Whats the secret to making cute Disney characters ?
solid 2d drawings from drawfags
>>552605I think the secret ingredient is paprika.
Vigorous animal testing ?
>>552605a fake thumb and deck of cards
>>552605It's all in the nose.
>>552605There is no secret. Just do it.
>>552606This. You have to design your 3d model backwards with the animation in mind first. Think of what the character will be doing, what sort of poses and actions, and what impression you want someone to take away when they look at the character. Then you build it in 3d.
>>552605smooth the fuck out of everything
>>552627OP gif looks cute without seeing the nose
>>552627Almond shaped eyes, eyelashes, unique colour of eyes, then nose, lips, ears, waist size, and butt.
>>552627Of those 9; Rapunzel, Lucille, Mavis, and the woman from Paperman short are cute in my eyes... if not out-right attractive.2 of the other 5 I have no idea who they are; Violet (ugly nose, body proportions) & Vanellopie & Astrid never triggered any interest for me.
>>552605How the fuck would we know?We can´t even nail the damn skin right.
>>552702>Vanellope never triggered any interest for me.Pedo here, she's hot
>>552723shes got a nose like an infected cyst
>>552627>disneyi count 5 disney characters
>>552605practicing cute Disney characters
>>552721Grotesque michael jackson nose. I swear you do it deliberately duck-sama.
big eyesbig tits
good rendering and materials
>>552767>duck-samaaparently, i have fans.>>552783No, medium tits.
>>552787wat happen to her horns?and ur trollchan not duk-sama
>>552724heheh! ok, I like Sticky Wipplesnit.
>>552605Renderman and pedophilia.
>>552605Well their secrets for their 2D work are literally in a book (pic). I assume many of these brilliant ideas were modified into new 3D animation methods. Haven't seen a 3D book, but if you stop and think about it enough the screen is still 2D.
>>552605Make sure to tell Disney if you find out, because they sure as hell don't know.
Put less effort into it. Look at movies like the minons. They look cute because they dont have that many details. Try drawing a simple picture with not too many details. Looks pretty cute right? Start adding more and more details and starts looking pretty fucking ugly
>>552721>>552787That's some quality nightmare fuel, anon
Guys, guys, is this cute? Fresh off of speed sculpt, a long way to go.
>>555751What the fuckIs this a serious question? You can see for yourself that it's not.
>>555751potential , you can make her very freidnly looking ,then it wiol be good. Maybe a little biger mouth and nose
>>555751Looks like a cute character's mother more than anything, keep at it
>>555751she reminds me of a mean-spirited small dog. it's all in the mouth area
>>555751Change of pace, Alioto?
>>555751Her nose and brow lines are too sharp. She has no eyebrows. Button noses can be cute and sometimes they can be hideous, it's pretty bad here. The nasolabial folds are too obvious even though her face is almost neutral, they should crease with a big smile but when they crease idly it makes her look like an old hag. Philtrum is also too wide and well defined imo, make it narrower and/or less defined. Upper lips are too big. Having her mouth hang slightly open makes her look like a downy. Jawline is obviously wide and straight, a little bit of curvature might help. Also, based on the shading it looks like she has no nasion, here the top of the nose and the brows meet. Generally people have a small dip there and then the nose protrudes out from there.
>>555765Your input is greatly appreciated, thanks a lot. I'll work on everything you've mentioned.
>>555766>dat boob jiggleHoly shit, no wonder frozen got so many rule34 porn.
>>555780are you le serious?
>>552627As someone with a smallish nose I can tell you that all of them would have serious respiratory problems and would probably need surgery at least a few times in their lives.
>>555751N E C K
>>555791Never seen the movie, but seeing some frozen rule34 pornThat was in the movie right ?
>>555780>sexualising physicsYou're as bad as the Japanese
>>555891I mean, Disney's the one that included that pretty exaggerated jiggle so I guess they're just as bad as the Japanese too?
>>555862it was but it was not that exaggerated
>>555751I think anatomy study did you a harm, that mouth looks hideous... + Wtf is with that hat?? cnfess anon, you see yourself in her doncha?
>>555751Tried to fix for you. Yea, the nasolabial folds are only on older people or crackheads.
>>556132everyone has nasolabial, it's less prominent on young people, but it is still there and visible. Pic related, you can still see it by her nostril
>>556137That's true, but the character hes making isn't realistic. And on that pic of Emma you can just barely see it and the light source to the left makes it more apparent.
