Because of the early valve models that were ready to go. People also imported the Gmod nude models and they could be easily animated.

Also, easy as fuck to learn, good interface, a bunch of premade valve assets that could be used for scene building and basically whatever they liked.

SFM is from Valve. Valve is coming out with the Vive. I would expect SFM Vive support to be announced on the 29th when they launch the preorders.

Still, it'll pay off down the line to use Unreal. Much more flexibility.

Of course it has many limitations. It's meant to render animations for source games from 2009. People use it because it's easy to jump in and make decent animations. Also already has IK rigs for thousands of game models.

Someone would have to already be advanced to make decent animations in blender/maya + setup their own ik, which isn't hard, just takes more time.

I'd personally switch to blender if I were being paid/commissioned to make animations.

Once SFM gets PBR workflows it will become a much better Animation and Render toolkit. Stated this when the thread started we will be switching all our renders to SFM because of the fast production level it can export. Renders take less time as well as the animation process is much friendlier. It's just that our entire material and asset workflow use PBR and we'd have to be very experienced in it to get anything close to the graphical fidelity at which we achieve in Maya. PBR will make it revolutionary.

We also license several plugins and SFM will be a good alternative. Maya and such will forever be King of rendering, but for what we are doing we don't need it if SFM gets PBR. I installed this today and tried to follow the Valve tutorial.
Problem is it runs at 5 fps.
Now, I don't have a top tier pc but specs are giid, and even though it's a laptop it shouldn't have this problem.

Key Specs:
2.4 GHz quad core CPU
Nvidia 755m GPU
12GB RAM

I've already tried disabling lightning and ambient occlusion and I only got 2 fps out of it.

Also real talk, you wanna know why SFM is used the most? because It's easy. Every lazy hack can pick it up, take a model someone ported over to it, open a patreon, and make thousands monthly animating a pastel coloured pony fucking Samus' ass raw.

S2FM is out and these fucks are so lazy at what they do, they don't move over to a better updated engine that supports .FBX files, they'd rather wait around for someone to convert to .smd or .dmx because these guys are too stupid to actually learn how to bring these models in themselves. Why else do you see D.Va (and other overwatch characters) get fucked with her jumpsuit still on? Because these fucks don't know how to even do a simple retexture. most of them are talentless hacks, and they make more money than most of us here.
