>Umm excuse me, just where do you think you're going?
>It's crunch time, we need you to work 5 hours overtime UNPAID for the next two weeks.

what do?
>>
>>613199
"You got it boss."
>>
>>613199
Abide by your contract. That is, don’t work overtime without extra pay and within the limits imposed by law.

At least that’s how it works in the EU. Not sure if you can say “no” to your master in the USA.
>>
>>613199
"Hahahahhahaha no either you pay me for my time or I will be sitting here with my thumb so far up my ass I will be able to play thumb wars with my own tonsels"

you have a baby and take state mandated leave for pregnant women

you are female, right?

Looks like we found the lazy, ungrateful ones.
You're getting paid for a HOBBY, show some appreciation.

>getting paid for a hobby
Since when is my career a hobby?
>>
>>613241
are you an animator?
>>
>>613240
That’s unprofessional, disrespectful, and factually wrong.

*picks coat and walks towards the office’s exit*

See you all tomorrow, peeps.
>>
>>613208
If you're in the EU, you might not be familiar with At Will Employment. Look that up, and be horrified.
>>
>>613208
>ot sure if you can say “no” to your master in the USA.
Not if you're the unfortunate bastards who had to work on Sausage Party. The fear of being out and out blacklisted from the industry probably "helped".
>>
>>613199
Is this real in the industry, I use to work at Walmart and when ever i did overtime they paid me 16/hr normally i got paid 11/hr.
>>
>>613257
its more true for archviz and vr, not for triple A stuff
>>
>>613257
In Indie studios its very common, firstly, there's an element of shame (due to comradery, as your co-workers are also friends who you don't want to let down). Secondly you are more passionate about the project and its failure or success is very personal to you, so you willingly work unpaid to make it a success.

As for AAA studios I only worked in one for 8 months but it was paid overtime, most of us stuck around after work for a couple more hours and goofed off if I'm honest. Very unproductive and it makes you wonder why they bother, just a sea of yawns. Here you feel like a cog in the machine and not passionate about the project.

When I first got in the industry I took part in crunch time but it's really not worth it, a lot of young men mistake their career for their entire life, they wanna 'make their boss proud' as if hes their mother/father. I got quite deep into Jordan Petersons lectures and wanted more from life, now I never do overtime and rather come home and do my own work, gym, nice meal with family. Simple things like this are better than stressing yourself out for an entertainment product.

No repercussions so far, just have to put your foot down and don't bullshit your boss. I have a friend who actually felt ashamed to NOT do overtime, because he would go home and 'play video games instead'. I told him it's YOUR life dude, you can go do whatever you like once the work day is over, no one's forcing you to do shit!

Sorry if it was a little long, but in conclusion imo crunch time is more an element of shame / guilt-tripping than actual necessity. Companies should be planning effectively rather than doing everything last minute! We can't encourage this behavior.
>>
>>613266
Is a crunch always avoidable?
>>
>>613199
Thank my lucky stars I do this as a hobby and decided that the industry is shit.
>>
>>613199
Have them say that word again, "need." Then I'd go home and fuck my wife.
>>
Is the 3D industry really this bad? The things I've been reading on /3/ seem to always talk about how bad it is and non-viable as a career and it worries me.
>>
>>614830
honestly it’s all true, but if you make yourself informed and you work hard to make sure you don’t fall into the same pitfalls, you can go further than you’d expect.
>>
>>614830
It's 100% true what everyone says, everyone's a backstabbing shit talking asshole and overtime sucks ass..

At least my company reimburses £10 ($14) for 'overtime' food.
>>
>>613199

Who are you and why are you yelling at me? I'm self employed bitch.
>>
>>614830
Not only do you get treated like shit, but you'll be making the same pay as some entry level shits even once you've climbed the ladder quite a bit.
>>
Better read this first boss.

And just so you know. Firing me would be a bad idea. I just found out today I'm a Gender Fluidkin. I'd hate to be discriminated against because of my gender and species.
>>
>>614830
Ok hear me out. This happens, but only if you LET it happen.

The young men who pursue 3D are beta virgins with no spine who cuck out for their boss because they're afraid of authority. Refute me I don't give a shit but this is reality plain and simple.

if the company doesnt pay for overtime, usually you'll be inclined to do it as part of the team effort and they may provide you with pizza and beer and shit, and after the project is over, you'll get some paid free time. its not 100% fair, but its not as worse as you put it

personally my overtime is paid and I'm not forced to do it, I just choose to because I value the quality of the visuals we put out
>>

Can you be blacklisted by people who made a movie called Sausage Party? That sounds like hocus pocus.
>>
Well, since you're getting paid for your hobby and it's pretty damn hard to actually find a job in the industry, I'd say you do it. Don't wanna lose your job over not working overtime, now do you? Besides, you should've know this would happen before applying to the job.
>>
>>615630
That's a good point
How do blacklists work? Do people in charge of hiring just ctrl-f your name in some sjw Excel sheet or something?
If it's just your name there with no explanation I imagine they would laugh if you told them it was due to sausage party
>>
>>615631
Why do assholes always say this? Why is having a job in any art field considered getting paid for a hobby? If some guy loves programming in his free time and then gets a job as a developer, why don't you say to him he is getting paid as a hobby as well?
>>
>>615631
>since you're getting paid
Exactly, i am getting paid for the hours i work, if you don't pay the overtime, i am not working, simple as that.
Even if you would pay the overtime, i am not doing unhealthy stuff like working for 12 hours.
That's an unholy thing i would eventually do one time in half a year IF you where a nice boss who threats me like a human being (and pays a nice bonus for overtime)