>>556139stylization is based on reality, and in reality the nasolabial fold contributes to the major shapes of the face. I know that you can barely see it, thats the point. Light works to show forms, and since the light shows the form of the nasolabial at all in that image, that means that it still is noticeable. In 3d you model for multiple lighting setups, so in certain lightings -- without the nasolabial fold the face will look weird. You can see it in pic related on stylized characters, which makes those lighting setups not look weird.Your version with no indication of it makes the cheeks disappear and it looks weird.
>>552724It's a gumdrop
>>555792>>>552627>As someone with a smallish nose I can tell you that all of them would have serious respiratory problems and would probably need surgery at least a few times in their lives. Not a problem since cartoon characters don't need to breathe. :)
>>556166I swear you people will argue about anything. The reference you provided was straight on front lighting. You generally wont see the nasolabial protrusion with that kind of light. The original pic it's TOO MUCH...looks like a monkeys muzzle. Do you see nasolabial creases in those pics of Rapunzel and Anna? No you don't because it would look like SHIT and it would make them look OLD. It's a subtle shape...you don't need to exaggerate it to get the effect. I took an overlay to this to change the light direction and you can STILL see the nasolabial fold without the goddamn crease.
>>556757>you people with argue about anything>proceeds to ignore that that guy was talking about a fold not a crease so that you can argue with him> I know that you can barely see it, thats the point> It's a subtle shape...you don't need to exaggerate it to get the effect
>>556757your character looks like a fuckin devil, and you talk about raounzel "n shit?dude delete that hair and hat... and change fucking skin color to less red... and teeth are pointing forward.. I'd make your fucking model 1000 % better with move brush in 25 seconds
>>556757Im no /3/ expert but your model does look better now than it did at the start
>>556779>>556786I'm not the modeler. I just fucked with the original pic of the model in a paint program. Someone was arguing that the fold/crease whatever the fuck you want to call it was a good thing, and in my 2 previous alterations...>>556757>>556132I attempted to explain that the "fold" doesn't have to be THAT obvious. Even in the first alteration where i left the light exactly the same you can still see the nasolabial "fold" but it's not so grotesque.
>>556813Modeller here. Had a few fours free from school and work, was able to put some work into the model. Again, thanks for all the effort all you amazing people have put into helping, I can't believe someone would do that. It's tremendous help and is greatly appreciated. Hair and a hat were placeholders, I've stumbled onto a great preset for an afro, so that's what I'll be using.I'll work on the retopology next and then it's off to texturing.
>>556937It´s good. Ugly, but good.
>>556937yeah it's not bad after all,you just have strange taste...If I were you' I'd make 2-3 models before I'd start retopoing, it'll go much faster and they'll all be better and better, then retopo them actually I'm retopoing my first model right now )
>>556937u done with that?
>>552605No one does cute eyes anymore, they just do ugly giant baseball eyes. The eyelids have to be downplayed so the characters don't look like they have a crack addiction. To do actual cute eyes you need lattices to shape the eyes.
>>559109agreed. I feel like the cat eye like curvature of the eyelids, the pretty eyelashes and the big pupils are what makes them cute. just making big round eyeballs is a mistake
>>559112This is exactly what I am against, it's just the standard sphere design, it's just been dressed up to hide how boring it is. The eyeball itself is not an original unique shape used to express emotions as was the standard in traditional 2D animation. It is the same boring thing every animation studio does, you can switch Dory and Elsa's eyeballs and there'd be no real difference besides eye color as to how their eyes look. You need to shape the eyes into impossible shapes for true variety and appeal.
>>559113But thats not how people are used to concieving "pretty". We make that distinction by those very curves that mask the edges of the eyes. shaping the eyes into impossible shapes would be just uncanny and disturbing, every eye we see in real life is spherical and pretty much the same.
>>559114Not uncanny in the slightest, it used to be the standard to exaggerate the shape of the eyeballs up until Pixar became popular. Hey here's even a picture of Pixar's first short film showing even they experimented with eye shapes at one time.Playing with the eye shape gets rid of the deadness of the eyes. Spherical eyes really reduce a character to cheap animatronics. That's where the real uncannyness comes from, that and the obsession with realism (gross detailed irises for example). Real eyes aren't even spheres, the cornea bulges out which adds lots of subtly to eyelids when the eye moves and they are squishy, at least get that right if you want realism.
