Hi fellas,

I'm on a videogame masters, learning a bit about everything around the sector and I especially loved game design and 3D modelling. I have a basic knowledge of Max, and I've done very simple stuff, but I've come to a point in which I no longer have 3D classes and I don't know how to follow-up.

I've looked some tutorials, but they are not so great, and I'm looking for increasingly difficult stuff I could do to keep on practicing and practicing to improve, especially on organic modelling. Would you be so kind to guide me on a good direction, where to find models to try and suck on doing but learn a lot?

If you're willing to switch to Maya (every concept you learned in max can be applied to Maya, or C4D, or Modo, or Blender) the pirate Gnomon's DVDs.
I've thought about that, specially with the free trial in pluralsight. Are those tutorials really worth the time and effort? I mean, ofc I know they will have a good quality but, won't it be detrimental to only learn through tutorials instead of trial and error?

I mean, I could follow tutorials like there is no tomorrow, but would'nt it better to pick, IDK, three easy models and try and try until I make it? But, truth be told, I'd be lost as hell while trying them
You'll probably just learn bad habits. It's best to learn by following and once you get through the tutorial, you could try recreating the model by yourself or choosing something similar and modeling it for practice. Follow tons of tutorials, that's how I did it as well.

There was a big list of different YT channels somewhere but I can't find it now. Anyway, depending on if you want to start with 3ds Max, Blender or something else, good starting points would be:

do both, and draw from a large pool of tutorial authors. you need some tutorials in the beginning to set you on the right track, but after that feel free to just experiment.
i can't recommend anything specifically because i don't know your skill level, but other anons have recommended some good general sources already.
Thank you both, I've saved all these choices. I'll try to follow then some tutorials and see where that leads me. My level right now is just a basic understanding of the interface, a bit of environmental modelling and very basic organic modelling. Rigging and animation, I know the very basics, but those two are a whole world apart, and learning those will be a lot harder, especially making those animations count.,

Yes. This guys is a real professional with a great workflow and decent teaching skills.

Pretty much the epitome of bad workflows. inb4 the easy hate on Blender, I've been doing 3D professionally for 10 years now and I can guarantee you that this channel often shares "knowledge" that is either very dated, wrong, or even flat out retarded. So beware.

real shit, if you want to get better, make environment replicas of real areas and then tweak them for game level design.
then make characters to go in those areas.
then make interactive assets.
then make decor.

then network code it for multiplayer and find a texture artist.
they will be able to help you make your game land really shine.

your only need in 3d for game design is simple stuff. you will require sculpting knowledge after you have your basic 3d game functioning.
the texture artist will help you with that.
Well, list some things you think he does in a bad way. I've learned from tons of different artists and I didn't notice anything off or very different in his techniques from the rest of them. Okay, there may be a couple of things that could be done more efficiently, but everyone does some things differently and there was nothing particularly wrong with them. Honestly, he was the tutor that I learned from the most in the beginning. I started with Arrimus and he teaches great techniques very in-depth, but BlenderGuru has some theory videos and his way of explanation really helped me understand the fundamentals and 3D as a whole. The only problem I have with him that resulting renders of his tutorials are mostly pretty shitty. It shouldn't matter that much because you are mainly learning the program through them, but the only decent one was the Mars tutorial render.

It's been a few months since I browsed BlunderGugu's channel so I don't recall anything specifically, but I remember being mindblown by the amount of things or principles that were wrong in various videos. There was one about rendering covering the topics of color management, gamma, color mapping, clamping, etc. that was particularly off the rails by a million miles. All I'm saying is to be careful with that sort of nonsense and also check more reliable sources whenever possible.
No OP here, but what about MODO? Is that a good program to use as well?
I remember a tutorial about LuxRender years ago where he made metal pots in a kitchen.
He used a glossy material (basically plastic) and cranked up the specular color to the max (causes fireflies like hell).
There's even a dedicated metal material in lux.

But that was long ago and I guess he didn't want to take the time to learn the engine properly, he just wanted to have a tutorial about lux on his site.

Yeah, but he has intro to hard surface modeling and it is available for free on vimeo, while you can find a few of the videos on youtube, too. It's pretty basic and kinda similar to Arrimus, although he probably won't teach how to use the basic operations.
yeah you're right, well the principles are for beginners but he doesn't go through stuff like hotkeys and settings and whatnot
