Met this jap dude (cat girl in the middle) in vrchat who made his own character model. I asked him how he learned and he said he used a book called "low poly super technique" https://www.amazon.co.jp/%E3%83%AD%E3%83%BC%E3%83%9D%E3%83%AA-%E3%82%B9%E3%83%BC%E3%83%91%E3%83%BC%E3%83%86%E3%82%AF%E3%83%8B%E3%83%83%E3%82%AF-ntny/dp/4797347376

Thought id make this thread to gage some interest on the topic of low poly modeling and vrchat.
>>
wtf is that link
>>

I highly recommend the books from the Super Technique / スーパーテクニック series, buying them since 2005. The series covers all major 2D and 3D packages. Basic japanese reading abilities are recommended.
>>
>>600932
You mean the letters and percent signs? It's referring to the Japanese characters used in the title of the book being sold. If you go to the link, you'll notice in the address bar that it looks different. If you copy it and then paste it back 4chan, it turns into that.
>>

And yet CGpeers gets 20 more worthless tutorials about making fart gas in Houdini daily.

basically, but since I've been studying the language for a good couple years I feel like I could translate it if I got a hold of a copy. I'm going to order the one in OP and try my luck. It's got really good reviews for being 9 years old.
>>
Could anyone share something about that book? Some tips, pictures or just explain what does it generally talk about that is so special and great and that you can't learn from a million other sources?
>>
>>600912
Might anyone recommend some form of English equivalent for this book?
>>
while We are on the subject,

Might anyone recommend any really thorough, definitive books for learning Blender. I'm primarily interested in Blender for Game Dev. I use online tutorials all the time, but love a good book to look at when I'm off the computer.

Thanks

>All this valuable information that we'll never learn because Jap books are hard as fuck to pirate for some reason

This got me so fucking peeved last anime thread we had. I searched PD for days and didn't find shit besides blender smut and western sculpting tutorials. I followed one of the blender guides in Maya despite not really knowing a lick of jap either and it was surprisingly easy, the guides are very visual so as long as you know your basic tools, you can do the guides.

If most of the books I was interested in were in kindle format, I have 12000yen burning a hole in my wallet and I'd buy some of them to dump on sadpanda. Having most of them be in nothing but paperback just means they'll take almost two months to get here.
>>
>>600952
nigga this book is like 7 dollars
>>
>>600952
Just buy it, cheap cunt. This is one of the cheaper books from the スーパーテクニック series.
>>
>>600952

Houdini is GOAT you faggor.
Speaking about cgpeers there like 2 blander books for qt moe character modeling:
>Blender 3Dキャラクター メイキング・テクニック
>東北ずん子で覚える! アニメキャラクターモデリング

Wish there were more tho
>>
>>601091

Do people in here actually know how to read Japanese? Or do they just use the pictures to follow along?
>>
>>601443
The guides in these books tend to be very visual so it's easy to follow along by just the pictures. Obviously the ratio of people who know Japanese in this board is maybe close to 1%, and the only reason it's not lower is because there's already a deathly small number of people who browse /3/ on a regular basis.

It feels weird on my end. I got into it and started to pick up modeling again because of how horrible MMD models are. I see people decimate entire objects instead of breaking it down to lower it a bit and then fix it up by hand.

I actually had one guy bitch at me saying my model clearly had too many tris, thinking I was in the range of 45-50k, when I'm sitting at 17 since I changed everything by hand.

Jesus people are dumb.

Also, meanwhile I found a Chinese blog that routinely makes models that are probably under 5000 poly that look better than most ripped models at a tiny fraction of their resources. And this is without any additional maps.
>>
>>601596
I'm seeing a hell of a lot of tri's in that pic.

When is it safe to use tri's? I thought you were supposed to stay away from them at all cost?

>I'm literally dying of solitude and isolation here
How? You're a white gaijin, that makes you a celebrity. If you can speak a little japanese, that makes you a SUPER TALENTED celebrity.
>>
>>601598
Quads are two tris side by side, all models are made of tris, game engines convert all quads to tris, tris are more optimal / efficient than quads (the goal of low poly) but do not subdivide nicely (irrelevant for lowpoly) and do not animate or "deform" nicely (joints on that model are quads or tris / poles are arranged so that they will deform correctly for the range of motion of that model, given that it's armored dude).

