Yeeeahh... no........ I'm not gonna make it.4 years out of university and I haven't got a single piece of paid work.My 3d journey is officially over, no point coming here and making myself depressed. I've reached acceptance that i'll be nothing more than a wageslave in an overly warm office hating my life.I wish you all the best of luck. Don't become like me. Goodbye.
welcome to the industry
This industry you have to be talented to even get an internship. Being mediocre isn't enough. It's like having to come out the womb as an adult and ready for the world. No room to grow. Nonetheless don't give up OP, you could get a lucky break if you persevere.
>>566205uh make ur own game ang get $$$$
>>566211this is a really naive mindset
>>566205>4 years out of universityThere's your problem
>>566216Wait I read that as 4 years of University, never mind.
>>566205How many hours are you spending weekly for improving your skills? I personally went for 40h a week for a whole year (I imagined myself being into a 9-5 job) after that I found an internship pretty easily that landed me a job. Basically dont limit yourself to be average, work your ass off and eventually you will make it.
>>566218Did you work while learning 40 hours a week? If so how many hours?
>>566218there are other factors other than your work. i know this sound crazy to some people but bear with me.some industries are very cliquish. i know someone that doesn't even have a portfolio and he got a job by just going to 3D events and networking, he just added everyone he could on social media and become active. none the less.it might seem crazy to someone who is just out of college but some fields of work are like large circle of friends and everyone are just eating off eachother connections. this is how games like Andromeda and so many others came to be
maybe make porn on patreonor freelanceor sell asset packs for gamesmaybe if you're really specialized you can sell tutorials
>>566205Hi OP,Read some books.1. Eat that frog.2. Deep Work3. Mastery both books at that name.4. Stephen King on writing. If your 4 years out of uni and not industry worthy you must be doing something really badly with your time.
Imo kill yourself, theres no point living if you failed at your dreamWhy live a pointless life as a cog in the corporate machine, wageslaving for next weks rent. Just end it.
>>566205Holy shit are you me? If I give lend you my gun to shoot yourself will you kill me too? I just want this to be over.
>>566205Hey op could you post the most recent thing you've made. I'm not going to critique you i just want to know where you are in terms to skill.
>>566237like watching anime
>>566242>>566245>I'm not going to critiquehonestly just rek my shit, im done anyway, rest of my life is destined to work in a cubicle
>>566245that's not a bad blockout.i would critique it if you had a texture
>>566249i cant or my folio will get backtraced and some asshole reports me to the suicide hotline
>>566245/d/ here. I don't know much about 3d/cg aside from some Inventor in high school, but I do know that I've seen money paid for less quality ass on Patreon. Hope I helped.
>>566245Here is my take on this. The sculpt is ok but is very basic and it's not properly refined. It lacks detail. You also need to finish the model, in the sense that it has to be production ready. Clean topology, Unwrapped and textured preferably. If you also know rigging it's even better. Nobody is gonna hire you if you have a portfolio full of only zbrush sculpts, even worst if those sculpts are things you can do in 30 in of work, like this here rabbit model. There are probably millions of people who can do zbrush sculpts.(if you want to be just digital sculptor than you have to be a lot better - look up Caleb Nefzen to get an idea the direction you need to take if that is what you want)Also set yourself a goal: Pick an artist whose skill you want to reach and don't stop until you get there. And another very important advice: make yourself a fan base, make yourself known. Spam all those cg facebook groups with your work. Advertisement is very important in this field.
>>566250both of these models aren't bad but they won't get you a job.you need firm grasp in texturing
>>566245show us something more complex. DESU this bunny has good look to it, it's simple but, it's too basic. if you have not done anything more complex, then these, then you are not trying, or you just dicking around and is lazy ass..
