I really liked the part of Dark Souls 2 where you enter the fight against Looking Glass Knight, but given that it was in a 2014 PS3 game that certainly didn't push for fancy graphics (fair enough imo) it didn't look quite as aesthetically pleasing as it could have considering how other games and movies have done rain.

So I was wondering about the best looking CG rain you've ever seen or made. Show me so I can feel bad that I'm only good at programming and not any good with more artistic things.

I've been wondering how the rain was done in Detroit: Become Human. Since that game is very character focused, there are plenty of emo scenes where it's in the rain (and also where characters have huge tears rolling down their cheeks). It's done pretty well, you can see individual drops roll down the face and it gradually becoming more wet rather than just transitioning to a low-roughness material. I can only think of it as some kind of animated wetmap, but I wonder how said wetmap was animated. Do you just bake some kind of rain sim?

eh. it's about design, one of the main aspects of graphics, is overall design of world. then comes high res textures and topology.
you can have fanciest textures, polycount and resolutions, but if it has medicore design, it will be uninspiring, blend thing. take Crysis for example, people were stocked about it's graphics, it was a benchmark.. but does anyone remember any scene? bit everyone remembers MGS 3 last boss fight. thats why Mirror Knight is memorable fight. from soft klnows their design )

Scholar of the first sin on PC even used Direct3D v11 so it could use some pretty advanced effects, Dont know the the PS3 version compares, though

I'm not trying to call it bad, just not as good as rain is in games where they clearly focused on making the rain look good. Usually racing sims do the fanciest job of it.
