I've been having an issue while using Meshmixer as well as netfabb, I really need to get just the outside of a part to 3D print it, otherwise the cost would be a kick in the balls.
In other words, the shell is what matters here the most. Anybody who wants to help out a desperate soul?

What exactly are you trying to print? Is it a massing model for a building, or is it something else?

Why not just take the mesh and try to delete the insides, then seal the holes? If it's not a complex form (such as in the case of the building), I would just remodel it from scratch using CAD software.