>>566251>>566252>>566253>>566254thanks ive acknowledged your commentsi do have completed pieces but i don't want them leading to folio, wips will have to doits true my work ethic isnt 100 but year after year my motivation decreased and now im at an all time low and thought fuck it, time to move on
>>566258your work is mediocre at best. Your only future in the industry would be as a wageslave without the ability to move up unless you were a female with a real vagina and huge breasts
>>566259yep. maybe i can identify as a grill or get implants?
>>566260>with a real vaginaCheckmate.
>>566261fuck , and here i thought i could get into bioware with XL implantspic related is a gay speed scultp
Stop doing character modelling. The competition is to damn high for that and you'd need to be extremely good.
>>566263That's retarded. We excel by pushing ourselves to the limit through competition with others. The fact that there are a lot o character artists out there means you have a lot of tutorials and material to help you improve and the fact that you have a lot of competition means you have a lot of people from whom to learn and that will motivate you and push you forward.Stop trying to cheat your way out of working hard by choosing a field that you think "has less competition" and that you think it's easier to succeed in. It's more than likely not as you think it is. That's just a way of you to make excuses for yourself. Find what you like and work to improve it until you are on the top. Search for your weakens point and improve them. Study rather than mindlessly practice (despite what people will tell you here, to improve your skill you need to study, practice will more than likely only improve your speed, not your skill - as in you will do you usual crappy models, but faster. Or it will make you better, just at a super slow rate when compared to studying).
>>566205How long have you been sculpting?
>>566255you dipshit. 4 chan autocorrects to that shit your mother is discarded >>566262yeah. you cold get in anywhere in industry using gay as insult (at least with that mindset people will hate you)and stop whining like a bitch. >>566258this is not bad if you ask meface is correctly done. + interest yourself with other things in art than 3d/game/character sphere. I mean for inspiration
Wait, please let me hire you! Email me: firstname.lastname@example.orgI need 3d models for this drone company: http://adia.tech
>>566263Worst advice in the thread yet. Sucking at something is the first step to being kinda good at something.
>>566205>>566274Do it op, I believe in you!
>>566212did exactly thatImplies you need time or a team
>>566205Yup I'm the same. My own fault really as I was never willing to shill on social media or accept criticism. I also got in a pattern of doing anime shit and never pushing myself. I still do it as a hobby to show off to friends though.
>>566274You need a better web designer than a 3D artist
>>566302>shill on social media...what do you mean by that? I post what i do on facabook where I have only people I know. and on instagram where some people are following me. is that shilling? if not, tell me, I'm willing to do ))
>>566318PS: I'm not op but i think he should not give up ...
>>566315This. Not even responsive, but there's more problems here (hint: colors, layout and dimensions). I cant' read anything and even textareas don't work.
>>566318Post your progress on Polycount
>>566262>>566260You really need to focus on fundamental skills.1. Learn substance painter2. Learn anatomy- Go to /ic/ look at the book section and get Anatomy for sculptors. The problem with character sculpting is that since your focus mainly on sculpting, then stuff like HP to LP, texturing and hard surface stuff is not being practice that much.
>>566258>my motivation decreased and now im at an all time low and thought fuck it, time to move onwell i can understand that. but don't ditch 3D altogether. keep at it if you enjoy it
>>566220maybe thats why Andromeda's animation were badly made instead of choosing the best candidates they choose their lame ass friends
>>566327Andromeda animation are probably coding problems. You should really blame the programmers, who are probably men.
>>566205Shit man you got an office job? I'm doing manual warehouse labor because I can't even get a job like that.
>>566325>muh F U N D A M E N T A L S
>>566339But, its true.OP had 4 years to drill in fundamentals, but instead he just messing around doing crappy sculpts. You can see the beginner look at his sculpts.FZD students spend a year doing fundamentals 16 hours a day. OP could have done the same thing but over two years 8 hours a day.Someone even dumped all their homework from the school on /ic/.If OP wanted to be an environment artist, then having weak fundamentals can be hidden with technical skills and stuff like quixel suite, scan data and good orthographic references with sheets of topology.>>566205How much time do you actually put in outside of work. I mean actual work. You have a cushy office job you should be employable now.