>>552605Gigantic eyesHugh mungus headTinny little lipsAnd soft tittiesDon't forget the thicc ass
>>552701>assGo away pedo
>>556937The nose and wide mouth are still kinda off putting. I mean you can stick lips on her but a wide mouth is a very masculine feature. It works when a character is expressing a very extreme emotion but a flat expression like that doesn't work in its favor. And her nose is borderline hard surface modeling from the looks of it, especially the bridge. Anyone, it's a definite improvement over the one you originally posted. Still not Disney cute though.
>>552721>>552787dude just paste the right reflective values lmao
>>556937Your model looks like Janet Jackson but uglier. If you're trying to do a black chick at least pick a good looking one like pic related
>>556937Forms around nose bridge too hard.Crease on bottom lip is non anatomical.forms around nasolabial fold too exaggerated for expression/age.Pic related, tried fixing but shit at image editing.
All the clichéd cute features a cute face can have (big eyes, small pebble nose, thin lips, narrow chin, chubby cheeks, small ears) and a complete lack of visual personality. If i had all the disney girl head models and i hid the hair. They'll pretty much look like they were slightly modifies duplicates.
>>552721Jeez that can take an eye out
>>552721I want Alioto to come back to show us his mouse girls again
>>555862This is an edited version you dense unicorn
>>556731if you think that a problem for the then you haven't seen the east my friend
>>552721try to combine anime with semi realistic/disney BAD IDEA MY FRIEND
>>552605>Whats the secret to making cute Disney characters ?Just sameface all your characters.
>>563365Even if it is just one face, you still didn't explain why they look cute so...
>>563370Because that particular face has toddler-like features that appears cute to everyone. Such as smooth geometry, no facial lines like grown up people, no or very smooth nose bridge, a tiny lift up nose, enlarged cat-like eyes, colorful eyes and hair, thin lips, round cheeks, etc...
>>552605Does this answer your question, OP?
>>552605While it's not an exact replication, the same methods apply. To be honest if you put Disney/Pixars shaders on these models they'd look relatively similar. https://www.artstation.com/artist/mccabe86/albums/all
>>552627top rightyoooooooI just watched that sonic werehog short
>>563373Don't forget the pouty eyebrows.
shane olson just came out with a workshop that focuses on just this, so if this is what you want to do it's probably the best resource right now. it's a bit out of my price range at the moment but you'd likely get more out of it than any college course or whateverhttps://www.3dcharacterworkshop.com/p/3DCWEnroll#video1
Big eyes and neoteny
>>559455hair = pubes
>>565602So you just essentially use the same construction methods as in drawing 2d but in 3d to design characters. That's all he seems to be doing don't know why you need to spend $600 to find that out. Just draw and remember that simple bold form and good silhouette is key, people.
>>556937it somehow makes me think of the singer at the rocky horror picture show movie
>>552605 Hundreds of highly trained artists pouring over every frame for years.
>>563365The sculpts are quite different. It's the animators that keep the same astetics for facial posing.
If you want to make anything appear appealing, use fibonacci's golden spiral. It's the same proportion test modeling agencies use on their applicants. I moved the spiral to each eye, nose and mouth and Rapunzel's features all hit points on this spiral. Best to run this test on orthographic renders.
>>565721Try it yourself
>>565721>>565722That's not how you use the golden spiral. There needs to be a hierarchy where every instance of the ratio lines up with something when using the spiral. So Every character would have golden ratio width and height proportions if you used the spiral in character design. People just stick to the golden ratio as it relates to arbitrary heights and not the spiral when they design characters to it.Even though I'm not a fan of this guy he explains it nicely here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PEiaGGp5ddYIt's still sort of silly as characters will never be in straight poses like that.
>>555751fuck no dude
>>555751The very opposite of cute. Fucking disgusting pig face.
>>565781I'm absolutely blown away. I'm not a great artist. Really far from it. And I just applied the Ratio. And, i just quickly edited my own model, and I would move a bit and this, and think " this isn't going to work", and it... just made it look. Better. Like visible results in my own eyes.
>>566161Give me some other angles because so far, I'm liking the one on the left.
>>555765This is great feedback. Thanks anon
>>555751I'll be the first to say it looks like a nigger
>>567914Im gonna go with my gut and assume that was intentional. Character is probably a drug dealer or a thief.
>>566264You're high if you think the one on the left looks better.
>>567863none of those are cute
>>568373Show us cuteness then, anon.
They aren't cute
>>552721>>552787>bat/micheal jackson nose>tumblr color on noseWhat the fuck are you doing?
