>Nvidia attributes the reason for retiring the seminal renderer as a change in focus. Under the question “Why is Mental Ray being discontinued” they will that “NVidia will focus on bringing GPU accelerated ray tracing technology to every rendering product out there”, listing OptiX, MDL, IndeX, and IRay for CAD as technologies that will benefit from further investment.

who actually used this anyway?

Will they open source it?

The place where I internee at. Needless to say, they suck.
>>

I used it back in the day when it was the default renderer for Max. It was always such a piece of shit, lots of confusing settings, no easy way to get a better image without racking up big render times, and so on.
I remember trying out various other render engines like Final Render, Brazil and VRay to see what worked, but it was a time when every one sucked at something different. Well, VRay survived, so I guess it had the most work put into it. Not sure how MR lasted this long.

I learned PBR under mental ray when I didn't (and still don't) know what I'm doing

Goodnight(or more like good riddance), sweet prince.

I used its earlier versions waaay back in the days of Softimage|3D...like 1997-98ish.

I got Softimage 3d 4.0 on my computer but I don't know if I should install it. I doubt it's going to work in compatibility mode and I'm too lazy to set up a VM.
>>
>>592745
VM might work. Last version I used was 3.9, back on Win2k. It won't work properly on modern versions of Windows, including XP...I think.
>>
>>592427
They killed it cause autodesk dropped them for Arnold as their main renderer a couple of versions ago.

...i actually started to use Quicksilver (viewport directx render) for my productions.
Not much of a difference if you use lights correctly, and WAY faster.

grandpa software.
>>

Looks like another retarded Blendlet can't comprehend, as usual. SI|3D was a godlike piece of software. First thing I learned, together with Alias. It's next incarnation -XSI- shat all over Autodicks puny efforts. Autodick knew that and killed it.

Ergo: fuck Autodick. wank software by wankers for wankers

Everything about this is extremely aesthetic.
