So I've used Lightwave on and off since high school. It's the program I'm most comfortable in terms of its feature set but its little quirks are really starting to get to me.

The symmetry always seems to fuck up and combining different parts of the model is always a royal pain. I particularly love the smooth shift tool and its ease of use.

Of all the 3D modeling suites out there, what's the most similar to it in terms of feature set, UI, and ease of use?

3DS MAX isn't an option for me since I use Mac.

You dun goofed. On a more serious note, Softimage was the most common alternative to Lightwave. Houdini is supposedly a good third option but I haven't personally touched it

Probably this, since it was made by ex-lightwave dudes. I'm not sure why LW is still around desu. We use it at work and I feel like we are becoming less competitive by having lighwave as the core of our pipeline. Anytime I look up a problem all the discussions are from years ago. There's a lot of neat plugins, but many haven't been updated in years. It feels dead. Also it's slow as shit with complex scenes and the architecture feels old.

Is Modo as capable as other DCCs like Lightwave, Maya, Max, C4D, and Softimage?

THIS.

I've used Lightwave since it only ran on a Toaster. It's come a long way, but still. A co-worker said he used Blender, and I thought that was cute. Then I tried it. Also, there's a fuckton of tuts out there for it. So I got a little better at Blender and I like it a lot, but I've ended up just sculpting with it and then importing the models back into Lightwave to pretty up. Blender's render engine is weird and maybe not the fastest. Check out sculpting and retopo in Blender. And it's free. You might not see HQ work out there, but studios etc have deep pockets etc. Also, do you really see yourself joining Pixar? Really? Does anyone?