>>568053I think the one on the left looks like an older version of the one on the right....Are you a pedo, anon?
>>552605Rip-off the Japs, then copyright it as your own.Americans have become masters in this art for half a century.
>>568379Lewd and cute are two different aspects of appeal. Your shit is creepy, btw. Lurk moar, faggot.
>>567863Disney does not use this principle for their princesses.their bodies are slim and slender and quite long. the only thing you can pull from this are the eyes. See how they take up nearly a quarter of the facial space and are pushed down low? That's what ppl associate with youth and beauty.
>>568373They were... 60 years ago
>>559368Ehh... NOTHING related to janet Jackson... a godamn beauty compared to a.... Well...designed....3D....work....Nah I'm trolling is quite good but I'm feel uncomfortable when I see the face, she looks like a deformed Mickael Jackson, its strange but the main face shape looks good, but remove the "eyeliner" and make her eyebrows looking like... eyebrows. En smaller mouth and a quite finer face/jaws shape. But Godamnit get off this horrible pubes hairs ! If you want to make realistic african hairs make yours a LOT smaller, and please change that face skin color I'm farting so hard
>>568379moar please, its for a friend
Did Overwatch manage to do it?Also, why do their in-game models look considerably less cute? Is it the shading that actually makes characters look cute?
>>568749Yes to both questions.
>>568749Their in game models are way less expressive, especially in game play.
>>565688Disney demands that characters "stay cute" and stay "very on model"Most 3D studios do not like squash and stretch and smears in 3D, because well, A: They are fucking hard to do in 3D with looking weird and B: Because money and timeThis is why Hotel Transylvania give rigging artists and animators a stiffy. But even there you can see that Mavis, the cute girl character, really is not allowed to do nearly as much off model, exaggerations and smears, because she has to stay "cute".Cute, young, girls sell. Male characters are allowed to be funny. But you need your cute girls cute, so all the pedos and weebs buy tickets and post about how they want to fuck a rabbit or an underage undead girl on the internet.
>>568749Their in-game model have far fewer polygons than the models used in their cinimatics. In-game models have to render quickly so shortcuts have to be taken.
>>569383The rabbit one I'll give you, But Mavis was like, 118, wasn't she? That's hardly underaged. She's old enough to be your grandmother's grandmother.
>>569383>Cute, young, girls sell. Male characters are allowed to be funny. But you need your cute girls cute, so all the pedos and weebs buy tickets and post about how they want to fuck a rabbit or an underage undead girl on the internet.if this were true Disney would have casted a cute, young girl for their #1 franchise which is Star Wars. Heres a hint...the girl is borderline hideous.Your post is discarded.
>>569493>daisy ridley hideousyour post is discarded
>>563365genetic appropriation of the white nosebut they remove the bridge - well not really remove - the eyes just blow the bridge out

Here's an example of the topology used for the Tinkerbell characters.
>>571462where'd you get these?
>>571463Disneytoon laid off a LOT of people after Planes 2 underperformed.
>>571465I'm sorry to hear that.Do you have link to more files?
I think the primary reason people don't like Daisy Ridley is because she plays a coal burner in Star wars.
>>572758No, she's also a pretty terrible actress. She only has one expression, and it's almost scared, but mostly just kind of wide-eyed and worried.
>>571463Yeah I'm interested ...
If it could help, I assisted to a sort of master class with Glen Keane when he was working on "Duet".It was very instructive, but all in all, they keep using the good old principles of Walt Disney. As a side note tho, they heavily modify their modelling software. For example, they have a module to modify the model according to a frame. Let me explain.Imagine that you have made a cute bouncy bunny. At the key frame, you will need to wisely choose the position and distortion of the said character. So, to better catch the bouncy and "living" side of the thing, they can distort the model pretty much like painting, at every frame they want / need. And it's not free form deformer or so, you sketch your form over the paused frame, and the computer will try to modify the geometry and animation in accordance with your sketch.Granted, animation is more life alike and fluid.
>>573020she's so bad that she's breaking your immersion from star wars? jeez man...
>>569449I was surprised overwatch was only 10gbjesus christ TF2 was that size 5 years ago before the bloat happened
>>573020don't forget her trademark loud breathing
>>556937I'm no nigger fetishist, but I think your model might look better if you make the skin darker, and also add some subsurface scattering to the shader.

>>556132"nasolabial folds"? do you mean the philtrum?yeah. neoteny is sexy.
