what does /3/ think of rwby's success
>>521586famous japanese artists drew mounty's deviantart OCs on some fanbook
>>521572Isn't the guy who created this dead?
Is it worth watching or is it just weebtrash?
Never heard of it>success
>>521598weebtrashIts amazing that people older than 14 like this shit
>>521600A lot of people older than 14 like it ironically.Yeah I don't get it either
>>521600But what is so weebtrash about it?
>>521572The fact that it makes a single dollar baffles me. I can't believe people talk shit about the JoJo CG intros because this show is a much better target. It isn't particularly hard to make CG look anime-like, but somehow the people working on this show think it's okay to have sub-par animations, model errors (like shit clipping through the model) and little to no lighting. I mean, they could've slapped on the most basic cel-shader and that would've made it look much better. It's so sub-par that 2D animes made in Korean sweatshops have more detail. At least there's some sort of shading going on.I'd say the character personalities and designs are shit but that seems to be a staple of anime.
>>521649When it first started the cg and animation both were lower than shit-tier, but the newest episode are ok I guess
>>521611the character design. The animation. the script. the facial expressions. There is nothing about it that isn't weeb trash.
>>521649I haven't seen it, but from the webms I've seen, the animation is so terrible its disgusting. How can an american make such a shitty animation baffles me.
>>521741Well he wasn't exactly known for making good animation. All he was good at was fight animation and that's it. Make him do a walk animation and he fell apartThen again not a lot of walking from him nowadays anyway
The animation is really bad, but it's RT so a lot of people like it on principle.Overall good for them, they made something their fans like, and even if from a critical standpoint its trash, what does that matter really? I'm sure they made a lot more money by doing el cheapo untrained modeling and animation than they would have made by hiring a professional studio to do it for them.
>>522722>and even if from a critical standpoint its trash, what does that matter really? This is a very valid point. I consider RWBY the most vile weeb trash there is. But there are plenty of genuine weebs on this planetand if you entertain them you have a audience whom's lives are actually enriched by what you did.The creators of RWBY are obv giant weebs themselves, so for them it's a win-win profiting from something they love.So how is the rest of us to feel about the success of such work? I say by recognizing that there are plenty of niche markets that are availible if just go outyour comfort zone and make content based on demand instead of your own taste and quality ideals. In short, if all else fails we can all profit doing the flavor of pony rape porn of the month on patheron. If we are willing to sell our dignity we'll never go hungry as long as there is internet.
>>522745>I consider RWBY the most vile weeb trash there isYou act like moeshit about middle schoolers aren't a real thing. And after watching 13 episodes of RWBY I can safely say that there are much, MUCH worse weebshit things out there.
>>522748>after watching 13 episodes of RWBYI do not know how deep that rabbit hole goes. It's like how '2 girls 1 cup' is your gold standard of fucked up, but then someone shows you crush porn from the darknet and you realise that it's really kinda innocent. But I do not go out of my way looking for these things, so RWBY is the worst weeb I've subjected my senses to.
>>522751My standard for weebshit may be a bit unfair since to me almost all japshit is weebshit. but since RWBY is an American show based off of jap anime then yeah it is pretty weebshit. But at the very least it isn't American made moeshit. Personally I think RWBY is kind of alright. Also I've never seen crush porn. What's it like?
>>522757> What's it like? It's this super sadistic type stuff where women will stomp cute creatures like like living kittens into pieces and perform sexual acts with their severed remains.
>>522758Ah so I have seen it before then.
The 3D in RWBY seems extremely gimmicky, like "Hey guys look we're too fucking lazy to do 2D!". While other series have proved it's a pretty viable take on a media with otherwise "traditional" animation.Off topic but I also found the voice acting to be fucking horrendous. In an industry like "western anime fans" where you'd expect everyone to be such a massive faggot about voicing (muh subs) you'd have figured they would at least train their VAs to be competent.
>>523061do you have the /3/ desert pissing comic ? I love that one.
