I noticed most of you guys model from different softwares. In my 3D class at my community college we mainly used maya. Is maya a good program for modeling? Also how did Square make the models from FFXV?

We mainly use a mixture of paint3d here.

We use fucking Pov-Ray.
FUCKING. POV-RAY.

o boi I hope your maya is at least 2016.5+

Maya is good for modelling. Knowing both max and maya I personally prefer max's modelling but it's not like it's a difference in capability.
It's more like the difference between having a good tool and having a nice tool.

From the people I know who have used various software consensus seem to be Modo has the best poly tools out there.
The main thing here is you need to rif yourself of the idea that having the best tools is gonna make you the best craftsman, doesn't work like that at all.

Zbrush first, then to Maya.

blender is still the best

I call bullshit. Sure, a computer graphics course that teaches the concepts, of course. But if you have courses that teach actual 3D modeling using POV-Ray, you're just lying.

It's probably a cheap ass community college that couldn't afford to pay the licensing fee of a real renderer and using Maya student edition in their labs/cowshed.
>>
>>657288
the only real renderer out there is cycles, everything else is beta
>>
>>657307
>cycles is a fully fledged renderer
>can't even do efficient caustics because "uhhh it was built for animayshun in the first place why it need good caustics xDDD"
Yikes, even though I use Cycles I wouldn't agree with you on that.

I get a free 2018 version for two years since I'm a student

I went with Maya because I figured there's a shitload of tutorials and documentation for when I can't do something :>

Whatever gets your job done.

free*

*everything you make is property of autodesk

Maybe they are using OpenSCAD for modeling.
>>
>>657314
good. latest versions have really improved modelling toolset. still quite inferior to specialized stuff like modo or max, but it's more than enough for your everyday needs and some plugins out there even fix this inferiority, once you bump into it.
>>658638
what a bunch of nonsense.
everything you make under student license is yours.
you are not allowed to use it commercially and even this restriction is mostly on paper, if autodesk wanted to really follow this police they would watermark fbx export or pull out the foundry, they don't, their strategy is different and their reps even explicitly stated to use student version "until you have enough money to buy proper version".
