I tried Blender for the past two weeks after using Maya for years. I bought a new gpu for cycles rendering.

Unfortunately, the software is years behind maya. Yes, its faster in the viewport, but the UI and interaction is still shit. The animation is a joke. I am going to have to try and download and render with renderman (free) on the CPU and use my GPU in engine stuff and sweet sweet Fortnite. It wont be nearly as fast as the GPU, but at least I'll have some result.

Tell me friends, will I be able to use my GPU with a NVIDIA denoiser to get those sweet sweet render times? Can I do this all with the Non Commercial license?

Yes. RenderMan uses OptiX, doesn't it? In any case, you can wait until RenderMan XPU, which is expected to release during 2019.

Yes can use optix. You can also use the gpu for caching geometry. Renderman 22 is actually pretty fucking fast. Its not redshift fast but it looks loads better and has a much better shading toolset. I actually find it much quicker to get the look nailed in renderman than redshift. YMMV.

How does renderman handle volumetric lighting like pic related? Is it easy to set up? This is a dealbreaker, pic related is cycles

I think it's built off Optix, but it not Nvidia's denoiser, it's Pixars. Either way Renderman has an amazing denoiser, final frame quality and it requires an Nvidia card to use.

Pressing N or selecting Denoise in the Maya IT does nothing for me. Absolutely no change and still noise. How do I enable it? Its not working on cpu or gpu despite me adding

Try actual batch, not batch preview.
They should all be in the location where your workspace settings is set to put images. If you haven't started using the Renderman docs I highly encourage you to. It's really deep software.

I used to read books on prman, before it was a full raytracer. Then I used 3delight which was reyes, because prman had no student version and i was/am deadly poor. I used to write my own shaders in rsl. Now I'm just finding a workflow, I dont know if this will even be fast enough. I'm looking at redshift, but its not cracked fully on CGP. AOVs have watermarks.

Turns out maya has failed me to the point of me being so disgusted with it i'll never use it again even with prman. I modelled a spaceship for like 3 -4 hours today, concepting and building it up in maya with extrusions. Then I must have extruded too much and I got the case where you have extrusions on top of invisible extrusions and no amount of mesh cleanup would save anything. All my work was unusable.

I am going back to 2.79 and unity. At least I'll have modelling tools that dont eat your meshes. Thanks for nothing, maya.

That sucks. I take it you tried merging verts with 0.0 distance? I know it's not what you want to hear but it will go a ton faster the second time around and it will give you a chance to refine things so it will probably look better too. Don't give up.

The modeling toolkit is just there for quickly accessing tools hidden in menus. It's good for beginners, but all of these tools can quickly be accessed with pie menus.

Maya is still very good at modeling, it has tools 3ds max doesn't have, but Max also has tools Maya doesn't have. I think Max's hard surface modeling tools are more refined, but I hate it's workflow and I get things done 10 times as fast in Maya.

Marking menus are good but you really need to bind keyboard shortcuts for things like extrude, merge, edge cut. Maya's defaults are an absolute joke.


Also everyone saying "Blender sucks without add-ons" must have never tried Maya. Vanilla Maya vs Custom Maya is night and day.