>>523063I feel that /3/ has gotten a lot more traffic. We're on our way to being the fasted board on 4chan.Slow and steady wins the race.
>>523078>Slow and steady wins the race.eventually /3/ will be the only board left on 4chan
>>523078post teh comic fuccboi >:O
>>521600It's main target is /u/ and tumblr
What renderer did they use?
>>522751mfw I just googled '2 girls 1 cup'. ffs so many vile pieces of shit out.I don't even want to think about what crush porn is.and DON'T respond to this post.
>>523424You have been on the internet how long and JUST seen it? You should watch 1 man 1 jar.
Gonna post some RWBY animation gifs, try not to vomit.RWBY fucking sucks.
>>521753>All he was good at was fight animation and that's it. Make him do a walk animation and he fell apartHow is that even possible? Isn't learning a good walk/run animation pretty much obligatory?
At least the porn is pretty good.
>>523740I think Monty Oum was self taught. All he cared about was Hyper Action, stupid weapons like gunblades and ripping of FF8.Some how he got to a chance to make a self insert deviantart OC series. I'll give him props for that I guess.I could probably tolerate RWBY a bit more if was 2d animation instead, that way they could patch up the flaws in the animation.
>>523743>I think Monty Oum was self taught. But that still doesn't make sense. I'd assume he real some books which still teach you a walk cycle. Also a fight scene is more complicated than a walk or run cycle. It just doesn't make ANY fucking sense.
>>523744I'm a self taught 3Dmodeller (which is putting it generously) and I do low poly models for papercraft. As a result I'm not very good at the basics of 3Dmodelling, I couldnt even make a halfway decent human model and I'm currently struggling to do decent texture mapping on one of my files.Point is it isnt so strange. You get better at what you do. I do low poly and not much else, Monty did Hyper Action animation and not much else.
>>523745I get what you mean but I mean it's just the walking. It is so simple. That's the only thing that gets me.
>>523746Yeah I get you. I think for the show its just "why walk when you can jump flip kick"Walking was never a priority for them I suppose.
>>523737>>523738>>523739Holy shit that's bad. Is this quality through the whole series or just some cherrypicking?
>>523748There is a lot more shit in RWBY. Clipping issues and such. One time an enemy swings a mace at a character and the mace seems to phase through the character. (pic related)
>>523083gets me every time
>>523737Who looks at this scene and says "yeah, that'll work"? it's not like RT is some tiny company who can't afford to hire as many people as needed.
>>523744>Also a fight scene is more complicated than a walk or run cycleThe type of fight scenes we're talking about here centers on showing all the action at flicker type speeds and go to a freeze pose with 'le over-acted anime dramatique' type stance. Fight scenes like that are not very hard to pull off. Dynamic ones conducted at a more human pace are extremely difficult tho, like animating good dancing, mongst the most challenging things you can set out to do as an animator.Especially if bodies interact and grapple one another.
>>521572I like the show, but I like most Rooster Teeth stuff. I liked Monty's stuff and I am sad he died. I would love to make something like that but probably not the route Monty first went.
>>523057The VA's were people around the office currently not doing anything.
>>523748The first season had the worst problems and every season afterwards has gotten significantly better as the animation department gets better. Now we even have this https://youtu.be/WD-Yf-tbXOs
So, RWBY has proven people can make their own weeb stuff and gain a following...how long before we have the next successful thing like this? Have any of you contemplated making a series on your own? I was thinking about trying it. Maybe just a few shorts to see where it went.
>>523744Yeah it does...his fight scenes are essentially pose to pose with no nuance, and thrown at you so fast that you're registering the pose and that's about it. Pretty smart actually as a production method for such a limited production.
>>523824Absolute cancer. Who are the man children they make this shit for? At least the animation and visuals got better, but whoever writes this trash needs to be fired.
>>523952I was thinking of a low poly comic, which should be fairly easy for a single person with a shit computer.
>>521598I'm an old school Monty fan and it's awful. The story is Naruto meets Hogwarts and the dialogue/acting is worse. Fight scenes are the usual Monty fare.