The vast majority of models you'll come across or will be asked to prepare for VRchat come rigged or with an armature already. I did a couple for free for a friend of mine since I was interested in the process, the first one took some three hours and the second one took substantially less time, so personally I wouldn't have the heart to charge anything more than 15-30 bucks for that kinda work.

Some of the rates going on that VRchat discord are absolutely outrageous though. This friend commented with me that he wanted a custom Rider model so he went there and asked, and he got a reply from a guy who made models out of preset bases like in pic related. The standard rate that guy is asking for, for these cardboard cutout models, is 300 dollars. 300 dollars for something that's already half-ready, has absolutely no texture work (or at most a very simple gradient) and no real extraneous original geometry work.

And there was a big enough market to keep this guy afloat, make of that what you will.
>>
If anyone has a translated version of an anime blender modeling book that would be great.
>>
>>601596
Is there a good guide to getting models that optimized?
>>
>>602127

From that site there is one rough guide which is pretty much standard old blocking out modelling methods:
http://blog.sina.com.cn/s/blog_48d03ba301011st5.html

As for texturing they use a lot of Mirrored UV's and they paint using Viewport canvas in stages. Colors blockout and then refine. 2 examples:
http://blog.sina.com.cn/s/blog_48d03ba30102vxrz.html
http://blog.sina.com.cn/s/blog_48d03ba30102v0vr.html

Another big thing that people miss out with lowpoly on is the technique of using "Geospheres" for round objects or spherical things, armour, ect . They hold a better spherical shape & silhouette at much lower poly than standard Quad spheres and don't "pinch" at the poles.

If you look around for older guides especially from the 1999~2004 era, you can get some very good info on optimization techniques since they had to be as efficient as possible. I also wish the "everything has to be quads at all costs meme" could die since you can even use joints made out of triangles as long as you know what you are doing and fully understand how things work. A good example to look up is the "collapsing triangle" joint for knees and elbows which is lowpoly and efficient at deformation.

While these PDF's give a decent guide on blender basics, it doesn't really teach much in optimization; also what looks like NURBS based workflow.

>>
>>603837
Update, tried a few more websites like honto and yodobashi and they're even worse, you need straight up Jap addresses to register on those websites and registration is mandatory.

Is there a place where I can go to set up a bounty for this? At least one of the books is financially attainable this way, it just so happens that it's almost impossible to do this if you're not Japanese. Like, some place under the radar you can go and request the scan of a book, and if it gets delivered you pay the guy.

They have rules against posting copyrighted material, so there's no way the request would fly. And I'm not willing to risk 65 bucks in the face of *that*.

This is why I meant "under the radar" so I don't have to worry about this coming back to bite me in the ass in the future.
>>
>>603980
>all that H manga on the panda
>all those artbooks from games and the likes

Eh?
>>
>>603984
Listen I dunno, the whole problem is that copyright prevents the books from being sold outside of Japan, and the bounty board rules says you shouldn't post anything that you don't own the copyright to.

So unless I'm interpreting this wrong, it's not smart to make the request.

Alright well, life finds a way and I was able to charge my jp account with some money... here's how the process works for anybody interested:

>buy desired eCard from playasia (very important: it has to be a yen card for amazon.co.jp)
>charge jp amazon account normally
>open up softether and gate into japan itself
>buy your books in online reader format

I'm staring down the checkout page here for a bunch of these books and with credit in my account I *assume* it's smooth sailing from here on out. Since you fucks have been with me throughout this journey I'm giving everyone a pick:

http://www.strawpoll.me/14990032

These are the ones that interested me the most, personally. I can only buy one, the gift cards were more expensive than expected. If you're interested in another one, feel free to post it in the thread and I'll consider it if there's overwhelming support for it. If you have any sort of idea what they're like, before choosing, please consider things like number of illustrations and quality of work files, as that is very important for following along, since the books are all in Japanese.