>>615634
You answered your own question.
They are assholes.
And they think they can get away with it.
>>
>>613199
>unpaid
Say that again so i can record it for court please
Uh oh im sorry what?
So I guess I can go now? Or will you sign an official overtime ticket?
>>
This is why I always carry a recorder with me while at work.
>>
>>613199
You telling me or asking me?
Asking? Dude, I'm on it.
Telling? Fucking pay me. No, in advance. NO! Golden time in advance! No? Oh, lookit that, I got another offer. bye.

"You're fired."

EU people have a lot more to worry about today. Between Muslim crime claiming entire countries, to Donald Trump being the only president to realize that Europe in its entirety has literally nothing to offer America, meaning if Trump shuts down free trade, Europe gets flushed down the toilet, and America remains completely unaffected.

>>

1- you wont get fired for refusing
2- being mature and confident doesnt imply doing it or not doing it, but more doing what's right and/or compromise in the circumstances
3- telling your boss to fuck off doesnt show maturity nor confidence
4- nobody does it without thinking twice, there are conditions, assumptions, and compensations when doing overtime/crunch

stop shitposting like everyone else

In Europe you're not even allowed to comply to this.

As far as I know (for Spain), you can comply, but you can _at the same time_ denounce it, and the fact that you complied won't be held against you.

Good luck getting a job.

My friend got sexually harassed for months and went to HR and got fired. Applied for the place I work out and I found out later she got blacklisted and was not hired.

Now she works in some dead end college teaching people Maya.

She didn't even go to court.

Yeah maybe you can win the lawsuit but try and get another job you will get rejected.
>>
>>616363
>She didn't even go to court.
That's one problem right there. It's easy to say in retrospect, yeah, but if sexual harassment happens, acquire proof and then go to court.

Everybody does this, and blacklists will then only have the names of abusers.
>>
>>616374

You would just get blacklisted harder.

We was going to hire a decent female character artist and she took an employee to court for that same issue and she got rejected because of that.

Why would you hire someone who could take you to court and end up costing the studio a lot of money?

>>616301

Lets be honest here. Artist are replaceable and they have limited fields of work. You maybe could do this if your a programmer since if your fired you have 10 other people phoning you for job offers.

Imagine you was a programmer at ubisoft you get fired, you can potentially work for google or some bank. However, if your an artist who works for ubisoft get blacklisted, then what can you possible do maybe artviz?

The only other choice is probably teaching or working at starbucks.

Employees can be really picky.

If your getting 1,000 of applications for one position you gonna reject people for any redflags.
>>
>>616382
>Why would you hire someone who could take you to court and end up costing the studio a lot of money?
Well, I don't harass employees, nor try to cheat them out their well-deserved money, so that's not an issue.
>>
>>616363
>Was sexually harassed
>Didn't go to court

Sure, I am 100% certain she is not lying :)
>>
>>616382
>Why would you hire someone who will actually report your abuse to the police?
>>
>>616382
>Lets be honest here. Artist are replaceable and they have limited fields of work. You maybe could do this if your a programmer since if your fired you have 10 other people phoning you for job offers.
Guy who doesn't program, do art or even actually have a job alert.
>>
>>613199

If it's crunch time that means they literally can't afford to be short staffed at all. They can't fire you or they'll fall even farther behind on their deadline and even hiring someone new it will cost them too long to bring them up to speed on the project than it would cost to pay you over time.

Crunch time? No problem,
Need me to work overtime? I'm your man.
Not gonna pay you? Go fuck yourself. You can't afford to fire me this close to deadline with this much work left to do.

This is a situation where labour has management by the balls.
>>
>>616425
I sexually harassed a few women in my time (only light harassment, shit was so cash), and no one reported me ever to the police.
>>
>>616500
I think the reason for that is people think that if they report it they'll end up fired jobless and unable to land another job.
Basically shitheads are creating bad work environments.
Then faggots are just allowing it to happen because they're too much of a pussy to say no to their boss.
>>
>>616490
The problem wouldn't exist in the first place if management had a fucking clue. But, management in these environments usually have no concept of the skillsets involved in this industry. This is why shit gets fucked. This is why creators get shit on.
>>
>>616590
management is a bunch of guys trying to cut costs.
so its best for them to hire fresh-out-of-college guy to do most of the work
>>
>>616624

Well back then studio execs were just dopes in suits.
>>
>>613199
Don't be this much of a cuck to sign up for a job like this.
Just make blender furry porn with much less skill, hours, and higher pay.
>>
>>616624
Hey man, wetnaps.
>>
>>613199
Only if you're unpaid as well.
