shitty advice, sometimes tris and poles can work for subdivision, but you have to to apply that on a per-case base, it's not certain they won't stick out.

Never seen anyone say that. Usual workflow is dyntopo/multires sculpt- retopo - sculpt again - retopo - etc until your model is good enough.

Unless you're talking about furniture or mechanical things (I know you can do hard stuff in sculpting as well)