>>521611It's literally just anime cliches. Tries to be Naruto but somehow ends up being worse.
>>523954>>523965>>523967>>523968Absolutely agree...I mean I respect the guy for what he has accomplished, but I hate almost everything about the actual show...I think that's what inspired me about it, I was like shit man, I could do so much better than this if I really wanted to...but then what happens if nobody likes it? I think I'm going to anyway because it's kindof been a dream of mine, and RWBY just proves I have nothing to fear.
>>523745Nope. Monty not able to make a decent walk cycle is like if I could model a high poly humanoid (that looks good) but couldn't do decent low poly.
>>524048You probably don't animate yourself. 'hyper action' animation with characters flying around changing poses is not more difficult than walk cycles, it is much simpler. Reason is such fight scenes depict motion that is impossible. People accelerate and spins in ways that is not only super human, but consist of motion not driven by the muscles. Therefore they do not have to deal with conveying any weight or physics.Walking/running in comparison is actually very hard to animate convincingly since it's something everybody knows what it's supposed to look like.In general the way loads are transferred throughout the skeletomuscular system in natural motion is a complex interconnected mess that takes a lot of experience and careful attention to replicate well.
>>524038Monty actually had a motto of "something is always better than nothing" that it was better to make something and have it suck then sit around not doing anything becuse you worry it will suck.
>>524297Monty also worked stupidly fast and scarified quality for speed and quantity.
>>524297This mentality is highly problematic. It is the main reason why the world is buzzing with crackpots shamelessly spewing ill-conceived bullshit at the very pace their lips can move or fingers can type.People like this think being opinionated and vocal about things is good regardless of their comprehension of what they're dealing with.Something is not better than nothing when the noise to signal ratio is so high that it just muddles up things and become part of the background noise.Anyone looking for something worthwhile must wade trough a river of crap neck high with a lantern just to find the cherries in the crap cake thanks to people like this.Shutting up and working on your delivery until you have something substantial to contribute is golden. For silence is golden and less is more.
>>524336Well, that is an "interesting" opinion, but that doesn't really have anything to do with making stuff. Talk radio and punditry sure. The point is that its better to try and fail then never try at all. If all you do is sit around and talk about how you need to get better then even rendering a house will be beyond you.
>>523410>What renderer did they use?Poser Pro does render farming, and they were likely using Firefly with heavy cel shader settings.By the time Superfly (i.e. Cycles) came out, Monty was already dead.
>>523820Monty held the reins VERY tightly and shortly after he died RT took over production and pipelines and got rid of Monty's #2. It's why the animation improved.
>>523968>Tries to be Soul Eater but somehow ends up being worseftfy>>524048>Monty not able to make a decent walk cycleAnd the walk cycle designer's baked into the program. He just didn't use it (or he customized the rigs enough that they wouldn't work in it). Here's Monty in 2010:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6nf0tNZvmqo>>524297>"something is always better than nothing"He wasn't wrong in the regard of "the best is the enemy of the good" because the best will never happen. All of this is moot because it's almost guaranteed that within 36 months RWBY will be animated in Maya if it isn't already by now. It's not that it couldn't continue to be animated in Poser, it's that RT doesn't want to invest more time in training staff to use it, and the learning curve of using Poser with a versioning system like Perforce (RT's preferred VCS). The characters' faces are relatively complex custom rigs for an animation package that by default doesn't do MMD-style 2D facial animations (e.g. mouths that move independent of the head's overall mesh); that was Monty's work.Do the rest of us who use Poser find his animation mistakes embarrassing? Absolutely. But he pushed his knowledge of a $500 application to the limit to produce these shorts. Try to respect that much. Also, the poor fucker didn't deserve to get killed by a routine allergy shot and have everything he worked for be whored by RT.
The series is better than anyone on /3/ could or be willing to muster. I wish there were more shows like it. In fact, It's pretty much pioneering the cg realm on youtube. Can't wait for the next season.
>>524498Monty's number two quit because he couldn't keep up.
