I'm going to assume you are modeling this shit face by face. Don't do that, it should be like sculpting, you block in large forms and silhouette and maybe lay out some loops of how you want things to subdivide which will be difficult until you're experienced. Then merge your forms depending on its real world construction and material assignment. Honestly in this day and age if its not hard surface or requiring precision I would use zbrush and retopo in Maya by hand in a day/2 days depending on complexity or use wrap 3 or something. You should always have as little edge loops and crap to work with as possible so editing your overall form is easy until you need it. Also I don't know about blender but lattice deformers are your friend.

If you're modeling characters and you're not in some crap low budget ass studio you'll probably get a base mesh and sculpt that into the likeness/character your art director and lead want in zbrush. You can't make changes and iterations fast enough with traditional modeling. You block in your overall form and shapes, do a very quick remesh and reproject if needed so that you can move large forms easily and aren't fighting the topology. Then go through iterations with your leads/art director etc, finally 'finish' the sculpt, and retopo it properly so you can uv it without retarded spiral edgeloops, and so your rigger doesn't kick your ass. Most likely having to repeat the process a number of times because there will always be changes.