I'll leave the poll open until tomorrow, this time. After that, I'll try to buy it and if successful, I'll shareX the whole thing and dump it on some folder like another kind anon already did.

Okay, here it is. I converted it to .pdf using calibre but I've never done this sort of thing so I just went with the default options, hopefully it didn't turn out too shitty.

https://www.mdn.co.jp/di/book/3215303003/?page=2&direct=1

All the work files mentioned in the book are in this URL, including some custom interface updates for zBrush 4R8. This will take a few years to download though since you are downloading right from Japan and their capacity seems fairly crappy.

Feel free to put this on CGPeers, I'm also uploading an image sequence rip as I type this in case anybody wants to try putting this in sadpanda (in fact I would prefer sadpanda to CGPeers).

Happy sculpting! I only ask that anons who take up the challenge of following the book share their progress in this thread or something.

Looks like a blob now but one day she'll look purdy just like in the book (hopefully). One thing I don't get is that his lighting setup seems slightly brighter than the default one but there's no explanation on how to set that up.

By the way, for the folks that don't know Japanese, kanjitomo works fast and with pretty much every word in the book. I'm at the beginning of chapter 3-2 and it's really not hard at all to follow, especially with the videos as guidance.

Sorry, I should've clarified: I did the sample pages from this book:

https://www.amazon.co.jp/Blender%E6%A8%99%E6%BA%96%E3%83%86%E3%82%AF%E3%83%8B%E3%83%83%E3%82%AF-%E3%83%AD%E3%83%BC%E3%83%9D%E3%83%AA%E3%82%AD%E3%83%A3%E3%83%A9%E3%82%AF%E3%82%BF%E3%83%BC%E5%88%B6%E4%BD%9C%E3%81%A7%E5%AD%A6%E3%81%B63DCG-%E5%8F%8B-ebook/dp/B01N7U9Q1R/ref=tmm_kin_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=

I wonder if there's a similar step-by-step book but this time teaching character illustration in this art style on a software like SAI or CSP from the ground-up. I'd love to buy and follow that one as well.

Since the rooms aren't a stable way to download files, I uploaded them on to mega as some people requested.

Not sure if I'm willing to comply, but should I upload this to Dropbox? it also means giving me obligations to make a shared folder for everyone here who made models inspired by this book, which made me forced to create Generals/Threads for this..
>>
>>610462
You don't have to keep it up if you don't want to. I think there's enough interest in anime models on this board to warrant an Anime general though.

Just a thread like this but it has like an FAQ with a few things we generally agree on and links to a few resources/references to get folks started, for example the books linked here, a few pinterest posts to do stylized hair on zBrush, Daniel's series of videos, etc.
>>
>>610462
I wouldn't mind it being reuploaded to Dropbox, but i'll still keep the files hosted on Mega.

>>610483
I don't mind keeping the Mega folder up since I don't really use Mega for anything else. I would like to see this thread eventually develop into that and keep adding files onto the folder (like the YouTube links sent by some anons above).
>>
>>601598
>I thought you were supposed to stay away from them at all cost?

Tris don't subdivide well, and can make animating and texturing difficult, depending on their location on the model.

It's the 'tris don't subdivide well' part that causes a lot of people to tell you to avoid them, but if you're not going to be changing the number of subdivisions, you've got nothing to worry about.
>>
>>606591
Thanks for uploading it, anon! I'm coming from Maya and this book is really helping me.

>the hero /3 does not deserve
>>
Not to derail the thread too much (I just don't want to see it die yet), but I was browsing the virtual reality thread on /vg/ out of curiosity and I noticed it's almost all vrchat stuff with anime models on them.

With the advent of vrchat, people have been pouring over and ripping anything that looks even remotely anime from games, a hijilion MMD ready-to-use models surfaced out of nowhere, probably stuff we'd never ever see from bowlroll and with tools that rip 3D models right out of 3DCM, Tupper tutorials and CAT tools it's never been easier to have your own model to waifufag.

