Don’t confuse the two meanings of “free”. To comply with Blender’s license all they must do is grant you the plugin’s code under GPL terms, but they may charge you for access to the binary.

You can, of course, edit and redistribute that paid-for code (and binary) as you wish.

If they are licensed under the GPL*, then yes, if you are the receiver of such a licensed work, you are free to do with it as stated by the GPL, which includes modification and further distribution, even charging for distribution (reasonably) or for support.

*I believe they must be, provided they build their entire functionality upon Blender. Some plugins avoid this by acting as a bridge between Blender and another program (such as an external renderer) – in this case, the exporter plugin is subject to GPL, but the external program doesn’t have to.

I'm doing effects with Blender, there is literally no reason to use anything else any more. I have heard of rumors that one of the biggest post production house in the world has converted to using Blender. I can't tell more than this though.

I think this is really cool. I don't see why people need to be angry that "blendlets" get this kind of addon free. It's a neat addition to Blender, a much needed one at that (have experience with native simulations - they aren't that great). This will not replace Houdini at all. Companies that have already made their own scripts and add-ons for established pipelines of simulations will not just switch over to Blender. Blender would need a complete overhaul to make companies consider doing that. However, to be fair, if this add-on is capable of making some of the more common simulations work well, namely mud, water, food liquids like drinks, maybe lava and whatnot, than it would certainly close the gap just a little bit.