>>566342why you beat down on op? you know damn well that being good doesn't guarantee a jobnow obviously op could make efforts and get a job but this industry in particular your skills have to be above and beyond of what you consider "good"
>>566205i started learning early this year and im 100% living off freelance work. you can do it op
>>566346Already? What type of work do you do and where did you learn from?
>>566346How do you get gigs? Through specialized sites or do you email studios directly?
>>566349>>566353it's not very glamorous. i don't work with companies, i work for pervs. i make them lewd models and they give me money. I usually do private commissions but also get a bit on the side from patreon. not the way to go if you're serious about making a name in the industry, but suits me fine, pays for rent, food and internet, and is honestly fairly sarisfying work.
>>566356You think you can ever make it big like Monstergirl island or the people who make 3-10k on patreon a month?
>>566358I dunno. I'd have to get a lot more efficient with my time and market better, at the moment im not putting that much effort into patreon. Maybe once I start animating more, since animations are popular. But I'm not counting on it.
>>566342>Someone even dumped all their homework from the school on /ic/.Please link it if you know where it is.
>>566363feng is shit and doesnt know anything about design. Its apparent in his latest youtube videos that he's fallen way way waaayyyy off. His FZD school is just another moneygrab
>>566205Make 3D porn and set up a patreon
>>566356Shit man, I always wanted to do that. Can i ask you how you started and where do you find your perverts that are willing to pay for that? How do you even advertise something like that?
>>566205> 4 years of universitywhy the fuck would you pay 250k+ and spend 4 years at a university to learn CGI, i bet the 2 and a half years of that education was bullshit liberal arts classes too. if you're gonna go to school for CGI, at least go somewhere known and credible like Gnomon, where they have 95-100% placement rating.
>>566372Yes thats all well and good in hindsight, but at the time I was really naive., i really thought it was the only way forward to get into the field, in fact it was a colossal waste of time and money.i can barely remember a single lesson
>>566373its alright, you wouldnt of made it anyways. you could barely put the effort into working on what you thought was the only way forward, doing it on your own would of been suicide. you ARE destined for a office job because going above and beyond what was asked of you isnt something that naturally comes easily to you, so youll never make it out of that office either
>>566374office jobs are better than slave labor
>>566377its a lesser form, yes
>>566374i wouldn't be too quick on dismissing shitty draining jobs.yeah you get treated like shit and work alot. but at least you have certain job security and steady income which i would take over doing 3d for "living"
Not OP here, but i think this is a really interesting thread. So anyway, im a kinda insecure guy, at least for now since i only have 2 years of 3D. I just want to know from you guys how long did it take to get the first job? Or the first freelancer job? How much knowledge you guys had when faced a job for the first time?Showing a portfolio, is it with artstation? Linkedin? Your own site? Is there a preference or whatever?
>>566328>>>566327>who are probably men.Not like this...
Talent helps you an industry topper but its not needed to be IN the industry. I just got my degree 4 months ago and ive been working for 2 month now. Its doesn't pay much but i get to work on really high end machines (dual gtx 1080ti 11gb in sli, i7 7700 )and render farms( 20 machines with gtx 1060/1070, using redshift renderer) which is a reward on its own as far as am concerned and in a year I'll have enough experience to jump to a better company. I am charecter animator and rigger mainy but i also do some basic dynamics and simulation coz the company asked me to.
>>566404i got my first freelance gig after modeling for a year.at the time i had a lucky streak of freelance gigs and it dried out after those few months, completely. im the type of guy that won't shill his shit everywhere, but that's probably costing me in work. but i already chose to do something else for work and have 3D as a hobby anyways
>>566327I think the idea was that the anims were mostly motion cap that nobody bothered to go through and touch up, because of incompetence, lazyness, lack of time, etc
>>566468i don't believe it. a company like bioware should have a really rough QC for its artists.i think someone just let it slide
>>566469I think it has to do with time/money. EA saw what a clusterfuck the game was (and how long it took), and they simply stopped sinking money into it. They made a rough calculation on how much money they could made with the fanboys and how much it will cost them (good will and reputation) and decided to push it out with all the bugs.
