Blender is like the VIM of modeling. Slow to get into, but once you know all the hotkeys and workflow, it's crazy fast. I've used C4D extensively and 3DS, and Blender's core modeling workflow exceeds it handily.

What's with FBX's popularity anyway?

Only thing I can think of is that it has a text-based format like OBJ, but with rigging support.

Would have thought DAE would be better than that though simply due to it having better support with more modelling programs while also supporting rigging and being uncompressed and text-based which I presume is easier for some exporters and importers to handle, like OBJ.

When I say exporters and importers I don't really have professional big-budget programs in mind, like Maya, I'm thinking of funny little tools people post on Github like model rippers for Unity or the Doom 4 model ripper which used the latest FBX SDK which I had to hunt down an updated compile of an off-brand Blender FBX importer add-on for, which I found on DeviantArt of all places.
