Clean topology, Unwrapped and textured preferably. If you also know rigging it's even better. Nobody is gonna hire you if you have a portfolio full of only zbrush sculpts, even worst if those sculpts are things you can do in 30 in of work, like this here rabbit model. There are probably millions of people who can do zbrush sculpts.(if you want to be just digital sculptor than you have to be a lot better - look up Caleb Nefzen to get an idea the direction you need to take if that is what you want)Also set yourself a goal: Pick an artist whose skill you want to reach and don't stop until you get there.And another very important advice: make yourself a fan base, make yourself known. Spam all those cg facebook groups with your work. Advertisement is very important in this field.

Talent helps you an industry topper but its not needed to be IN the industry. I just got my degree 4 months ago and ive been working for 2 month now. Its doesn't pay much but i get to work on really high end machines (dual gtx 1080ti 11gb in sli, i7 7700 )and render farms( 20 machines with gtx 1060/1070, using redshift renderer) which is a reward on its own as far as am concerned and in a year I'll have enough experience to jump to a better company. I am charecter animator and rigger mainy but i also do some basic dynamics and simulation coz the company asked me to.

Even worse they changed engines from Unreal Engine 3 to Frostbite, Frostbite being DICE's inhouse engine until EA decided to make the other studios use it. For reference, DICE's technical director is the guy who literally created Frostbite's prototype in his room or basement or whatever and then brought it into DICE when they hired him and back when BF3 was coming out DICE said Frostbite and BF3 maps are so complex that they won't be releasing mod tools even though modders in the past routinely put out better stuff than actual developers. I don't doubt that the developers at Montreal are incompetent, just look at the grade of assets, but Andromeda is basically the perfect storm of garbage from executive decisions, to management, to tools, to just skill and experience of the grunts.

If you're trying to be a character artist, this isn't good enough, that field is very competitive. Don't aim for that right away, start with hard surface modelling (more complicated than this >>566250 though, you need to show you know the technical side and can follow instructions), texturing in Substance or hand painting textures. Those skills can get you a job, character art probably won't. How many characters does an average game needs sculpted? It's a high end job for experienced people.