>>566469Bioware is a brand not a studio. Bioware Montreal (which made Andromeda) was formed in 2009 to pump out ME DLC while Bioware Edmonton (the original) worked on new games. It's like getting the caddie to play in the pro leagues. Even worse they changed engines from Unreal Engine 3 to Frostbite, Frostbite being DICE's inhouse engine until EA decided to make the other studios use it. For reference, DICE's technical director is the guy who literally created Frostbite's prototype in his room or basement or whatever and then brought it into DICE when they hired him and back when BF3 was coming out DICE said Frostbite and BF3 maps are so complex that they won't be releasing mod tools even though modders in the past routinely put out better stuff than actual developers. I don't doubt that the developers at Montreal are incompetent, just look at the grade of assets, but Andromeda is basically the perfect storm of garbage from executive decisions, to management, to tools, to just skill and experience of the grunts.
>>566262>>566258>>566245This an okay level for someone who isn't a character artist. If you have something else you're good at, this is fine. If you're trying to be a character artist, this isn't good enough, that field is very competitive. Don't aim for that right away, start with hard surface modelling (more complicated than this >>566250 though, you need to show you know the technical side and can follow instructions), texturing in Substance or hand painting textures. Those skills can get you a job, character art probably won't. How many characters does an average game needs sculpted? It's a high end job for experienced people.
>>566205what university?>doesnt post work>uni's basically shoe you into your first low end gig somewhere reputable >op is just a failure crying on /3/whats new?
>>566632pretty much this desu, stuff like this only happens to LOSERS
>>566632>doesn't post workDid you even bother reading the thread?
>>566368Not him but try making a tumblr and posting your lewd stuff, eventually as your page grows you can say you're taking commissions
>mfw I first started dicking around with 3D when I was 16>mfw I still have one out of three years left of uni>mfw already got more job offers than I can handle at the moment
>>567916how do you get your job offers?
>>567955escorting agency, backpage
>>566481 Did he lose the rights to his engine to the company?Frostbite looks like it handle things neatly, especially the particles.
>>567916I dont think people realize what a uni is and what is it for (what a student needs it for), and why not being in uni can still get you on the professional level.
>>566205My friend is 17 he got a job My other friend is 16 she got a jobBoth started with sketch upMy first friend uses Maya nowAnd my second is still using sketchupTrust me // ur not trying hard enough

where do you live opi moved to toronto and despite some studios closing the demand seems to be getting higher, same for vancouver (they look more for seniors tho), i wouldn't know about US, I've heard LA is scarce right nowalso it's important to be humble when you're networking, ive been told so many times people don't want you in your studio if you're an unbearable, yet talented dick
>>566205I make very good bank doing 3d and animation for games and porn. All you have to do is better than bad.

>>566205Going to university to study 3d is like going to university to study how to become a rock star.
>>570747It makes me wonder now... How many people from Disney and Pixar have degrees in some 3D field?
>>570889Nepotism.A degree isn't important when your mom/dad or some other relation is mentoring you to join Disney. And if you show signs of talent and know somebody in Disney, well you're fast-tracked and trained.Thing is, even if you're an average artist - when you immerse yourself in an environment of world-leading animators and artists...... you will learn fast and be Disney-tier in no time.In the meantime us faggots immerse ourself in /3/ and get worse.
>>570931nobody whos serious about 3d wants anything to do with Disney. All Disney wants is to make franchises that are suitable for amusement park rides.Real 3d folk work at Weta Digital.
>>566258Okay, so I'm not /3/ at all, just some anon exploring 4chan. That said, I'm a self taught web dev and maybe I could say something useful.I would never hire a web dev that's never made a website. No one will hire you if you've never finished anything. You need to have something complete, finished, polished, that you're proud of. You'll never get hired with anything less.I think, I'm not a /3/, either way good luck!
