would be tech savvy. why on Earth would you take screen shots from a mobile phone?

Post it to imgur or something if you're worried about a ban.

>>
>>668569

You are watching the wrong videos.

Block out your shape, then add detail. Please link your so-called tutorial video that taught you how to model so far. It's hard to believe one like that exists
>>
>>669696
> Block out your shape, then add detail.
not that anon, but should i be blocking out with primitives (for proportions maybe)? or do you mean more like, box modeling but low poly
>>
>>669716
Box model.
Extrude, add loop cuts, mess around with verts.
Block the shit out.
Work from low detail to high detail. Get as close as you can to what you need with as little geometry as possible, then add a bit more and get closer, a little bit more and push it closer still. Eventually you'll reach a point where you're satisfied.

It's like the sketching forms, and then drawing final lines on top, then finally shading.
Step by step.

pretty much what >>669719 said.

I made this in like two mins using that simple technique
>>
>>668569
Always start with the lowest possible poly-count, and keep it as low as possible, utilizing (but never applying) the sub-surface modifier. Use "Mark Sharp" and "Mark Crease" on edges to hold deformation.

I recommend doing a few higher end tutorials, youtube is good but there's so many different people there you can't be sure you're learning the wrong method.

CGCookie is a good place to start.
