Having a fast reliable tool boosted my daily work confidence into trying more difficult things. I had more hours to refine designs/models in 3D knowing I’d need less time to actually render that geometry and still have something to show to the client before going to bed. Now as I started to rely more and more on a GPU rendering I contacted Sebastian Michalski (aka Smicha for Octane users), a wizard who built my new machine. The rig is also a dual Xeon system, but its true power lies in a water-cooled 7x GTX 1080. Sebastian built/assembled the system as well as did all the necessary customization to the videocards, motherboard, the cooling system, etc. All I had to do was to fill in the distilled water under Sebastian’s kind supervision when I received the computer. The first Octane render tests showed an incredible speed and I guess I can finally start using PMC and Path Tracing
>>654202Depends on what you plan to render. GPU renderers are fast for sure. However they don't excel in quality in all areas. No renderer does. With a GPU renderer you need to pay closer attention to resource usage as you may not be able to render your scene if you can't fit it in memory. Redshift is better than all others in this category as it can use system memory if needed, it's slows things down a lot though.Renderman 22 has made some incredible progress in speed, since it's free to try it's worth evaluating.

I had a shitty GPU with only 2 gigs of VRAM and Redshift didn't render my scenes while Octane and Cycles had no problems with it.I also think Octane looks better than Redshift. Just turn those things on. Octane basically doesn't support displacement maps, volumetrics, or anything where you need advanced control. It's fine for rendering subdivision donuts if that's all you need. The plugin pricing scheme is an absolute joke.
You can buy a used Windows 7 HP laptop from someone's office and as long as it has an intel chipset family you can probably do everything you need to do on that fine. It will be fast although the only slowdown will be if you're doing making your maps in gimp or photoshop at the same time, those will run slow if they're at the same time as Blender or Maya or 3DS Max or whatever you use. Otherwise find a gtx 160ti and an i5 and sped $150 on the rest and you're probably be fine in regards to speed.
Do not buy a laptop, and if you do i'd only buy a dell precision with a i7 4core/8 thread cpu because normal laptops are not made to handle the heat. something like a m4800 can be bought for $500usd with 16Gb of ram, i7 and a SSD hard drive (a must have)But That would be a wast of money because for about $800 you could build a desk top with a ryzen 2600 which is a 6 core 12 thread cpu, and a RX 580 gpu with 8Gb of vram and 16GB of system ram https://pcpartpicker.com/list/bW88w6
for rendering intel cpu's are a wast of money because a 9600k 6core/6thread that cost $270 will lose to a $160 ryzen 2600 6core/12thread. Intel is for gaming but you need cores and threads for rendering and AMD ryzen wins hands down. For the price of a 6c/6 thread intel 9600k you could buy a 8 core / 16 thread ryzen 2700 ($280 for the non X) There are one or two garbage programs that don't utilize multi thread but like adobe but OP asked about 3d rendering so no excuse to buy intel, its just a wast of money
Graphic cards are a little more tricky to pick out for 3d rendering because the specific 3d program matter because some programs like Blender can use openGL/CL which is need for AMD GPU's but other programs only support Cuda so only Nvidia gpu's will work and to further complicate it on the programs that support both openCL/cuda some favor one over the other for no particular reason. And to add another layer of complication there can be a huge performance difference between Pro cards like Quadros compared to gaming cards like GTX 1070 or a Vega 56 but only in some programs. Since OP asked about cheap cards and rendering i'm going to assume Anon is asking about Blender because there is nothing cheap about Maya or the feature is disabled on the free version... plus donuts in the OP so...In Blender the best budget cards is with out a doubt the AMD RX 580, you can get a used one for $130 and it has 8GB of Vram which is important and in rendering it performance is closer to a GTX 1070 (rather then its gaming counterpart the gtx 1060) this is because the Nvidia strips down the compute portion of the gpu on gaming cards because its not utilized in GAMING but AMD has overkill compute performance which is why bit coin miners went crazy over AMD cards.