What do you guys think of that? Is this kind of model just not special anymore? Should Jap artists (or really any artist at all) be justifiably angry that their models are being converted for use in VRChat, and if reality is a thing, without them even knowing or being notified about it? Personally I think it's pretty messed up, I saw VRChat at first as a positive force to get people interested in creating models of their own waifus in 3D, but as it turns out people seem content with getting an existing model and putting in the bare amount of work on it (at most creating a few visemes and a few cute custom animations in Unity). At that point there is no real homage to the character and the model is just being used as a disposable sleeve on a night out in some rando world.
>>
>>613913
I didn't like the idea of vrchat to begin wih, but if you anon though that all VRChat users are going to make their own models, then I really don't know what to say to you.

It's like how many people make original characters for SFM, or Garry's Mod.

The end users may not anyhing about 3d. Someone may want to be a cute girl and talk to strangers. You cannot expect them to learn all it takes to make your own character. Being on /3/ you should know that.

Now, I would like to know if I made a VRChat character for my friend, is there a way for someone else getting that character just by sharing a room with him, or something.
>>
>>610584
Well, doesn't everything get turned into tris anyway once you stick it in most Game engines?

I remember my first time making a decent model in school. As soon as I stuck it in Unity it went too all tris and I'm looking at my teacher like what an asshole.
>>
>>613950
I didn't expect everyone to do it, but a balance would be nice. Instead it's mostly people ripping and converting and almost nobody making their own.

>Now, I would like to know if I made a VRChat character for my friend, is there a way for someone else getting that character just by sharing a room with him, or something.

After your model is ready for upload, you can just log into his SDK account through Unity and upload it yourself. It will show up on his client.
>>
>>613963
so it sounds like there is a way for oher people to rip models from vrchat.

>>613954
If you model with triangles and add a subsurf it's going to fuck up your topology, because triangulation splits every quad in half to form triangles. When you upload models into game engines, the modifiers get applied, and then they get triangulated.
Your teacher was right if you used subsurface.
>>
>>614007
Ninjaripper intercepts draw calls between the application and the GPU so it's able to rip an astonishingly large number of things.

Not a VRchat specific problem though.
>>
>>614008
So that's the thing. Even if someone works hard on their oc, someone else can rip it.
The incentive is not high.
>>
>>614015
I'm not sure how that makes it better though. People worked hard on their MMD OCs and not OCs, and now they're being used in VRchat by a bunch of recently turned homo anons looking for virtual cummies from futa catgirls(it's about as bad as it sounds).

Maybe some of them have permission but most authors don't want you to modify their models or use them in lewd stuff, so I'm willing to bet most VRchat users don't have permission. At that point there's no justice for authors and VRchat is just one huge cesspool of perverted rippers.
>>
>>614016
I didn't say it's better. The opposite, I was trying o say that there is no incentive for those poor authors to make OCs, because someone is gonna rip them anyway.
>>
>>614047
What I meant is that it doesn't matter in the end if authors have incentives to make things for VRchat or not, because even stuff outside of VRchat is getting ported and used anyway. At that point, it really doesn't matter what medium it was made for, it'll just get used regardless.

What incentives do authors even have to make MMD or anime in models in general then? The problem goes a lot deeper than just the circle of models that may or may not be made with VRchat in mind.
>>
Sincerely thanks to everyone in this thread, its been on of the much better ones lately. Finally a good thread.

>>

The Blender game engine is in a bad state, mostly abandoned for a decade and full of bugs. It's also GPL licensed, which means you'll never be able to sell anything you may be making with it.
Why do you hate yourself to the point of even considering spending your time in the Blender game engine and/or in Blender?
>>
>>614843
I think he meant using Blender with other game engines like Unreal or Unity.

Used these two tutorials when I made this character:

They're pretty decent resources I'd say, though I only really used them for topology references.

I'd love to hear some feedback on my character as well.

She looks good. Personally I'd put her in a pose, since you've already gone through the effort of giving her a facial expression. You can use something like Mixamo to very quickly do it, then just put her in a position the character would contextually be in.
