I mean fair enough, posting the results of your tutorial following isn't necessarily worthy of a lot of praise, but let's not tut shame, how else will people learn

>>
>>592918
It isn't that because he followed the tutorial, but because that is the thousandth time that doughnut tutorial has been posted here. It is literally the modern day cloth in glass bowl tutorial. And making yet another one of these threads is pointless. He could have posted it in the wip thread or that 3DCG general.

At least to me that's what it seems like.
>>
>>592675
thanks doc
>>
>>592959
There's lots of threads here that are utterly pointless, but there's no real rule against making them.

This board would literally be two threads if WIP actually had to be posted in the WIP thread (if you discount all the shill threads). Ironically, it would be a lot better that way, but either management or our janitor just doesn't give a crap and it's a free-for-all on this nearly-abandoned board.

Anyway, self-moderation on /3/ sucks and we should try to do a better job of shunning people into posting in the WIP thread to keep these useless one-offs to a minimum, instead of them being most of the board.

when learning blender, the first few donuts can be difficult, but then when you get the hang of the interface something will click and you'll be making better and better donuts in no time.
after about a year, you'll compare your current donut to this first donut and be blown away by the difference in quality.
then after a few more years of diligent practice, you'll be able to move on to coffee cups, and the world's your oyster.

Blender is getting a new real-time rendering engine called Eevee. It's already available in the non-mainstream release:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-mxJzQ9Jquk
>>
>>611046
I have a very shitty computer and I'm currently having trouble with Cycles being too slow on my machine.
Will this EEVEE engine make things render faster as if I was using Cycles on a faster computer?
>>
>>592862
Underrated post
>>
>>611281
Yes. It's different, with Cycles you have to wait for the image to slowly clean up, here you don't have to wait for anything. Also, why don't you try it out? Just download the latest build.
>>
>>611323
I'm tempted but my computer is already slow enough and I have an aversion to install programs I don't really need (just to delete them right after and leave a bunch of stuff scattered around the registry).
I'll just switch to it when it's released and stable.

yes, here are my suggestions.
i made pic related (its not the best i can make, i only invested an hour on it)

>turn off global illumination, use only point lights
>point lights are only effective starting from 1000 strength (in cycles)
>the camera is too close, try playing with the camera settings, mainly FOV
>use the principald shader for all of your materials, no exception
>if you you want to use global illumination only, download an hdri image and use that

cycles nodes:
>subsurface scattering is probably good for things like food, mainly the bread
>use color ramp and mixgrb nodes to add some color variation, add mapping and texture coordinates to control it (i can probably pull an example)
>displacement and a little bit of sculpting adds realism, but only use it if you actually learned it
>play around with the shapes, make the chocolate drip more, make the bun fatter, can use inflate/deflate in blender.
i have more examples of food i made using nodes, if you want post your discord

Are you using dyntopo? If so it's difficult to pinpoint the problem, it could be any number of things.

Generally if you are using a clean base mesh without any mistakes in it you should be able to keep your mesh under control by enabling a high enough sculpt detail level with one of the collapse edges modes toggled on.

If you continue to have problems you may want to consider switching to modelling a good base mesh and using the multi-res modifier instead. As long as the base mesh is good, you shouldn't be able to screw up the mesh while using multi-res.

But you're in an artificial environment where you can control what the camera's doing? Depth of field is a thing, yes, but it wasn't like he was being asked to turn it off. Just bring the radius down so the effect is less strong. That's all. And for the record, raytracing noise looks far different from luminescent noise or low-light noise.

Surface
Scattering

It's basically as if light was scattered through the volume of the object. Your skin, for example, will glow pink if you put a torch up to it because of the underlying blood vessels and fat. Coloured plastics will have the same SSS colour as the surface unless they're painted.
>>

It's the shit that half of all 3D artists get wrong, so their renders look like crap.

Consider how many layers with different refraction compose your material, and their differing indices of light absorption per wavelength, and also indices of refraction; then feed your shader with whatever approximates those values, as best as the shader is capable of (hint: no current shader does an exact job, or supports all relevant data), and you're 90% done.

>>630325
Are you rendering on a 486?
>>
>>630325
Protip: on your Render settings panel, go all the way down to Performance, tick Progressive Render to get a preview of how your render will look like. If it looks passable, cancel the render, untick Progressive Render, let it render out fully. (or you can just let the Progressive Render go until all noise is eliminated and cancel it to save. Progressive renders will save their final state if you cancel them midway.)
Alternatively, numpad-0 to switch to your camera view, shift-z to enter render preview, it'll preview your scene with your depth of field settings too.
If you're spending 12+ hours on a render, either you're running a shit tier computer or you don't have Blender optimised. If you have a GPU, go to User Preferences, System, Cycles Compute Device. Nvidia cards use CUDA, AMD cards use OpenCL. It's also strongly recommended you render with denoising enabled. Find a sweet spot between your number of samples and the denoising intensity.
>>
>>630327
No, i was on a pentium n3540 and still am. I may have exagerated on the 12+ hours because i let it render while i was alsleep but still a very long render, arround 7/8~ hours (i think it was the sprinkles that extended the render). Still proud of it.

They're both shit regardless. Yours is the only mug in the thread that can cut a person's lip if they try drinking from it. I wouldn't feed those donuts to my dog. They're fucking raw. By the time they've cooked your coffee will be cold.

>>630553
>And bevel the top edge loops on your cup!
The board is too sharp, too.

>>630325
The icing and sprinkles are fine, but the scene's a little bit dark, dough looks like a toy and the sprinkles on the dish are a presentation issue. You wouldn't use that green dish for icing and sprinkles and then also use it to serve. If it were a plate with a sandwich on it, it'd be fine to have crumbs or bits of cheese on the plate, because sandwiches do fall apart, and it's not uncommon for people to savagely use only one plate when making them.
