There's a distinct lack of demand for 3D artists where I live.

What are some other ways to make money off of 3D modelling?

Probably not all that different from Instagram networking. Set up your profile, like a Tumblr, and comment (reblog with a comment) on other people's work and eventually someone will check you out. Also tagging, but unfortunately the default search on Tumblr is this search enginey method that looks for words in posts and not just tags and NSFW blogs don't show up in that search, they only show up in /tagged/soandso searches. And you have to set your blog as NSFW if it's NSFW, or else you get deleted. Could also use an Instagram of tamer renders and put up links to each profile, lots of info on how to get popular on Instagram.

Then you can put your commission info / Patreon / whatever on there.

I make money off wallpaper commissions.

Some of the good ones I sell on Redbubble as prints and shirts as well.

It's not a ton of cash or even a livable wage, but it's a good way to get the odd steam game here and there. It's mostly passive once you get people buying on Redbubble.

If you want to make good money, keep an eye on current trends and pretty much pander to whoever will pay you.
Or don't, and make what you like. Chances are someone might like what you make enough to commission something.

You could also try becoming a Houdini expert. Good Houdini artists are generally in a higher demand and make more money.

There are fucking Patreons for people who make SFM porn, the easiest shit possible using all community nude models (so no modelling skill needed, but animating) that are making several grand a month.

Do that shit all original and the skies the limit. There are some artists that make their own assets and animate in far better software making like $8000 a month.
