What is the absolute best maya beginner tutorial for someone that knows nothing about 3d. How long a day should I be watching/learning?

It's lacking in so many aspects. Bad UV tools, bad retopo tools, bad compatibility with game engines, animation sucks, it's so rough in almost every aspect that blendlets have to rely on third party addons to make it better. And then, they try to shove their software down everyone's throats and sell it as the second coming of jesus christ. If these devs decided to stop developping these addons, blendlets would be screwed.

So what's wrong with blender? It's rough and lacking, but it can be as bad as it wants since it's free. What's REALLY wrong about blender is it's delusional userbase who, for the most part, don't have the required skill level to need Maya's complex and advanced tools.

Do you even know what you're talking about? "Filmic" is a look, it doesn't change the render output, only the way you see it. And you can apply it outside of Blender through OCIO.

Plus, as others said, even unbiased render engines are not 99.9% accurate. They all take shortcuts, otherwise you wouldn't be able to render in reasonable timeframes.

One that teaches you how to use the interface and navigate around the viewport. Then you look up a tutorial specific to what you want to make. If you don't know what you want to make yet, then it's not wise to just look up tutorials at random.

As much as you can stomach. That could be just a few minutes or a few hours. It's good to do something in-software every day though, no matter how small. Reddit has a nice daily 3D challenge based around a theme that's good for getting feedback and practice.

That still doesn't change the fact that Cycles is a bottom tier render, slightly above C4d's and Lightwaves internal render. Arnold, Renderman, Vray, Octane, Redshift wipe the floor with it in terms of functionality and end result.

Every fucking Hollywood (and non-hollywood) movie is choke full of animations made in Maya, Blender is absent in this market because even if you are a god with it, it doesn't reach the level of quality needed for doing real business with it.
