It's the true and tested way for optimally conveying any given artistic vision. Everything else is just less efficient, and therefore a failure from a business standpoint. While it's true you won't be many reference images, orthographics, isometics, etc in artbooks and officially released media, I think it's more likely that kind of art is probably considered too technical, and less artistic than 'look and feel' concept art. There is a lot of concept art that just never sees the light of day due to NDAs and other reasons. Given the time and money that major companies spend on productions, I find it very unlikely they would releases something without an artist coming up with a high detailed version everyone checks off on. For a client, or freelance? Sure you would probably be composing as you go along, but with bigger projects they'll be sitcklers for you to stick to the approved vision. For example every nook, cranny and Panel line of Gipsy Danger was all decided in the designs before it was handed to the artists for Pacific Rim. It all depends on the project, company, etc. But in terms of hobbyists, or beginners, they absolutely should use orthographics starting out. Eventually skilled artists don't even need image planes, but I would argue it's essential for beginners to use high res references on image planes. But yeah, eventually to grow, an artist needs to broaden out, which is why I don't have a problem with people posting model sheets for animation, and comics in these threads, even though they aren't as clear as orthographics, once someone has enough skill they will be able to make a model from references like these.