>>570935>ugly mocap monkies or bland family filmsWow really makes me want to kill myself knowing these are pretty much my two career options.
>>570931You know I wouldn't even mind being a janitor at the Pixar campus. That place just looks pretty cool to work in overall.
Why don't you try selling stuff on the Unity Asset Store or Unreal Market Place or any other website that you can sell models on. You probably can't make a career off of it, but at least you'll be getting something out of it. You've stuck to it for 4 years, so clearly your passionate about it. Now isn't the time to back out.
I feel the same way as OP, except I've only been out of school for 2 months.I'm running out of money as my current job is going to end soon. (temp) basically i need a fulltime gig to survive.
>>571143survival is overrated. Shoot yourself in the head and ascend
>>566258You'd still be a cog in the machine even if you got on a team which is fine. You might not be making hero assets from the get go but you will be learning either way. Send the fucking resume in and take the chance. Put some finished work in you portfolio ASAP and get ready to compete. Jacking off to replys on this website isn't going to get you to where you need to be.
>>571143Look for job postings in your local area (linkedin, artstation, wherever). Apply to all of them. Join a 3d group or start a polycount thread and ask for portfolio reviews.I work in the industry (although as a junior), if you post your folio here I might be able to tell you what works or doesn't.
>>566327Andromeda had no real animation, I mean the lipsync stuff. They used an algorythm to substitute animation that would have to be done by hand otherwiseIt was mostly a collection of awful choices and not approving decent work
>>570931kek it's called networking you dum dum>In the meantime us faggots immerse ourself in /3/ and get worse.that's about right, honestly just take everything from here with a grain of salt, if you want to throw your stuff out there post your work at artstation, ask for critiques somewhere else, /3/ is only good for shitposting and venting
>>572240>kek it's called networking you dum dumif your work isnt absolute shit just post in the Looking for Work sections on polycount. Dont waste thousands of dollars and hour going to school like a retard.

>>572253Hows that working out for you?`Making AAA games and hollywood movies yet?
I've been out of school 12 years OP and haven't done shit.Is it too late for me at this point? I have no idea how to explain why it took me so long.I guess because I learned in school I actually fucking hate animating and 3d in general but feel like a total failure. 12 years ago and I think about animation every single fucking day of my life. It makes me massively depressed.
>>574094you have to learn Blender to even get an interview now
>>574095I originally wanted to be a programmer but I was literally told I'm not smart enough (130 IQ). Maybe I will learn that.
>>574096If you hate 3d and animating don't do it for a job. It will become worse and more tedious. As for being a programmer, there is no fucking IQ prerequisite. Just go learn a language and the problem solving associated with programming. You've had 12 years to figure this out, start now before it's 25 years.

lets fresh upoo thiw thread again bois
>>579718Not that guy but I'm assuming you're talking about personality/teamfit/taking criticism/not being an autist? Care to elaborate more on your experiences?
>>566260Holy shit. I haven't been on here in over a year and this is one of the last pictures I remember being posted in a WIP thread
>>568037You are right. You can't wait that long.No one is going to have a scanner that can do external, internal geometry and align all parts for a very long time, let alone one that can model within fractions of a mm for engineering purposes. Hell a $5,000 scanner can only do half a car (realistically one plane of panels at a time over about the distance of half a car at a time) and the geometry still needs to be rebuilt. If you tried to scan something like that motorcycle you'd just laugh at the detail of anything under 1/8th of an inch. It's all good tho. I remember doing labor in the mountains for shit pay and not liking people bitching about not being able to find a job.
>>566252not op, but if my scuplt is as detailed as that Caleb Nefzen guy, can I land a job as character artist?
>>566327This is the case for Bethesda, their lead animator was hired because he's a childhood friend of Todd Howard
