Is there a good way to Boolean union two spheres together in Maya 2018? I found a way to combine the cylinders and spheres, but when I try that here it just ends up looking worse.

this is the reason "don't use Booleans" is a rule of thumb.
Because people who haven't learned the fundamentals expect it to act like a silver bullet.
What you want to do is construct the wireframe of the mesh such that edge loops will go out of their way to follow wrinkles and folds. In this case, that means the intersection between the two spheres.

Take a look at the rib section in this image. You can see the edge loops in this wireframe follow the contours of the ribcage.

If you have seen any complete meshes at all, you would trivially know that you don't have to follow contours like this, if all you wanted to do is block out the silhouette as you did in the OP image.

But if you want it to subdivide correctly, or if you need it to all be one mesh, then you're gonna have to follow those contours.
