I tried Blender for the past two weeks after using Maya for years. I bought a new gpu for cycles rendering.Unfortunately, the software is years behind maya. Yes, its faster in the viewport, but the UI and interaction is still shit. The animation is a joke. I am going to have to try and download and render with renderman (free) on the CPU and use my GPU in engine stuff and sweet sweet Fortnite. It wont be nearly as fast as the GPU, but at least I'll have some result.Tell me friends, will I be able to use my GPU with a NVIDIA denoiser to get those sweet sweet render times? Can I do this all with the Non Commercial license?
>>656614>Can I do this all with the Non Commercial license?Yes. RenderMan uses OptiX, doesn't it? In any case, you can wait until RenderMan XPU, which is expected to release during 2019.
>>656614>>656626Also, if you will be using Maya, I suggest looking into Redshift and Octane.
>>656614Yes can use optix. You can also use the gpu for caching geometry. Renderman 22 is actually pretty fucking fast. Its not redshift fast but it looks loads better and has a much better shading toolset. I actually find it much quicker to get the look nailed in renderman than redshift. YMMV.
How does renderman handle volumetric lighting like pic related? Is it easy to set up? This is a dealbreaker, pic related is cycles
>>656626Renderman has a custom denoiser with far better results than the shitty OptiX denoiser, actually usable for final frame renders.
>>656668does it use optix or not, m8?
>>656614Does Non Commercial Renderman for Maya have any restrictions in functionality compared to the commercial version ?
>>656668>>656677I think it's built off Optix, but it not Nvidia's denoiser, it's Pixars. Either way Renderman has an amazing denoiser, final frame quality and it requires an Nvidia card to use. >>656681Non-Commercial RenderManRenderMan is free for all non-commercial purposes, including evaluations, education, research, and personal projects. The non-commercial version of RenderMan is fully functional without watermark or limitation, all you need to do is use the "rendered with RenderMan" logo in your credits.Your forum account entitles you to 2 node-locked licenses which expire every 120 days. Upon expiration, you will get a notification to renew your license online which will renew your license for another 120 days. For further details please refer to Pixar's Non-Commercial RenderMan FAQ below. https://renderman.pixar.com/intro
>>656634tell me about the volumetric lighting support, friends. This is like a 30 second or less setup in blender. Can maya and the mighty renderman even do the same?
>>656721Get RenderMan and go nuts. https://rmanwiki.pixar.com/display/REN/PxrVolume
>>656683>I think it's built off Optix, but it not Nvidia's denoiser, it's Pixars. Either way Renderman has an amazing denoiser, final frame quality and it requires an Nvidia card to use.Pressing N or selecting Denoise in the Maya IT does nothing for me. Absolutely no change and still noise. How do I enable it? Its not working on cpu or gpu despite me adding >"gpuIndex": 0, to default.filter.json
>>656744I have no idea about MayaLT. Are you sure MayaLT fully supports 3rd party renderers?
>>656744I'm using full maya 2018
>>656748my bad, misread that. You have to batch render for denoise to work. make sure it's enabled in the AOV's
>>656750>make sure it's enabled in the AOV'show?
>>656754search the docs online for 'denoiser' they got pictures and everything!
>>656754where does the batch preview AOV get saved to lad? I batch it and my render completes, but cant view it in IT
>>656756Try actual batch, not batch preview. They should all be in the location where your workspace settings is set to put images. If you haven't started using the Renderman docs I highly encourage you to. It's really deep software.
>>656758I used to read books on prman, before it was a full raytracer. Then I used 3delight which was reyes, because prman had no student version and i was/am deadly poor. I used to write my own shaders in rsl. Now I'm just finding a workflow, I dont know if this will even be fast enough. I'm looking at redshift, but its not cracked fully on CGP. AOVs have watermarks. Are you ok with this being the general non commercial renderman help thread for noobs, anon? Or do you want to play it different?
Now for example I create a little animation, go to render settings and set it for 10 frames, go to Renderman->batch render and i get the Local Queue popup but I get 10 images of the same thing. My timeline didnt move either while I was rendering. What it do?
>>656759Hope I didn't come off rude, I wasn't meaning too.You sound a lot like me. It's ok we if do general help stuff here no guarantee I will be 100% able to help with it all. I am a RIS noob too.
>>656761I got it to work. Long story short, i am an idiot. The denoising is working in IPR too heh
Turns out maya has failed me to the point of me being so disgusted with it i'll never use it again even with prman. I modelled a spaceship for like 3 -4 hours today, concepting and building it up in maya with extrusions. Then I must have extruded too much and I got the case where you have extrusions on top of invisible extrusions and no amount of mesh cleanup would save anything. All my work was unusable.I am going back to 2.79 and unity. At least I'll have modelling tools that dont eat your meshes. Thanks for nothing, maya.
>>656817>extrusions on top of invisible extrusionsLearn to model properly, and don't blame it on the software.
>>656817That sucks. I take it you tried merging verts with 0.0 distance? I know it's not what you want to hear but it will go a ton faster the second time around and it will give you a chance to refine things so it will probably look better too. Don't give up.
you are just bad, there is nothing wrong with admitting it
>>656840Blender is a better modeller, just like modo
>>656878As a Maya user I agree, Blender is really good at modeling.
>>656878>>656942but what about the modeling toolkit? i thought that was max-tier.
>>656981The modeling toolkit is just there for quickly accessing tools hidden in menus. It's good for beginners, but all of these tools can quickly be accessed with pie menus.Maya is still very good at modeling, it has tools 3ds max doesn't have, but Max also has tools Maya doesn't have. I think Max's hard surface modeling tools are more refined, but I hate it's workflow and I get things done 10 times as fast in Maya.
Why do people still talk about cycles? I was a big fan and it was going places, but 2.8 and Eevee are here.
>>656998Marking menus are good but you really need to bind keyboard shortcuts for things like extrude, merge, edge cut. Maya's defaults are an absolute joke. Also everyone saying "Blender sucks without add-ons" must have never tried Maya. Vanilla Maya vs Custom Maya is night and day.
>>658204Apples to oranges.
>>658206How so? Eevee renders volumetric in real time flawlessly.
instant render in viewport
>>658209Eevee won't get you perfect results
>>658209Eevee like videogames or Unreal Engine, Cycles Raytracing.
>>658204Eevee's good for realtime, but you can't really use it for pre-rendered stuff.
>>660949sure you can. Kiddos wont notice
>>658211That's very far from the quality of volumetric off-line rendering.
