Is Maya really the best? I've been learning 3DS Max for like 2 months now after moving on from Blender because I had assumed it was the best at modeling but I hardly see max mentioned yet always see people talking about Maya. Am I learning the wrong software for modeling?
>>
I thought these days Maya and Max are functionally the same tool.
>>
>>589848
Nope, just research what industry you want to get into uses
>>
They all do the same basic shit. Switching so often does you more harm than good desu.
>>
Most game studios seem to prefer Maya from what I've heard. I only know Max but a few people I know use Maya and at least for Archviz stuff and hardsurface stuff Max seems better to me. Many useful tools such as autosmooth and it can handle shitload of geometry where Maya seems to crap out in comparison.

It's just my limited experience tho. Can't really go wrong with learning either, and once you know one, learning the other should not be that difficult.
>>

Basically this: >>589851 jumping around thinking one program is somehow magically better than another is just a waste of your time.
More often than not the best path is to try each program exclusively for one week and try to make something in each, maybe follow a tutorial of some sort, the one you felt best at using or had the most progress in is what you should stick with.

But to answer your question, Max is one of the top programs to beat for hard surface poly modeling, and two months in I doubt you're even close to pushing its full abilities. Maya is desirable in other areas like (from what I hear) better tools for character rigging and animation, but since I do mostly hard surface modeling, it doesn't really entice me all that much. The Max rigging and animation tools are serviceable enough as they are for me to use them, and not being a connoisseur of animation, I don't get my panties in a twist from some sort of vague (to me) deficiencies.

>>589849
Not at all, they share some similar features on account of both being owned by Autodesk, but the UI, hotkeys, and editing stack are completely different. If you're deep into one of them the other will seem all backwards to you.
>>
Of all 3d apps I used, I think Maya is the best. It's very reliable and can get any kind of jobs done. The only thing I hate about it is it's glitchy and slow UI.
>>
>>589885
upgrade your cpu to AMD
>>
>>589886
Your parents must have been involved in some heavy karmic shit when they gave birth to such retard.
>>
>>589886

Wow what a retard. Maya's UI is known for being laggy, it's not a hardware issue, it's a software issue.
>>
>>589902
its UI is pure Qt, made by a third party entirely.
>>
learned for 2 years maya, its too crashy, not have a real time renderer, its good, but i see alot more options on belnder, also maya is 3k dollars if im not mistaken, and its alot, unlike blender that is free and even has more options than a program i need to spend my life earnings on and get alot less.
>>
>>589848
Rigger/animator here. Maya is the best I've used. The plugin ecosystem is incredible. Other software does certain things better, but that doesn't affect me.
>>
>>589848
>Is Maya really the best?
no.
maya is lower than blender.

blender is middle of the road.

you should really think about this statement.
>>
use 3ds max for small stuff
>>
THREAD HIJACK

How is C4D compared to Maya? They boast on their website about the "legendary reliability" and "ease-of-use" of the program. They even offer student licenses a-la Autodesk.

I've used Maya for uni shit for four years now and I don't necessarily want to switch, I'm just curious.
>>
If you're cool with 3DS and can get away with using 3DS, hold onto 3DS.
I've learned poly modeling for 3DS, Blender and Maya and, even though I'm stuck using Maya since I'm mostly just doing Animation now, 3DS was always the nicest to use for modeling. It's had a lot of rough patches with stability and I'm not sure where it's at now, but the tools have always been consistently pretty decent.
>>
>>589972
>blender is middle of the road.
Blender is a burning landfill.
>>
>>589981
I main C4D, but I've used all other major applications.
Hands down, best UI I've ever used. I've crashed maybe two or three times over something like 10 years/9 versions.
I'd say those boasts are well earned. It's not the most powerful application, but it's more than enough for my needs.

YMMV
>>
>>590002
Maya is a burning landfill, Anon.
Least stable and clunkiest UI. Slow at everything.
>>
>>590143
again, the UI is pure, stock Qt, not written by Autodesk.
>>
>>589848
Max is really great for modeling!
Maya would just be better for animation
>>
>>589972
>maya is lower than blender
do NOT take any advice from this fucking guy
>>
>>589983
this
I totally agree
Max's stability was at its worst in 2011, but its top notch now (2014+ versions)
>>
>>590149
Not that guy, but it really is.
Why anyone would still use Maya in 2017 is beyond me.
>>
>>590153
even WETA uses it
>>
>>590154
Yes, but why
>>
>>590155
Because its simply the best at creating the worlds best CGI. You on the other hand are basically a blind man trying to create images with broken, shit tools.
>>
>>590156
>CGI
Well, that's thanks to Arnold, not Maya.

>You on the other hand are basically a blind man trying to create images with broken, shit tools.
You've never used Blender, have you? Unlike Maya it's not broken, and doesn't crash every half hour.
Also, see
>>590151
>>
>>590156
that settles it

>>589972
>>590153
If the best/biggest studios like Pixar, ILM, WETA, MPC, etc all use Maya, why wouldnt it be good enough for you, รด special anons?
>>
>>590158
Because there are better alternatives?
>>
>>590159
>implying your opinion is better than countless professionals who disagree
>>
>>590160
Seems you don't have a single argument of your own.
>>
>>590159
is this satire?
>>
>>590161
are you also a member of the flat-earth society?
>>
>>590162
>>590163
Nice arguments, samefag.
I'm going to bed.
>>
>>590164
fuck off troll
>>
>>590164
how can you think for a second that anyone will start a debate with you after claiming blender is superior to Maya? you're already too far in your world of delusions, anon
>>
>>590165
>>590166
Good morning. I see that you still haven't been able to find a single argument, and I'm not surprised.
Mayafags are the Apple retards of 3D software.
>>
>>589852
The reason is that you can customized the hell out of maya easily. This is essential for game pipelines.

Have you tried create and maintain a large maxscript?
>>
I believe 3DS Max is great for modelling. I am in no way a professional 3D modeler, but for the past couple of years I've been using it, and it's a breeze to use.

I've tried Blender, Maya, C4D and Modo in the past. While interesting on their own, they don't do it for me.

I think the best response you'll get is >>589983
>>
>>590145

That is not true, Autodesk maintains a large custom patchset and uses a heavily modified Qt.

https://github.com/autodesk-forks/qtbase/tree/adsk-contrib/vfx/5.6.1

Not criticizing Qt or Maya, just the facts.