>>524501>In fact, It's pretty much pioneering the cg realm on youtube.>Not all of those Minecraft animations
>>524501Nice try m80.
>>524501If you aren't just trying to get a rise out of people then I'd have to assume you were between 10-14 years of age.
>>524336that's more of a kill yourself attitude.
This thread made me watch all the episodes. It's... alright. Could be better but could be way worse.
>>523057RWBY caters to the sort of animu fan who only really watches Cartoon Network's lineup with a random scattering of whatever's popular on Tumblr or Gaia or Livejournal or some shit. Bad VA is what they expect.
>>525029You mean the poeple who watch crap like SAO, and Ass Wars
>>523744>>523746>>523747Monty was a dancer before he was an animator. He had a different priority on conveying motion, and focused only what's on interesting. If your walk cycle is dumb, then it's dumb, but it's just a transition shot. If your fight scene is dumb/boring, your art has failed. >>523748They were live-training new animators on the show, basically giving them the equivalent of inbetween-artist work to get them up to speed. There's a lot of unimportant shots where the quality suddenly tanks for 10 seconds to a couple minutes.>>524550He was iced out of the company for trying to buck the kikes at RT who wanted to throw out Monty's vision of the series in favor of quick-cashgrab garbage. They cut out and changed huge portions of the show's plot, fucked up characterizations, refused to consult the only other person who knew what was intended (his widow), etc. RT without Monty or Shane got us RWBY Chibi. Shane wrote an extensive open letter about what happened. http://roosterteeth.com/post/51265744Nothing surprising, really, when you remember that RT is a talentless hack firm based on using the popularity of Babby's First FPS to pump out effortless Machinima. They needed another golden goose after Halo's popularity started to wane, and lo and behold, RWBY outperforms RvB almost immediately. Shane clung to the idealism: he had been personally trained by Monty. But that's not the fastest way to wring shekels, so he had to go.
It's success, it's a pioneer series, you don't see many of these sort of shows on youtube. And it's RT.Other than that there's no good side to it. It's awful. The animation is awful, the story is cliche, the characters are cliche... The only reason i've seen a couple of episodes is because it's 3D animation, and i haven't seen anything innovative in it. They also said that the "fights" are the selling point, and all i've seen is over the top weapon spinning.
>>521649What's wrong with JoJo intros? I thought those were awesome.
>>525063What gets me is that they left it on such a horrible cliff hangar just to do Chibi.
>>523738I guess animation quality died with monty.
>>521572is this made in poser? :D BTW I love anime and shit, IDK how much of a weeb I am though but this shit is shit D: >>523424also either you ar a massive troll faggot, or IDK how the fuck did you even ended up on 4chan
>>523748 no no its that D:I just googled this series and seen like 5 minutes or so D: I farted from cringing
>>525111Your joking right, your not actually an idiot like >>525063 is right?
>>525209>:D>D:>weeb>ended up on 4chanYou're fucking kidding me with this, right?
>>525063Welp, Shane's done enough crying, when is he gonna step up with his own series?
>>521649>there are people that trashtalk JoJo CG openings
>>525771>hol's finger clips through gun within the first 5 seconds of the clip.Is your post ironic or not?
>>521600I just watch it for the waifus.
>>525843You can have a good sense of style, timing and choreography with out attention to detail of the mechanics of the animation.I think the same can be appalled to rwby; over all shitty animation in this case, but a few of the fight scenes had really stand out choreography.
>>521599>American web animation animated in a program from the 90s that went on to outsell One Punch Man in JapanYou didn't need to have heard about to understand that it's more popular than the most entry level anime of last year.
I do like Yang's shotgun gauntlets.10/10 would teleport behind you with.
>>521572People who grew up on bad shounen and never expanded their tastes think stuff like this is THE SHIT. They don't know any better...
I want to stick my dick in the white oneIt's pretty autistic but has/had nice fight scenes. Since Monty's dead I guess I'll see if the fight scenes keep holding up. If not there's no real reason to watch it.
